Summer is slipping away from me.

Posted in Daily Life • Jul. 7, 2008
I haven't done anything that I had planned, haven't read any of the books I need to read.  We've been going to the beach a lot, taking nature walks and doing nature studies.  Which is all good, but I need to get busy.  The problem is I have no desire to do so.  Our oldest will be 14 on Wednesday!  We're going to play putt-putt, have a picnic and then go to the beach with a few other families.  Then I'm going to take him to see a movie of his choice, just he and I, maybe Daddy too if he's off from work when we go.  We're not going to do a party this year.  He's getting a very nice tennis racquet for his presents.  His coach has gotten him one at cost, so it will only be about $100 for us, so that is his gift.  He just broke his at practice last week, but he needed a new one anyway.  He was in a tennis tournament at the end of June and he won in his age division.  Alexis got the wires on her braces last week and was in pain for a couple of days, but now she's fine.  The little ones have been playing with Legos a lot when we are home.  Today I had everyone do a little bit of school work and we're having a "no screen" day so I better get off from here myself!  I'm reading aloud Swallows and Amazons to them, which I don't think they're really enjoying, although it is a nice, old fashioned story.  We're also finishing up Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, which I've been rereading to them forever...it's time to move on.  I've read all the Harry's aloud to Zarek when he was younger, then reread them all aloud to Alexis and him, now I'm rereading them all for the 3rd time to Cait and Brett.  They're great books though and I enjoy reading them again and again.

A Visit to the Heart Doctor

Posted in Daily Life • Apr. 16, 2008

Yesterday Jody and I woke up early to take Caitlyn to her new cardiologist.  She was nervous and so was I, wondering if the doctor would be good, would the facility be nice and the nurses and techs friendly and kind?  Well, we were all very happy, her new doctor was wonderful and took a lot of time to talk to us, even about finding a good pediatrician for the children since we still haven’t found one we’re happy with.  The sonogram tech was very gentle and nice.  In CT Caitlyn always said getting the sonogram of her heart hurt because they’d push down too hard on her chest and that was the main thing she was nervous about.  She was pleased to find out there was a TV in the ceiling she could watch and she got to pick a DVD.  These take about 20-25 minutes so after about 10 I asked her if it hurt and she said not a bit.  Afterwards she told me it didn’t hurt at all.  I was very happy this lady was so gentle.  All in all it was a great experience, her heart is doing wonderful, the two reasons she may still have to have surgery weren’t showing any signs of becoming problems and the doctor said she would be a great candidate for a catheter closing of her hole, so even if it did need to be closed that she wouldn’t have to be opened up.  All around great news.

Across the street from the cardio center was a Peterbrooke Chocolatier so we went over there, watched the production line for a bit, tried some samples and bought some chocolates for the children.  They are VERY expensive, so we just bought a bit, but while we were picking out what we wanted, one of the workers gave Caitlyn a Nutter Butter dipped in thick chocolate.  She loves Nutter  Butters!

Then we swung by the library, picked up some holds, put gas in my van and then we went out to lunch at Panda Express where Caitlyn has been wanting to eat.  Um, we won’t be eating there again, the food was terrible.  Jody ate his and almost all of ours too.  Then we stopped at Publix on the way home and did some grocery shopping and met a fellow Kraft employee of Jody’s that I talk to on the phone, but hadn’t met yet.  Finally, we got home, put the groceries away and Jody had to run to work.  The day was cold and windy, the kids rode bikes for about 15 minutes and then wanted to come in.  I read to them most of the afternoon and we had a light dinner of sandwiches.

Today we’ve done lots of school, besides the basics we read about Saudi Arabia, did work on our huge wall map and did some more catching up with our Travel Diaries and also did our Saudi pages.  We’ll be learning about a few more Middle East countries and then having our Middle Eastern dinner, instead of doing a dinner for each M. E. country.  Easier on me.  I told them we were going to have lamb with our meal and the girls are disgusted.  To eat a sweet little lamb??  Hopefully when the time comes they will try it at least.

That’s it for today, everyone is playing outside with friends/riding bikes with friends.  I’ve almost caught up on the laundry and tomorrow we have a very busy day.  Tennis, art class, park day, tennis again, then Zarek has CAP.  We’ll hardly be home, so I’m glad we were home all day today to get work done and get the house in some kind of order.

We're back!

Posted in Daily Life • Mar. 9, 2008
We had an awesome vacation.
I'm not done blogging about it yet, but if you want to see pictures and read about it, then go here:  The LaMere Family

Friday we were back to school.
Zarek is in India with Sonlight 5.
In Children Around the World we just finished up Mexico.
We need to have a really good school week this week because my dh's parents might be coming to visit next week and if so we'll take the week off.  That will be our spring break instead of the first week in April when we were going to take it to coincide with the ps spring break.  I was doing that for my ds' friends.  They are always bummed if they're off and Zarek isn't.  Well, they'll just have to deal I guess.

Manatees!

Posted in Daily Life • Feb. 23, 2008
Our daughter Alexis has been in love with manatees ever since we moved to Florida and in less than 2 weeks we are going over to the gulf side and swimming with them in the wild, in a spring-fed river.  We are so excited!!  We went to the library yesterday and checked out every book on manatees we could find so we will be extra knowledgeable about them.  We going to buy some disposable underwater cameras and the people who take us out will film it and we can buy the DVD.  My only fear now is that we won't encounter them, but I'm told in 5 years they've never had that happen and now is the peak time to go before they start going north around April.  But there are manatees year round at this place, just not as many as there are now.

So, we're getting ready for our trip.  I want to buy myself a new camera as I'm not happy with the one I have now, but I'm debating on if I should spend the money or not.

We also plan on visiting Waki Weechi, FL too, where the have an underwater mermaid show...these women have been putting on mermaid costumes for decades and doing an underwater "ballet" type show.  I know...it's kinda hokey, which is why I'm dying to see it.  It's in all the Florida travel books and by George, I'm determined to see it myself...although it is pricey...it better be entertaining!! LOL.
We'll also visit a wildlife park that has many Florida animals, including manatees that have been rescued, ones that were injured or abandoned calves.  Should be a funducational trip...my favorite kind!

Prayers for a safe trip would be wonderful to anyone reading this!

It's a new year!

Posted in Daily Life • Jan. 2, 2008
Wow, 2008!!
We had a nice, quiet New Year's Eve here.  Jody worked on the van and the kids played outside with their friends all day.  Around 10PM, Jody and the kids set off fireworks and lit up some sparklers.  Some people a few streets over also gave us quite a nice fireworks display...we wondered where they bought them...but oh well, they were fun to watch.

Christmas eve was great, we went over to my brother and sister-in-laws house, had a huge yummy dinner and desserts.  My brother-in-law gave the kids a Nintendo Wii...boy were they thrilled!!!

Christmas day we stayed at home, it was cold and rainy.  We ate leftovers and watched Pirates 3 and watched the kids play with the Wii, that system is so much fun.  I don't like video games usually, but I do like how they're up and moving around and laughing when they play this.

We've been enjoying our break from school and we were going to start back up today but I decided to wait until Monday the 7th.

Tennis lessons were canceled today because it's too cold and windy, so we're just staying home or going to friends houses around here or having them over.  I really need to clean...but if you've read this blog over any length of time, you'll know I hate to clean and put it off as long as possible.  I want to change that for the new year, in that I want my house cleaner...but I am still unmotivated.

I've also been making lists of foods I want to cut down on for our family, and another list of healthy foods to buy when I shop.  I think we eat pretty healthy compared to most families these days, but I want to make it even better.

I need to start looking over the children's curriculum again and get ready to start back up.  I'm also debating on what to use next year.  I need to take a trip to the homeschool store soon and get a few things, one being a book on homeschooling high school, because Zarek will start high school in the fall!!  I still can't believe it.

Being Productive...

Posted in Daily Life • Dec. 23, 2007
So yesterday I made zucchini muffins and chocolate chip cookies.  Last night all the kids except Zarek wanted to camp out by the Christmas tree in the living room so I let them blow up the air mattress and Brett brought out his sleeping bag and they slept by the tree, I left it lit up all night for them.
We watched TV and I popped popcorn but when it was around 10:45 I turned the TV off and read to them from Harry Potter and the Goblet of  Fire until Caitlyn fell asleep, then I went to bed and they fell right to sleep too.

This morning we all slept until 9AM, even Daddy!  Thankfully he can make his own hours for the most part.  He had his alarm set early but he woke up and turned it off, as usual.

Today I've done two loads of laundry, and all the clothes are put away.  I cleaned up and dusted my room.
Zarek made my bed for me...what a sweetie!

NOW...for the to-do list of the day:
1.  make more goodies!  Brownies, blondies and snickerdoodles are on the menu
2.  have children deliver tins/Christmas cards to neighbors
3.  have children deliver Christmas gifts to their friends who are neighbors
4.  clean kitchen and keep it clean as I bake
5.  vacuum entire house (kids will help)
6.  continue with laundry and put it away
7.  make up stuffing for tomorrow's turkey
8. clean both bathrooms
9.  clean kitty box (Caitlyn)
10.  kids clean their rooms

I think that's it for now...

It's almost Christmas!

Posted in Daily Life • Dec. 21, 2007
I've been doing a lot of shopping and I'm just about done!
Tomorrow Zarek has tennis at 10:00-11:30 and again at 1:00-4:00.  Alexis is going shopping with her Aunt Janey for some clothes, which is my brother and sister-in law's birthday gift to her.
Christmas eve we're going over to their house for dinner.  I'm making a turkey and stuffing and bringing the dinner rolls, so I'm getting off pretty easy.  Not looking forward to making another turkey so soon after Thanksgiving though.
The weather has been nice except today it was rainy and windy.
I got out all my Christmas cards kind of late, I was waiting on new address labels and finally I could wait no longer...then 3 days later the correct labels showed up.  Oh well!
I need to do some baking to give our neighbors tins full of goodies, but I've been so lazy!

For Christmas day I'm making a beef roast, mashed potatoes, carrots and rolls and for dessert, my homemade red velvet cake.

The kids have been playing with friends and each other and I've been doing a lot of knitting and reading.  I really need to get on the ball though because I've neglected the house and the baking...perhaps I'll be productive this weekend!!

Being sick and learning to knit...

Posted in Daily Life • Nov. 24, 2007

Well our Thanksgiving was very relaxing and nice.  All the food came out perfect!  I’ve been sick for 5 days so after we were done eating and cleaning up (around 6PM) I retired to my bedroom to read and knit.  Yesterday was the worst day and I spent the whole day in bed and snapping at the children because they thought it was time to put on a circus out in the living room.  Today I’m feeling better (not all better yet) and I’ve apologized for being a monster yesterday.  I went grocery shopping for a few things with Jody before he went to work and we were able to have a quick lunch together at a Chinese place by the grocery store.

We used up the rest of the turkey leftovers tonight, I made turkey tacos.  The kids liked them, except for Brett and I personally thought they were gross.  Turkey in tacos just didn’t taste right and I couldn’t get past it.

The two books I’m reading right now are Anne of  Avonlea and The Knitting Circle.  I’ve been alternating between the two, depending on my mood.

A few days ago I taught myself how to purl, finally!  For a while I thought I was purling, but then comparing my knitting to the picture I could tell something wasn’t right.  Then finally I did it and I was so proud of myself!

Then I learned the stocking stitch where you knit one row, purl the next and continue in that pattern.  I kept messing up after a few rows.  I have a bad memory and I’d do a row wrong and I know you can pull it out but every time I try to pull out a row I think I don’t have all the stitches on the same row (make sense?) so I keep pulling until there is nothing left.  I need help!

The past two days I’ve worked on Ribbing 1 and Ribbing 2 and I understand how to do them, can do them for a few rows, was doing great there for quite a while and…you guessed it, I messed up, tried to pull out and pick up and couldn’t.  So now I’m making a long thing scarf in the stocking stitch, because after trying the ribbing ones, the stocking stitch is easy-peasy.

Will this just take time or am I not a knitter at heart?

Any tips?  I have two books on knitting and one is called The Idiot’s Guide to Knitting and Crocheting…I can’t understand it all, so I must be worse than an idiot.

Whoo-Hoo, It's Friday!

Posted in Daily Life • Nov. 16, 2007

Yes, it’s been a long week.

I’m really just tired of school work and I’m so glad that we only have two days this coming week and then 5 days off.  I think the kids and I really need this time off.  We’ll be using the day before Thanksgiving to make as much as we can, so Thanksgiving Day will be easiler, less stressful.  We’re not having any company.  The only family we have here is Jody’s brother and his family, I was inviting them but they already had plans.  I guess I wasn’t quick enough. :)
Here’s our menu for Thanksgiving:

  1. Turkey (of course!)
  2. Stuffing
  3. Mashed potatoes
  4. Corn
  5. Green bean casserole
  6. Cole slaw
  7. Cranberry sauce
  8. Dinner rolls
  9. Double layer pumpkin cheesecake
  10. Autumn apple pie

Desserts, stuffing and cole slaw will be made the day before…if all goes according to plan.

I can’t wait!  We’ll also spend the day before reading all of our Thanksgiving books and thanks to a good friend we have a new one about Thanksgiving in our new state of Florida.  I think it’s called The Real First Thanksgiving…but I’m not positive.  I’m looking forward to reading that one.

Well it's been a while...

Posted in Daily Life • Oct. 15, 2007

Not much going on here, just school, school, school and some playing in between.

All the kids will be able to take tennis lessons.

Brett will start this Wednesday with his two sisters.  I think Alexis will want to move up into the older group as soon as she can and leave the younger 2 together.  We'll see how she does and if she even wants to stick with it.

Zarek is enjoying his lessons and getting better.  The weather here has been beautiful, low 80's with a nice breeze, getting down into the 60 and high 50's at night.  Gorgeous!!!  This is my ideal weather for fall and spring...ok it can stay like this for winter too.

School is going well, Zarek is staying on track, doing a lot of writing this year and I *think* he's getting better at it too.  Alexis is doing well but I think she needs some more to do, so we'll be adding back her writing curriculum this week.

I'm staying up to date with Homeschool Tracker, so that's good.  We finished up our British week and are a bit more than halfway through with our Ireland week, I'm still waiting on books and CD's for our Ireland week from the library, I have a feeling they're not going to come in time.  This library system is so slow!

Well I have to run to Super Walmart and get some groceries.  Later Alexis has drama class and we need to check back at the store to see if they have some Nike's in Caitlyn's size now, or I'll have to make the 40 minute trek to the mall tomorrow.  Don't wanna have to do that!!

Thursday

Posted in Daily Life • Oct. 4, 2007

Today was rainy all day long, we've gotten quite a bit of rain this week but today the sun did not even peek out.  Brett was very disapointed because we bought him a tennis racquet today and he wanted so much to go outside and play with his brother.  He was actually upset with me that I wouldn't let him out in the rain to try his new toy.

Zarek started tennis lessons yesterday and he enjoyed them.  An hour and a half is quite a work out!  Right there by the tennis courts are basketball courts, a park and a field.  I was going to take the kids shopping but yesterday evening was so beautiful that we stayed and played  the whole time instead.

Alexis started her drama/theater class Monday and she and Caitlyn will begin their tennis lessons soon.  Brett needs to be 8 to join in with the girls group but I just emailed to see if maybe he could squeak in since he's 7.5.  He would be so jazzed if they let him start now.  Zarek's lessons have homeschoolers and public schoolers and they meet twice a week.  This younger group is with the same coach but is a homeschool only group and will meet once a week.

The girls made grilled cheese sandwiches for everyone for lunch today and no one burned themselves this time!  They were very proud.

We had homemade mexican food for dinner and everyone is about to go to bed.  A nice, relaxing, rainy day.

A Great Weekend

Posted in Daily Life • Sep. 30, 2007

The weather has been absolutely beautiful!!  Today the A/C is off and the windows are open.  Saturday and today have been spent in good, free fun...playing outside with friends.  My children have had such a good time, today they had a field hockey game going on in our yard with their neighborhood friends and played for hours.

I've been doing something very exciting...catching up on laundry.  This morning I was awakened to my hubby asking "where are all my black socks?"  I looked in his hands...he was holding two black socks.  I said "you have a pair, why are you asking?"  Apparently he had to look (GASP!) for them because they weren't put together.  Oh the tragedy.  I almost felt bad...almost...

So I decided I better get the laundry done today.

Tonight is a no-cook night for me, so we're having pizza.

I've spent my time in between laundry folding and switching, entering school assignemnts into Homeschool Tracker.  It takes me a while, not sure if I'm just slow or it really is a lot of work. LOL

Tomorrow morning we are going to a corn maze/farm, the kids are really excited.

St. Marys, GA

Posted in Daily Life • Sep. 3, 2007

We had a great day today, Jody had the day off and we headed for the Catfish Fesitval in Kingsland.  It was pretty small and not much to do so after a while we decided to check out historic St. Marys, GA.  It was beautiful and very quiet today.  We had such a nice time just walking around, enjoying nature and each other.

Lots of green space to run around and GASP, trees to climb.  Something Brett hasn't been able to enjoy since we moved to FL from CT.  We saw many crabs, snails and butterflies today.  We checked out a small museum about Cumberland Island, which has wild horses on it.  Once when we were on vacation here we went to Cumberland Island and saw the horses and enjoyed the secluded beach for the day.   Now we're planning a trip back to camp out and enjoy their museums and nature.

It's been a great day, tomorrow...back to school!

Last day of summer vacation!

Posted in Daily Life • Aug. 19, 2007

Tomorrow starts the new school year for us, and it's also the day the public schools start here, I didn't plan it that way, but it works out well.

Yesterday Caitlyn and I went to Home Depot and purchased some flowers and bushes and came home, very hot, but proud.  Daddy and Alexis helped us to plant them.  Jody had made my square foot garden box while we were doing that, now I just have to fill it and buy the plants, we'll be growing veggies, I can't wait!

Today we are just cleaning and getting ready for school.  We all stayed up late and some of us have headaches, so we're taking it easy.  I do need to go to Target, but if it doesn't get done, we'll live.

Tomorrow at noon I have an eye appointment to pick up my contacts and then we'll go grocery shopping.  I'm bummed my eye appt. is right in the middle of the first day of school, but we'll manage.  It will give us a break and an easy first day.  It will be an easy first week too because Friday we're going to the beach with our homeschool group.

I've decided that we are just going to finish Modern History as quickly as possible and start our new curriculum's the day after Labor Day, which I believe will be Tues. Sept. 4th.  At my sidebar I've listed our new studies for each child.  Alexis, Cait and Brett will all be doing the same main program.  Zarek and I went through his Sonlight items last night and he was very excited about it.  He was looking forward to the projects he'll have to do.  I hope he keeps his enthusiasm!!

So, the new plan is get through WWII, make a president sheet for all the presidents up to present, and touch on the main points of history from after WWII to present.  Very briefly.  They will both get Modern History again in high school.  Ok, thats it, I just took some excedrin, my head is killing me, I'm going to lay down for a bit and see if I can get rid of this headache.

My baby is 13

Posted in Daily Life • Jul. 9, 2007

Our oldest son turned 13 today.  It's sad, they grow up so fast.  Zarek went golfing with his Dad, Uncle and Grandpa all day today, this is a picture before they left.  He came home with a Titlest (is that right??) hat.  We had a cookout and had the family over, then cake and ice cream, a walk and Daddy shot off the rest of the fireworks that Zarek had saved from the Fourth of July.

Jody's parents came for a surprise visit, they were staying with his brother, but tonight they are staying here, they leave in the morning.  The kids are over tired and out there busy entertaining their grandparents.

Yesterday we went to the pool for a while, out to lunch with grandparents and last night we all went out to dinner.

I'm tired myself.  Wishing I was in bed.

Friday

Posted in Daily Life • Jun. 1, 2007

We've really had a relaxed week this week.  I blame it all on Memorial Day, it threw us all off.  Monday we went to the zoo and had a nice time, came home and Daddy grilled dinner for us and the kiddos had their friends over to eat.

Tuesday we did school and played outside, Wednesday we did school...now Thursday I made the mistake of letting the kids see the new Harry Potter movie trailer on the internet, which led to excitement about the upcoming 5th movie, which led Cait and Brett to ask me to read Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.

See I read all the HP books to Zarek when he was around 8 or 9.  Then I had to reread them all to Alexis when she was that age...with Zarek listening in again.

Well NOW it's Cait's turn and I'm not doing it a fourth time, so I've been rereading them all to all four of the children. We are now on Book 2 and they think Mommy can read them all again up through 6 and get them ready for book 7 AND the 5th movie.

SO I declared that Thursday would be a reading Harry Potter Day and they got our their drawing stuff, Alexis got out her knitting and I read until I could read no more.

Then Daddy came home and we went to the beach and had the BEST time, the water was so warm and we all got in it.  We sat out in the water, close to the shore as the tide was coming in and the waves were crashing over us.  It was just so much fun being together and letting the waves toss us around.  We all got scraped up a bit, but hey that always happens here when you get in the ocean.

Today I just wasn't in the mood for school. Brett did his phonics and math, Cait escaped, Zarek and Alexis did some things like grammar and vocab. but I noticed neither did math...AND I read HP 2 some more.  We are almost done with it now.  Then the kids played outside with friends, then we had dinner (spaghetti) and at 7:30 their friends came over for movie night.  They're watching LOTR 1, I popped popcorn and made lemonade and I don't know HOW they are watching the movie, they are talking more than the characters on the movie are...but I've told them 100x to be quiet and they won't, so I guess no one cares they cannot hear anything. Oh well!

I've been reading and playing on the internet. Soon the movie will be over and it will be bedtime...well maybe I'll read a little Harry first.

I haven't updated in a while, but I have nothing to say.

We've been trucking along doing our curriculum, I've already fell behind one week on the schedule I made up for myself.  On a good note, the younger two have been consistently getting their work done early in the day. We did it one morning and I made such a big deal of saying "now you're done, you have the whole day ahead of you and no school!" So now Brett comes to me early every morning with his books in his hands, ready to get it done.

Topics we've studied lately are: The Suez Canal and Ned Kelly and his gang.  We'll soon be learning about the Irish potato famine and we started reading Nory Ryan's Song yesterday.  I also have Feed the Children First as another resource.

I started a blog all about my reading, come and visit it's http://fondofbooks.blogspot.com

We're heading to the beach in about an hour or so, we try to get there at least once a week.

That's it for now!
