...Hi homeschool world, rain has finally let up after two straight days. Not stormy just persistent rain. The kiddles and me were gettiing a bit testy, so luckily it stopped, still overcast but dry enough to walk down to the park and have a run around, climb and swing.
'Lisey is really doing better this year, we've discussed her ( and my) problem of not being able to remember stuff. We tried all sorts of drill last year to get the basic facts like addition, multiplication etc learnt to no avail, this year we are going down a different track. We are using a book called Easy Maths by Bill Handley, not sure if its still in print, but as far as I can see so far the technique he uses works for 'Lisey. She is able to work out, in her head, a multiplication problem (talking single multipliers) and get the answer right! After only two lessons!!
Tthe way he does it is to use a technique that includes writing down the steps in, symbol form, that she needs to use to find the answer.
This book which was originally recomended to me is also written by Bill Handley. I assume it contains similar instructions, but haven't read it yet.

We are also using copywork instead of drill to try and remember the facts. She does seem to remember better when she writes, like her spelling. No problems with spelling if she writes them down, but if she doesn't write a word very often is more likely to forget or have problems.
So I just write down the facts to be learnt for the week, including the answers, and she copies them till she has them learnt. Pretty basic, she does enjoy it better and I think it suits her style. We'll have to see how these two work out, but I think we're on the right track.

'Merah Moo, is learning to write her letters, not much to say really, she picks things up easily, and enjoys the small amount of work she is doing. Always wants more maths, and reading, and loves drawing and pretending to write in her journal.
Well that's our bit for now.
