Painted Ladies

Posted in Around the Home

My daughter received this for Christmas.
We sent for the larvae from the enclosed certificates.
They say to keep them out of the sun in a temperature that is 72 to 78 degrees.
We kept ours on the patio. A silky webbing started to develop.

The caterpillars will climb to the top of the cups and hang down “head first.”
This is when they become chrysalides.
You can then remove the disks that they are attached to
and pin it to the observation habitat.
After 7 to 10 days, the butterflies will begin to emerge as adults.
The darker the chrysalid, the closer it is to emergence.
As a butterfly emerges, it will rest in a vertical position while pumping its wings to full size.
A red liquid which looks like blood comes from the tail end of the butterfly.
This is called meconium. It is left-over color and unneeded tissues from the wings.
They can be fed with a sugar water mixture put onto flowers.
We have nine Painted Ladies.
Since these butterflies have been raised in captivity,
I plan to keep them on our screened patio for us to enjoy.

Mr. Dan

Posted in Around the Home
Photobucket

The ban has been lifted,

As of Christmas Day!

Ever since we met this furry friend in the wild...

a certain little girl, was just dreamin' of owning a cute, little bunny.

My daughter fell in love with this bunny from PetSupermarket.

At the petshop, this bunny was docile as could be.

They told me this bunny was pottytrained and required minimum care.

This would be THE pet for us.

I decided on the big plastic cage on the patio,

instead of the homemade wood cage in the yard, as I had previously thought.

Of course I needed a cozy igloo, bowl, 'potty', toys, hay, food, litter, bedding, and water bottle.

$148.00 later...the bunny is ours!

Actually WE are 'Mr. Dan's!

He is quite a character!

He does not use his potty OR 'go' in one corner...NOPE!

He turns over his potty. He turns over his cozy igloo and sits on top of it. He chews on his cage's bars. He does NOT sleep. When we let him loose on the patio, he runs WILD in circles and does not let us catch him!

Oh...but looks ARE deceiving!

Teaching the Trivium

How can you give your children the tools they need to teach themselves? Long ago students were first taught how to learn. Today, students are taught an encyclopedia of subjects – trivia – but they are not taught the basic skills of learning: to discover, to reason, and to apply.

Classical Christian Education

America's public schools are failing. Douglas Wilson lays much of the blame for this situation on the current idea that schools can educate in a moral vacuum. __________________________
