Nature Study

Nature Study is one component of a Charlotte Mason education.

It consists of doing a walk or exploring any type of nature,

and it consists of documenting; such as a nature journal or notebook.

It can be as simple or as complex as you like.

It can be 'spur of the moment,  whatever you find' or

Planned ahead and scheduled.

It can be far from home, a field trip, close to home, or your backyard.

The main thing is that it is enjoyed and that the children learn to observe and become curious of their surroundings.

One way to get started is here:

Barb at The Heart of Harmony posts a weekly Green Hour Challenge.

Here in Florida it is easy to be outdoors a great deal of the time.

Not only do I spend quite a bit of time outside with the kids, but they also spend several hours outdoors without me, while I work or spend some time on the computer.

If you aren't so fortunate with good weather, you can still challenge yourself with these simple and fun assignments.

Green Hour Challenge # 11  Seasonal Tree Study

Our Magnolia tree...doesn't look like much now,

but just wait until it starts to blossom!

Butterflies

When we catch butterflies and moths,
we let them fly around on our screened in patio.
We let them go after a while of observing
and playing.

Teaching the Trivium

How can you give your children the tools they need to teach themselves? Long ago students were first taught how to learn. Today, students are taught an encyclopedia of subjects – trivia – but they are not taught the basic skills of learning: to discover, to reason, and to apply.
