Nature Study is one component of a Charlotte Mason education.
It consists of doing a walk or exploring any type of nature,
and it consists of documenting; such as a nature journal or notebook.
It can be as simple or as complex as you like.
It can be 'spur of the moment, whatever you find' or
Planned ahead and scheduled.
It can be far from home, a field trip, close to home, or your backyard.
The main thing is that it is enjoyed and that the children learn to observe and become curious of their surroundings.
One way to get started is here:
Barb at The Heart of Harmony posts a weekly Green Hour Challenge.
Here in Florida it is easy to be outdoors a great deal of the time.
Not only do I spend quite a bit of time outside with the kids, but they also spend several hours outdoors without me, while I work or spend some time on the computer.
If you aren't so fortunate with good weather, you can still challenge yourself with these simple and fun assignments.
Green Hour Challenge # 11 Seasonal Tree Study
Our Magnolia tree...doesn't look like much now,
but just wait until it starts to blossom!
I have more green hour challenges posted over at SunnyShootsNature |

We are three doing the Green Hour Challenges out of order, as we don't even have leaves on our oaks yet. But we do have cherry blossoms. Oh wow, are they stunning this year!
When the tree in our back yard does start leafing out, we are planning on making a "leaf baby book" by taking a leaf rubbing every three days for two weeks to watch the leaves grow. Right now we are just enjoying our pea seedlings. ;)
Blessings,
Val
