more on reading lists

Posted in Literature

Zarek is beginning his 7th grade year now, although we are still finishing up curriculum that we started in Feb. of this year.  I wanted to help him increase his reading level by reading some more challenging books and also to make sure he is reading quality literature and not some of the garbage that they have targeted at pre-teen/teen boys these days...well this applies for girls also I suppose!  He started working on this reading list over the summer and has enjoyed each book so far.

Now, I would like to make a list for my daughter, age 10.  The problem is that she does not like reading books that are a challenge.  This girl will dissolve into tears if something is too difficult, but I'd like for her to be reading quality books as well and get away from Magic Tree House and this other fairy series she reads.  I'm open to suggestions.  Does anyone know any great quality books on a 4th/5th grade reading level that a girl would find very interesting?  Thanks for any help!

Would you mnd sharing the reading list you used for your son? I have an 11 yo Daughter that I am trying to get away from the Magic Tree House/Pony Pals books. I know she can read harder books but she always goes for the easy ones in her free reading time.

Hmm,

Here are a few I thought of off the top of my head:
A Wrinkle in Time
The Royal Diaries (each one is about a different princess while she was a little girl)
Dear America Diaries (better than the American Girl books)
The Little Princess
Mandy (the one by Julie Andrews)
The Last Of The Really Great Whangdoodles (I love this book)
The 21 Balloons
The Wheel On the School (another on of my favorites)
Door In The Wall
Adam of the Road
Secret Garden
Charolette's Web
Heidi
Wind in the Willows
Black Beauty
The Jungle Book
Tangle Wood Tales
Just So Stories
Rikki Tikki Tavi
The Wonder Book For Boys and Girls

Any collection of real fairytales, myths and legends from around the world are great at this age and usually you can find 4th/5th grade level in the Dover Collections for just a dollar or two.

OK I have to make myself stop, but let me know if you want more :) It would help to know what she likes or wants out of a story.

She will LOVE these authors!

How to Eat Fried Worms
Sideways Stories from Wayside School (actually ANYTHING by Louis Sachar)
Where the Sidewalk Ends ( or anything by Shel Silverstein)
Not One Damsel In Distress: World Folktales for Strong Girls

And these books are 'tiny' in size, making them look easy, but they have great themes and are very good bridges into middle school level books.
Call It Courage
The Cay
Shiloh
Sounder

Oh, and I meant to add... Wind In the Willows is a great read aloud. I have had a few kids get frustrated because of the use of a lot of English terms so they get confused even though it is only supposed to written on a 4th grade level.
