Outdoors and Nature Study

On Fridays we read from our Handbook of Nature Study.

Last year we read the whole section on birds. It was wonderful!

Lately, I have been letting the kids pick from the contents, (anything), on what they would like to learn about.

Last Friday K1 picked Ant Lion from page 354.

Today he is still exploring them.

And I am learning about something that I never knew existed!

I am trying so much to like this book but we sort of have a love/hate relationship going on. It is too bulky, too black and white, and too much for me to really get into. But........it has loads of great info and activities. I just can't seem to wade through enough to make it a regular habit. It is sitting on my shelf again from the library and I made it through a few sections trying to come up with a workable plan.

So I admire you for coming up with a workable solution. Thanks for sharing how you use it.

Aug. 14, 2007 - Oh, I used to love those!

We don't see them here, but back home in AZ they were all over the yard. We would get them to try to catch a stick, and then scoop up the dirt to try to find them under the sand....wow, memories.

I love that book too, I have a really old copy of it that I got for a dollar, and a new one that I got for 5$ at a book sale. Woo hoo!
Blessings,
Nancy

I love the science cabinet! Very cool. We spent two days one year fascinated with apparently migrating lady bugs. They came on my eldest son's birthday, and we scooped them up with Tonka trucks, put them in jars, tried to count them, and just took oodles of pictures. So much fun. That was years ago, and they remember it still!
