• Feb. 25, 2009 - Charlotte Mason Nature journaling

Today was rather warm, so even though we have had colds we put on our flip flops and went for a walk by the river.

We took our nature journals and we all looked for signs of spring.  I ask the kids questions about plants/rocks we find and if they can answer them they get a prize.  I like them to know if the plants are edible or not, and what they are good for.  I also quiz them on birds and see if they can tell me what certain birds are.  It's like a game with us.

Here are our pictures from our day.

Here we are setting out.

And feeding the ducks...

Yes, he does have his stuffed "Moosie" on his head.  lol  He carries that thing everywhere!

I think this is a hawk we saw...he was HUGE!  My husband said he thought it might be an eagle, but it looks like the hawks in my bird books.

Here we are working on our nature journals.  I am letting my 8yos do some narration about his bee's nest he found and painted.

Here are our paintings.  My 8yo son's painting of his bee's nest is on the left, mine is in the middle of a dandilion we found (I showed the different stages) and my 10yo son's is of a clover he found on the right.  As you can see, while we may love to paint we are really not talented.  lol

That is awesome that you are able to take a nature walk in nice weather (it's frigid around here) but also that you take the time to enjoy the nice weather and God's creation with your children. How totally wonderful. I love your nature journal.

Your husband is right, Debbie, it isn't a hawk, but a young bald eagle. The head gives it away, but the body does look like a hawk. When the bird matures, it's feathers will darken and make a more striking constrast to the white head feathers.

Now I can tell him he is right...and I'll never hear the end of it. lol

We do enjoy these walks.

I just didn't look like a bald eagle from my book. I didn't know they were different colors when younger. The thing was about as big as my 8yos. It was HUGE!

I wish I knew who wrote that last comment.

You got an awesome picture of an eagle!
I know how hard it is to tell what bird your looking at when you are in nature. I'm pretty well versed on my bird ID for my area, but sometimes you have the sun in your eyes and you can't see it well until you look at that zoomed in shot on your camera! :o)

But still, you got a picture of an eagle! How exciting is that?

Peace and Laughter,
Cristina

Looks like an interesting outing! We were at the park a couple of weeks back, and the kids saw what appeared to be a HUGE nest in one of the trees. We have hawks and other birds around, have seen Vultures, but we didn't really know what their nests would look like or whether they would be in a tree like that. Guess we need to research a little. I like the nature journals you show. I may need to get that going on with my kiddos. I think the kids would really enjoy doing them.

Blessings,
Anne-Marie

Both of my girls have had colds this week and my poor dear hubby came home not feeling well today, either! Hope you guys get to feeling better.

Oh, that dandelion makes me long for spring! Winter seems neverending.

I was sharing with someone else (who coincidently posted their nature walk pictures as the latest blog entry) that this is one facet of Charlotte Mason's approach that I don't do well. My youngest is the only one who loves being outdoors. The basics take a long time with the older two, and they have proclaimed themselves strictly indoors-types. That is, until we take a vacation; then they love touring a national park or beach! I call it the more expensive nature walk! HA HA! I'm glad your bunch could enjoy the pleasure of an ordinary trek outside. This looks like so much fun.

I always wondered about the nature journals-how to do one. Do you select just anything that you like, or is there a specific focus? Thanks for sharing.

About Me

I am new to this blogging thing, so you'll have to put up with my inexperience. I am a homeschool mom of 5 (for the last 12 years). I love poetry (reading and writing), oil painting, water colors, cooking and scrapbooking. I love science fiction, and enjoy the mountains in the summer and fall. We enjoy bug collecting, rock collecting, and plant pressing. We love our nature notebooks, and our nature walks. I look forward to learning from you all. I love Charlotte Mason, be we use in conjunction with other forms of learning. We are flexible. LOL
