The Three P's

Posted in Around the Home

Pencil grip,

Paper position,  and

Posture.

This is all new to my Kindergartener!

I was able to pick up this little table at a garage sale, to help us out!

(p.s. It's a Pottery Barn set that I scored for $10.00!

I just applied some Minwax Polyshades to it!)

Shop Around the Corner.
I like anything with Jimmy Stewart!
You've Got Mail was a remake based on this original move.
The Ghost and Mrs. Muir.
We all agree that this could have been a better movie.
The last 20 minutes has time passing very quickly with nothing much happening,
and without the Ghost of Capt. Daniel Gregg until the very ending!

Twins?

Posted in Books
Only two years apart! (ha!ha!)
Meet Miss who has read most everywhere,
from Beach Shore to Library Square.
But Mister who has only read...
after dark and in his bed.
One reads fiction and the other non fiction.
(I'm a non fiction reader myself.)
But, I would like Mister to read more books with stories from cover to cover.
Miss is here to help!
She picked up my book by the Bluedorns...
and picked out...
A Series of Unfortunate Events #1 The Bad Beginning
They laugh alike, they walk alike, at times they even talk alike.
and NOW they even read alike!
Thanks Miss!

Poetry

WHO?
This month our poet is William Wordsworth
WHAT?
We read his biography and his poems from the Poetry for Young People series.
WHERE?
At the table together.
WHEN?
It gets squeezed in, right at break time.
WHY?
First for enjoyment.
For appreciation of the language and vocabulary.
For an insight of what the poet is saying to us.
To provoke thought.

HOW?
Simply read!
I don't use poetry to study and analyze.
I present it to the kids and
I'll ask them what they thought of it.
Sometimes I get a quick answer and other times a short discussion.
Do we memorize?
A bit.
Usually one poem for the month.
Just enough to make it enjoyable!

Family Movie

Posted in Family Movies
Fun to watch!
 Based on the 1963 movie.
Flipper - The Original Series: Season One
Here's a pretty indepth reveiw.
I like what they say here:
A widower (a handy plot device, because a
1964 TV mother would never allow the boys to do some of the things they do here.)
yep...these boys have a pretty cool life!

Sea Hawk with Errol Flynn!
I loved the 'escape from the galley' scene.
Also some great sword fighting to be seen!

Bible

We've made a change with our Bible time.
I ordered
The Golden Children’s Bible and Christian Studies Bible Course
from Memoria Press.
This Bible is beautifully written with King James text and has lovely pictures.
Here's how we use it:
One Lesson a week.
Mon.   Read aloud from the Bible
Tue.   Read aloud from the Bible and read Facts to Know
Wed.   Read Memory Verse and answer questions together
Thur.   Answer aloud and write Comprehensive Questions
Fri.   Vocabulary, Memory Verse, Map.
We do all of this together and aloud.  I want our Bible time to be an enjoyable time...
And it is!

Teaching the Trivium

How can you give your children the tools they need to teach themselves? Long ago students were first taught how to learn. Today, students are taught an encyclopedia of subjects – trivia – but they are not taught the basic skills of learning: to discover, to reason, and to apply.
