Jan. 9, 2007 - It's The Little Things In Life
It's the little things that make life so exciting...
Today I baked a scrumptious apple coffee cake for the Bible study Annette hosted this evening. Said coffee cake has a yummy glaze that is a mixture of melted butter, confectioners' sugar, and a little water. Today I was making it and couldn't figure out WHY the glaze was not runny. I consulted Annette and she suggested I add more water, so I did. I added more water (much more than the recipe called for) and it was runnier, but still not runny like a "glaze" should be. Well, Annette asked me, "Are you sure it was powdered sugar you used for it?" I answered, "Yes." She asked where I got it and when I told her, we realized it was actually CORNSTARCH I had used instead of confectioners' sugar.
The explained why the glaze I was attempting to make was so THICK!
I tried the glaze again and it worked out much better using CONFECTIONERS' SUGAR instead of the CORNSTARCH.
I hope those who read my blog laugh over my little blunders and don't think I'm TOO much of a ditz.
I certainly had a good laugh over it!
Yes, it's the little things in life that make it so exciting even if they also make you lose a bit of your sanity.

Oh yeah.....there are a few of us ditz's (?!) out here. You are reminding me of when I was a newlywed missionary in France. We had splurged on some ground beef for this meatball recipe. The sauce just wasn't thickening up.....and I was working SO hard on it. I was being careful not to bust up the meatballs as I slowly stirred in the thickener. I called out to Bob, "Honey, I don't think they make cornstarch the same way here as we do in America. This is taking forever!" He came to take a look, then a taste. I had added this astronomically large amount of confectioners sugar. We had spent so much of our food budget on that meat, that we just had to eat those sweet meatballs. He started teaching me how to figure out the French labels after that.

LOL!
Reminds me of the first chilli I made. Ground beef browned..check.. mixed spices in.. check.. tomatoe paste, beans etc..check.. cook.. check..
Hubbys walks in and asks if I am making fruit cake.
NOPE that is the yummy smell of chilli I tell him.
We sit down and he takes a bite.. fruitcake flavoured chilli.. interesting..
it turns out that mixewd spices in England is different from spices in America.. I'd added a mixed spice blend was indeed used in fruit cakes :0)
I HAVE NEVER lived the fruit cake chilli down LOL
Thanks for sharing the giggle and sparking a million memories!

That reminded me of Loretta Lynn in "Coal Miner's Daughter" who put salt instead of sugar in a cake.
