The interview will air on Saturday, Sept. 26, just a few minutes after 11 a.m.
Those outside Canterbury can listen in via live streaming. Just go to http://plainsfm.org.nz/ and click on the red-letter link “Listen” on the upper right hand corner of the page.
Hopefully, the interview will be uploaded to the podcast section of the website in the next couple of weeks.
This morning sometime after 8:30am (Wednesday 19th) there will be a programme on Home Schooling on Radio Rhema. The main topic to be covered is some recent research from out of the USA. It is planned for Craig Smith to be interviewed during this programme as well.
Craig has just been rung. It is planned for 8:40am
Who would want to be a small child in the 21st century? Virtually from the moment of birth you'd be given the message that other people's needs take priority over yours.
Within hours of being born, you're bundled out of hospital because the health system considers there are more important things to do with the health dollar than allow new mothers time to bond with their babies. Mother struggling with breast-feeding? No support at home? Tough. Out you go.
Before you're a few months old you're likely to find yourself being left at a creche each morning so that Mum can go to work, because a relentlessly acquisitive, consumerist society has convinced a generation of parents that owning a flash house, driving a late-model car and pursuing a career are more important than raising their children.
At weekends, you're liable to find yourself being dressed in cute designer-label clothes and dragged off to a trendy cafe, where you're expected to behave yourself patiently while your parents slurp latte and read the Sunday paper.
And on the rare occasions when you're taken for a walk in a pushchair – or baby-buggy, to use the cutesy-wutesy name now preferred – you're propelled toward a procession of bewildering, and possibly frightening, strangers.
The recent report of a Dundee University study that showed forward-facing pushchairs might impair children's development shouldn't have come as a surprise to anyone.
When a small child is facing its parent there is constant interaction between the two. The Dundee study found, predictably, that this stimulated brain development.
Conversely, the study concluded that babies facing away from the pusher could be "emotionally impoverished" and even suffer stress. The language is a bit melodramatic but the message is simple enough.
There are obvious practical reasons, too, why the rear-facing pushchair is preferable. It means that whoever's pushing can see instantly if anything is wrong, such as the child choking or being dazzled by the sun, or a wasp landing on its face.
But the vagaries of fashion dictate that the forward-facing buggy is the way to go. Forward-facing pushchairs are now so prevalent that it's hard to find an old- fashioned one in which the child faces the pusher.
I suspect the appeal of the forward-facing pushchair has more to do with the gratification of parents than with the comfort and wellbeing of the child.
Couples are delaying having children because their careers take priority. When they finally get around to it, they often behave as if this most basic biological feat is something no one has ever accomplished before.
The child then becomes an advertisement for the parents, a fashion accessory to be shown off for maximum advantage. This is accomplished far more effectively when the unfortunate infant is facing forward.
This Wednesday, 11 school children from the Wairarapa Home Schooling Association will ask questions of an astronaut on the International Space Station via Amateur Radio, in what will be New Zealand’s second organised contact, though it is number 387 for the ISS. It also appears to be the 1st time a group of home-schoolers have contacted the ISS. Typically, the time allowed for questions is about 10 minutes, and in this time, up to 15 questions can be asked and replies given. The questions are of general interest.
The astronaut the children will be speaking to is American Radio Amateur Mike Finke (KE5AET), this is Mike’s 2nd expedition on the ISS. Mike is a very keen amateur radio operator and has operated from space before. He is one of 9 astronauts on the space station at present. The International Space station orbits the earth every 90 minutes at an altitude of 370 km at a speed of 27,000 km/hour. The Space Shuttle Endeavour docked with the ISS on Monday 17th November, and is scheduled to stay docked to the ISS for 14 days before returning to earth.
Many volunteer Radio Amateurs around the world have worked for over 12 months to make this Radio contact a success, including those in America who have the responsibility for the scheduling and timing. Other countries involved are Australia and Japan. We must recognise that Amateur Radio on the ISS is secondary to everything else, and there may be something outside of our control that may prevent this contact from taking place; it would be unusual at this late stage, but it could happen.
ARISS (Amateur Radio on the International Space Station) is a purely volunteer organisation involving people in many countries around the world. It is supported by the American Radio Relay League (ARRL), NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration), the Amateur Satellite Corporation (AMSAT), Japan Amateur Radio League (JARL), and many other national Amateur Radio organisations, including the Wireless Institute of Australia (WIA) and the New Zealand Association of Radio Transmitters (NZART).
ARISS is to inspire, at least in some small way, the study of space to school children from all over the world, to speak to an astronaut who is a Radio Amateur and is on the International Space Station.
The Radio Amateurs in New Zealand who are in charge of this contact belong to the South Wairarapa Amateur Radio Club based in Featherston; Peter Norden (ZL2SJ) the New Zealand Co-ordinator for the ARISS program in New Zealand, and Ian Miles (ZL2TZW), assisted by Graeme Nelson (ZL2GDN) of Masterton.
The Wairarapa Home School Association (WHSA) is a support group for many of the home schoolers in the Wairarapa province. WHSA provides a point of communication for events and resources that are in the Wairarapa (and surrounding areas), and for parents to plan events that will provide for educational and social activities for their families. Some families live in remote areas in the farming community and others live in the country towns; Masterton is the main town in the province. The children who will be asking the questions are schooled by their parents, and the ages of the children involved range from 5 to 14 years.
The Wairarapa province which is located about 90 km north east from the capital city, Wellington, and is a rural community consisting of dairying, cattle, sheep, timber, cropping and some fruit growing industries.
Wairarapa is a Maori word meaning “sea of sparkling waters”, from Lake Wairarapa, a fresh water lake in the province.
The contact should be available live on the internet via http://www.discoveryreflector.ca/events.htm, and on radio via various Amateur Radio frequencies around the country.

Babies who face away from their parents in buggies might have their brain development compromised, research has found.
The author of the British research said the practice could leave children "emotionally isolated and language poor". The lack of stimulation talking, laughing and interacting with a parent could also undermine brain development.
The Dundee University study observed more than 2700 parent-child pairs throughout Britain. It found that:
25 per cent of parents using face-to-face buggies talked to their baby, compared with 11% of parents using an away-facing buggy.
Babies were more likely to laugh in a face-to-face buggy.
The heart rates of babies in face-to-face buggies were slightly lower, indicating less stress.
52% of babies in face-to-face buggies slept, compared with 27% in away-facing buggies.
Research author Dr Suzanne Zeedyk said a lowered heart rate or sleeping indicated reduced stress levels in babies.
"Our data suggests that for many babies today, life in a buggy is emotionally impoverished and possibly stressful. Stressed babies grow into anxious adults," she said.
"If babies are spending significant amounts of time in a baby buggy that undermines their ability to communicate easily with their parent, at an age when the brain is developing more than it will ever again in life, then this has to impact negatively on their development."
Paediatric Society of New Zealand president Dr Rosemary Marks said the effect on development would depend on the amount of time babies spent in a buggy and whether parents took other opportunities to interact with them.
"Children learn to talk by being talked to, so the more children are talked to, the more language they will learn. Any opportunities parents have for talking to their children is good."
Mothers at Plunket's Papanui parenting course favoured having their babies facing them, but said it was difficult to find buggies that made it possible.
Micayela Hunter liked being able to talk or sing to five-week-old Zara, but said it would be hard to find a suitable buggy when her daughter grew.
"I read about the benefits of having them face you, but it's quite funny, because that's not what's on the market," she said.
"It's just the accepted thing that they all do face the other way."
Course facilitator Kate Husband said parents buying buggies should also consider ventilation and colour to ensure babies did not overheat.
The source added: “Guy has never contributed towards the running of the family and his son’s schooling. Contrary to the image being projected, Madonna’s been the rock of the family. She’s the one who has the kids with her at all times.
“They are home-schooled and they go on the road with her.”
There are moments when we look at everyone around the dinner table, and it’s just crazy, but our family is the greatest thing we’ve done in our lives.’
So great, in fact, Jolie may put her blossoming Hollywood career on hold.
The Jolie-Pitt family: Angelina and Brad with four of their six children, Maddox, Shiloh, Zahara and Pax
She says she plans to stay home for another full year, and she expects acting to play a diminishing role in her life as time goes by. Since the twins were born almost four months ago, the older children have been home-schooled: ‘and they’ve had Mummy and Daddy every day for every meal, and they’ve been very close to us,’ Jolie said.
It makes the decision to take a new role ‘really hard,’ she said.
‘Who’s in school at that time? How can I be sure I don’t do too many long hours? Can the three youngest be on the set every day?’
‘As long as I can still be with my family, it’s fun,’ she added. ‘But I only want to do that, and I’m not looking for anything else.’
Being such a devoted mum may also play a part in what roles she takes - with her taking great pride in Kung Fu Panda, the kids cartoon movie in which she provided the voice of Tigress.

Subject: Germany: Melissa Busekros Has Been Moved to an Undisclosed
Location
======================================================================
From the HSLDA E-lert Service...
======================================================================
Dear HSLDA Members and Friends:
This month we explained to you what happened to the 15 year old German
girl, Melissa, who was being homeschooled, how she was removed from
her parent's home by 15 police officers and social workers, and placed
into a psychiatric unit at the Nuremburg clinic for school-phobia (the
account can be read at http://www.hslda.org/elert/archive/2007/02/20070205135755.asp ).
We have now received even more shocking news. Last week the German
authorities, without consulting or informing the parents, moved
Melissa to an undisclosed location. Her contact with her family has
been limited to a short conversation once per week. Last Friday the
court met to determine further placement of Melissa. The court refused
to change its decision but removed the first psychiatrist from the
case (Melissa indicated that most of what the first psychiatrist
reported was false and that she never said those things). The court is
having two new psychiatrists examine Melissa.
Melissa has been moved--for a third time--to a foster home in the
country. The first foster family didn't want Melissa anymore because
she did not "fit." According to Melissa, the family was apparently
bothered by her reading French and translating it into German.
Melissa's father, Hubert Busekros, said he and his lawyer were offered
a compromise this week that they could not accept. The authorities
wanted the Busekros's to give up custody of their other five children
in order to resolve this situation. Hubert said the authorities are
considering doing psychiatric exams on the other five children in
order to implicate Hubert and his wife as unfit parents and thereby
break up the family.
These actions against this homeschool family are an outrage. There are
approximately 40 other cases pending in Germany. Many homeschool
families have fled to Austria or another nearby country where
homeschooling is legal. The German government is persecuting these
innocent families without mercy. The German Embassy has indicated they
cannot allow "parallel cultures." Christian homeschooling is a
"parallel culture" that Germany does not want.
REQUESTED ACTION
1. Please continue to call or email the German Embassy and give them
this message:
"Over 40 innocent homeschool families have been prosecuted, fined, and
in some instances, had their children removed to state custody. This
is an outrage. Many homeschool families are fleeing Germany to nearby
European countries where homeschooling is legal. The most incredible
violation of human rights is the Busekros family, whose child was put
into a psychiatric ward and then removed to an undisclosed location,
all for the crime of homeschooling. Germany will not long be known as
a free nation if it suppresses the right to choose homeschooling."

3. If you wish, you can also send letters to Melissa and the rest of
the Busekros family. Melissa's parents have said they will try to get
the letters and cards to Melissa. Their home address is:

BACKGROUND
For several years homeschoolers have been fighting in the courts for
the right to homeschool. At this point, all legal action has been
exhausted with cases being lost throughout Germany, the higher
appellate courts, and even the Human Rights Court for the European
Union.
If you wish to assist the Germans in their struggle for homeschool
freedom, or assist homeschoolers of other countries, you can donate to
HSLDA's international fund via the Home School Foundation at https://secure.hslda.org/HSF/support.asp .
Your donation will be used to meet the needs of homeschoolers in
Germany. After meeting the known homeschooling needs in this country,
if there are remaining funds, this money will be transferred to the
Foundation's International Fund to meet homeschooling needs in other
countries.
Thank you for standing with these families and taking a moment to
assist them.
Sincerely,
Christopher J. Klicka
HSLDA Senior Counsel
Director of State and International Relations

We have much reason to be of concern here in New Zealand if Section 59 gets repealed or amended. We have Cindy Kiro's 4 tests: at birth, upon entering school, end of primary school and end of secondary school plus McCormack's "parent licensing" which will involve 7 tests during the child's life including a social worker assigned to each child. These could become law and it will be easier for authorities to push them through if Section 59 gets through. Then we will be at the mercy of the social worker and that person's world view. You can be sure that they will not like Home Educators because they can't see what is happening in our families. They can't influence the world view of our children. We have much to be concerned about.
We need to fight what is happening in Germany and we need to do all that is within our power to stop Section 59 being repealed or amended.

Dear Bruce,

As I shared with you over the weekend, German officials have taken fifteen year old Melissa Busekros from her family. All of the facts surrounding this outrageous action of German legal and police authorities can be found in English at http://www.netzwerk-bildungsfreiheit.de/html/pe_erlangen_en.html. The State's action clearly goes beyond what is justifiable. They took unreasonable measures for which they had no basis. They intimidated the family with a SWAT team of 15 police officers to take captive a 15 year old unsuspecting girl early in the morning, taking her to a state psychiatrist. The psychiatrist, after hours of interrogation, wrote a report which claimed that Melissa had delayed educational development of 1 year and school phobia. The judge, basing her decision on this report, gave the custody of the child over to the state and placed the child in a psychiatric ward. This was all done in a sped up action taking only four days. The family is devastated and has immediately appealed the judge's decision. They are asking for your support.
We are asking you, and everyone you know, to take action and send an email to the officials listed below. Your email should let them know that you do not support their actions which violate religious liberties and parental rights laws around the world, including in Germany . Then ask the official to please use the authority of their position to have Melissa released back into the custody of her parents. Also, email the court and ask them to reinstate the custody rights of the Busekros parents.

Here is an email that I received from Bruce Shortt this morning.
To all: The PBS program on homeschooling that was filmed in December is now being broadcast on PBS stations around the country. The link below will give you the program via streaming video.
Even though our responses were heavily edited, and despite PBS's reflexive liberalism, the program overall is mildly positive. In particular, the film footage of homeschooled children is quite helpful.
Our critic, the esteemed Herr Dr. Professor Reich of Stanford, who doesn't homeschool, probably doesn't even know many homeschoolers, but who nevertheless plays a homeschooling expert on TV, comes off visually as something of a busibody scold.
HSLDA--Victory for Homeschoolers in France Dear HSLDA Members and Friends: Thank you so much for your calls and emails to the French Embassy. In an incredible turnaround of events, the sponsor of the restrictive amendments which would have outlawed homeschooling has withdrawn his amendments. We believe that the international outcry played a pivotal role in helping secure this victory. The French Minister of the Family, Philippe Bas, vocally opposed several articles of this huge bill entitled "Protection de L'Enfance," which means for "Protection of the Children." He specifically opposed the sections regulating and essentially prohibiting homeschooling, saying in the French parliament: "As they are, I am not favorable to these amendments [numbers 127 and 128], I find them too restrictive. . . We must allow parents who, for instance, have three young children, a mother who is willing to take care of them and if they have decided to teach them to read-write-count--if that is their choice of living--provided that we can verify that the educational job is well done, then that freedom must be preserved." The homeschoolers in France are thankful that their right to teach their own children will not be taken away. These amendments, if passed, would have eliminated traditional homeschooling in France, only allowing homeschooling if the family could prove that it was necessary for their children to be taught at home due to a handicap or health reason. This is no longer a concern since these amendments have been withdrawn. French homeschoolers can breathe safe once again. Their freedom remains intact once again. Thank you, once again, for your willingness to take a few minutes to communicate your opposition to this draconian bill. We are thankful for God's mercy in this situation and that freedom can continue in France. Sincerely, Christopher J. I just received this from Chris Klicka. I have included New Zeland contacts in the middle of Chris's email. ====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== January 9, 2007 HSLDA--French Homeschoolers Need Your Help Immediately! Dear HSLDA members and friends: French homeschoolers are faced with a draconian bill which will be voted on by parliament within the next few days. We just received word about this bill today. Homeschooling is currently allowed in France. However, this bill would essentially outlaw homeschooling. No parent would be allowed to homeschool unless they showed that the health or handicap of their child makes it necessary for him or her to be taught at home. In addition, if a family could even prove they have a health issue or some other "serious" reason to justify their homeschool, they would then have to submit to a home visit by a government official each year. Also, their curriculum would be either provided by the "National Center of Correspondence Teaching (CNED)" or by an approved private correspondence school. French homeschoolers believe this bill will essentially outlaw homeschooling as they know it in France. They plead for your help to stop this restrictive bill. Homeschoolers in America have successfully stopped similar legislation in Ireland, the Czech Republic, and South Africa. In both Ireland and the Czech Republic, the restrictive homeschooling bills had already passed one house of parliament before we even got involved. Once we got involved the bills were stopped. At this point we need you to communicate with the French Embassy in Washington, D.C. In a few days we will send another email asking you to communicate directly with the parliament members. ACTION REQUESTED Please contact as soon as possible, by phone or email, the French Embassy and give them this message: "Amendments 127 & 128, which would virtually outlaw homeschooling, are being voted on by the French parliament. If passed, this would cause a travesty. We cannot believe that a free country like France would outlaw such a basic right as parents choosing to homeschool their children. Over two million children are being successfully homeschooled in America and over 6000 in New Zealand. Homeschooling works. We ask that you immediately convey to the French government our concern and request that the bill language prohibiting homeschooling in nearly all circumstances be withdrawn." Also, explain in a paragraph or two the wonderful success you have had with homeschooling. Ambassador Jean-David Levitte (202) 944-6000 HYPERLINK http://www.hslda.org/elink.asp?id=3600 HYPERLINK http://www.hslda.org/elink.asp?id=3601
BACKGROUND Homeschooling has long been allowed in France. Homeschoolers have to have regular testing and sometimes they are visited by an official, but for the most part operate freely. This bill would completely change that legal atmosphere and make it impossible for 95% of homeschoolers to operate. Please take time to help our brothers and sisters in France, where the homeschool movement is small and they do not have a lot of organizations or numbers. Nonetheless, there are many sincere parents who love their children and want to faithfully teach them at home principles from the Word of God and personally train their children. If homeschoolers don't try to help, who will? Please take a moment and contact the French Embassy. Thank you. Sincerely, Christopher J.
