The Dominion of 9 September 1996 declared. "Forty-two percent of schools in Mangere and Otara, NZ, are performing very poorly and need extra help, an Education Review Office report says. The report recommends substantial incentives to help principals and boards attract and retain highly qualified and experienced teachers." It is always interesting to notice how they treat problems among themselves and then with us. For problems they admit they have, the solution is to throw more money at it. If they reckon we have a problem, they do not suggest the same solution, but instead that we place our children in their institutions.
Primary and Secondary education in NZ will receive $2.35 billion in '96-97 for the 680,000 students of that age. That is $3,455 each. And what good will it be doing for them? The illiteracy rates, crime rates, bullying, drug use, gang recruitment, condom instruction, and sexual experimentation among school children does not go down as they pour in more money .... it all goes up! These seem to be the inevitable effects of state funded compulsory education here in the west.
Please, please, never flag when it comes to defending our responsibility before God to home educate our own children in the way our consciences see fit. Let me quote the founder of Westminster Theological Seminary, Professor J. Gresham Machen:
If liberty is not maintained with regard to education, there is no use trying to maintain it in any other sphere. If you give the bureaucrats the children you might just as well give them everything else.

To demonstrate the kind of hold the school system has on parents and children, here is disturbing bit from the Sunday Star-Times of 31 March 1996. A top psychiatrist is calling for a national investigation into the amount of a drug known as "speed" being given to hyperactive children to quieten them down. John Werry, emeritus professor of psychiatry at Auckland University, said .... it was worrying that every time an overseas expert visited NZ to talk about Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) there was an upsurge in cases.
We get a whole bunch of parents knocking on our door and saying their kids have ADD and need Ritalin," he said...."The most reason for parents coming along is because the school has complained, the child is unable to sit still on a mat and things like that," he said.
Normal active fun-loving kids wanting to be mentally and sensory stimulated so that they can learn about their world and move toward fulfilling their God-given task of having dominion over the earth have to sit through brain-dead, non-sexist, non-confrontational, non-competitive, value-free, politically-correct activities of total irrelevance. No wonder they start climbing the walls. So experts suggest they drug the kids to keep 'em in line. We have also had parents come to us to find out about home schooling after the teachers have suggested to the parents they may want to keep their troublesome children out of school permanently. We cannot thank the Lord sufficiently for leading us to rescue our children OUT of such chaos. Please continue to pray for our brothers and sisters who are still blinded to all this and who continue to send their children to these state institutions.
School Gate Chaos
An article in Education Today of August 1996, promoting the Kidsafe Week 96 of September 7-13 as New Zealand's first national safety week devoted to child safety, had its focus on child accidents. In NZ each year 20 child pedestrians die and a further 350 are hospitalized. "Pedestrian injuries are the biggest killer of our primary school aged children -- responsible for more child deaths than all infectious diseases combined. Since many pedestrian injuries occur in and around school -- often while children are being dropped off or picked up, a key focus this year is school gate chaos." I couldn't have coined a better phrase myself: it really sums up the whole institution, if you ask me.
But that isn't all. "Parents delivering and collecting their children are posing an increasing problem for schools." There you go again. ..those pesky parents getting in the way of their children's education, this time by posing increasing safety problems for school. It seems parents involved in state schooling just can't win. Why do they bother? They should all home school.
One of my favourite dreams is watching all the state schools close down for lack of customers!! This lack of customers would not be due to a nil birth rate, but instead to a free market in education which would allow private and home schools to flourish unhindered, their standards of excellence impossible to resist. Now that I've said it, you know, I don't think the state would ever allow such a situation to occur, since they would have to protect the investment in all those taxpayer-funded schools and tax-payer-funded teaching jobs and especially all those taxpayer-funded Ministry of Education positions. To protect its own existence and their own jobs the state education bureaucrats will have to clamp down on the growth of home schooling somewhere along the line. Just watch how they use these annual reports, the supervisory allowance and the recently amended teacher registration bill over the next year or two.

Our family had a lot of fun a few weeks ago when we appeared on the Holmes Show as the "Disciples of Discipline"! I had written an article on spanking, the parental skill of the judicial application of the rod of correction, which appeared in a recent edition of Above Rubies. Someone had sent a copy to Holmes.He had read in that article that we were Christians, spank our children, are home schoolers and foster parents as well. He may have thought he was on to some fringe people or extremists, which always make good stories. Well, if you ever find yourself in this position,and I hope many of you do, since many New Zealand parents are literally tearing apart at the seams because they do not know are totally unaware of the educational and parenting skills many of us Christian home schoolers take for granted. If you are ever in this position, you must plan ahead. Speak only in measured and calm tones. Decide before hand what you want to say and what you do not want to say. Anticipate the trickiest questions they might ask and practise how you should answer them.
They spent the first two hours with us filming and talking about home schooling. They then indicated that they were favourably impressed with us as a family. So we relaxed about the upcoming interview on spanking. And sure enough, they were easy on us and did not try to make us look bad. We believe the Lord also overruled when the final cut and editing took place as His Biblical standards seem to have come across accurately.
So where is the debate on whether to ban smacking in the horne up to at this point? I rang Labour MP for Hamilton East, Dianne Yates' office, and they assured me she had no further plans to introduce legislation of that sort. Someone rang me to say that the Minister of Justice also had no plans to amend the Crimes Act to make spanking illegal. I rang the office of the Commissioner for Children in Wellington to see what they were up to. Although they have nothing in the pipeline at the moment, it was conveyed to me that when the political and social climate was right, they would be considering moves to ban parental corporal discipline. They have already published several pamphlets with titles like, "Hitting Children Is Unjust." Now, most of us would hopefully agree that to haul off and hit a child with a back-hand across the mouth because you were annoyed is totally unacceptable. But to this crowd, hitting also means smacking and spanking no matter how lightIy or lovingly done. They also sent me a disturbing article by a Ms Penelope Leach, titled, "What's Wrong with Hitting Children?" It is terribly biased. Check out this paragraph explaining that abused children seem to blame themselves for the abuse, and never the one who abused them. Watch the language carefully:
"A study of a very large sample of University students, reported in the international journal Child Abuse and Neglect shows that this tendency to self-blame for physical punishment continues into adult life and therefore into parenthood. Subjects retrospectively justified not only punitive but brutal parents by assigning crimes to the children they used to be. Far from blaming those parents, they often expressed gratitude to them for the way they themselves had grown up. And during interviews, they consistently played down the violence used towards them. For example, 80% reported being spanked as children, but only 40% reported that they had received 'physical punishment'; for many young adults, then, smacked bottoms were too trivial to count. Some subjects had suffered lasting bruises from parental beatings, but only 10% of them considered those punishments to have been excessive or cruel. Even amongst the group of students who had received hospital treatment for fractures, or other serious injuries resulting from parental punishment, only 43 % classified themselves as having been 'abused' or 'cruelly treated'. The study concludes that 'the recipients of punitive physical discipline are the least likely to recognise its inappropriateness."
I find this paragraph one of the best promotions IN FAVOUR OF smacking from the pen of unbelievers that I have ever read. As much as the authors clearly despise spanking, those University student-subjects of theirs clearly did not. So the authors had to fabricate imaginative interpretations of their findings to agree with what they wanted to find . These poor, confused University students were so perverted by their loyalty to their parents that they were unable to think for themselves. Even among those who definitely had been subjected to excessive force, the kind that broke bones, only 43 % said they had been 'abused' or 'cruelly treated'. So tbe study reckoned that these adult aged University students were a) deluded, b) unable to recognise their ill treatment and c) so rnessed up as to actually express gratitude for the way their parents had treated them. In other words, if you disagree with the authors' pre-commitment to the idea that spanking is never justified, by their reckoning you need professional help for you are clearly not a full packet of biscuits!
