A Real Princess
Once upon a time there lived a handsome dog prince who was named Chester. Every day the determined prince would search hopefully, because he had to find a sweet, joyful and smart, princess for his queen. He traveled the world, but he never found a princess that fit all of those qualities. Something was always wrong with them. He wondered continually if he would ever find a princess to his liking.
One day there was a horrible storm. The king, a Great Dane, heard desperate knocking at the city gates. The king rushed to the gates to see who was there. “What do you want?” asked the honorable king.
“I am Lady Cindy, the princess of the land of Whoa,” barked a muddy, but beautiful puppy. She howled loudly so the king could hear her through the storm. She was covered in mud and drenched with water, because she had been walking in the storm all night.
Suddenly, the queen, an elegant collie, arrived. “We’ll see if you’re a real princess,” threatened the queen. After letting her in, they slammed the gates and Prince Chester’s little castle of cards collapsed.
“Nooooo!!” When he finally got over it and looked up, he saw Princess Cindy and even though Cindy had muddy fur and was drenched with water he knew that she was most beautiful and decided to be a gentleman. “These are your servants,” explained Chester. “Lily will bring you your food, Lizzie will make your bed, Annie will do all your laundry, and last but not least, Floyd will take care of any other needs.”
“Thank you,” said Cindy shyly.
“And Floyd,” whispered Chester.
“Yes Sir?”
“Keep your eye on her,” ordered the prince quietly, so Princess Cindy couldn’t hear.
“Quite, sir,” answered Floyd calmly.
The queen put a pea under 20 mattresses and 20 feather beds. “If she can feel the pea underneath all those beds then she is a real princess,” explained the queen. When the princess went to bed she could not go to sleep. She tossed and turned, but could never get to sleep. She finally gave up trying to get into a comfortable position and stared at the ceiling all night.
“How was your slumber?” asked Prince Chester the next morning when he found her in the kitchen eating doggy food flavored ice-cream.
“Terrible, I’m covered in bruises and bumps!” grumbled Cindy. But still better than sleeping out….” The princess never got to say outside because she was interrupted by Chester jumping up and down. “Do you have to go to the bathroom… what is it then?”
“You’re a real Princess!” shouted the Prince happily. “You felt the pea!”
As soon as possible Prince Chester married the real Princess named Cindy.
