I taught myself to knit 2 yrs ago with the book "Stitch N' Bitch". Yea, I know, the title is a little out there, but the book gives really good instructions and I still refer to it! To help yourself remember what stitch you are supposed to be doing, look at the stitch below it. If it looks like a "v" then it is a knit stitch. If it looks like a dash (-) or like a loop around the neck of your stitch, then that is a purl. If you are making a 2x2 rib, you can tell if you need to make a knit or a purl by looking at the stitch below it. If it looks like a knit, then you should knit. If it looks like a purl, then you should purl. I wish I was there to help you more...hope I didn't confuse you even worse! Make lots of scarves and try out different stitches and stuff. Use cheap yarn and if you mess up, just keep going! Since you are first starting out, don't buy yarns with all the little fuzzies. That can make it confusing! Buy the cheap Red Heart brand, plain yarn and make at least 4 scarves. You will get so much practice that it will be like second nature!
