• Mar. 12, 2008 - China and nature studies

We did a co-op today.  We studied more about China and the words they use.  We learned a few words in Chinese...including our names.

Here is a closer look:

Then we studied about rocks and minerals.  We had a box and all the names, we had to sort the rocks and put them in their proper place.

And we studied a bit more about the qualities of gems, rocks and minerals:

I can't wait until it warms up so we can do some nature walks and collect flowers, plants, butterflies, bugs, and rocks.  But today, we did some stuff inside.  It was a lot of fun!

That's his first attempt. My husband has been talking to the boys about the poetry of the lyrics they listen to, but this is his first attempt at actually writing. I wouldn't say we're a LITERARY family - we're very well read, but we read history more than creative things like poetry.

This story of Moses is one that he's intimately involved in - so I think writing it was easy because he knows Moses so well. I don't thing writing a poem about spring, or about the delicacy of a rose.. would flow as easily.. I've yet to see him write with strong descriptives and imagery.. but he's a boy.. he's into journalism.. and cars and horses and computer games.. we'll have to see where he goes with his writing. He's one of those natural students - everything seems to come easy to him..

Thanks for the comments, he'll be glad to know someone read it.

I love all your kids' names in Chinese. How cool is that. Certainly something to hold on to.

The rocks and mineral charts, great job too!

I hope spring arrives soon for you. Here in CO it has, we have great weather like that.

Bless you and thanks for stopping by!

About your comment: I don't think I would ever "miss" the news. Have you seen the news coming out of New York lately? Yikes!

Peace and Laughter,
Cristina

In answer to your question about how to make Easter more spiritual:

I tried that for many years. We did the Resurrection Eggs and the Resurrection cookies, etc.

Eventually, as I learned the origins of Easter we just eliminated it altogether.

My children still get a new Spring/Summer outfit because they usually need one for church. Likewise, they get a new Winter/Fall church outfit around September or October each year.

We treat Easter Sunday pretty much like every other Sunday and mark the calendar for Passover instead!
It is so meaningful and beautiful!!! AND, it was commanded as a lasting ordinance... not just the communion part of it! It ALL points to Jesus!!!

About Me

I am new to this blogging thing, so you'll have to put up with my inexperience. I am a homeschool mom of 5 (for the last 10 years). I love poetry (reading and writing), oil painting, water colors, cooking and scrapbooking. I love science fiction, and enjoy the mountains in the summer and fall. We enjoy bug collecting, rock collecting, and plant pressing. We love our nature notebooks, and our nature walks. I look forward to learning from you all. I love Charlotte Mason, be we use in conjunction with other forms of learning. We are flexible. LOL
