• Jan. 13, 2006 - Too much running around!

I'm still reading and learning about blogging. It's fun to see so many fellow homeschoolers!

Today we spent most of the day running to different activities. I love how much we can get done when we stay home, and I am better at keeping the house together when we stay home. So why are we always running around? Some activities seem so worthwhile, and others are things my kids really love. I wonder how much is really necessary and how much is just a waste of time and money. Sometimes I worry that if we didn't do anything, my older kids would have blank college applications--no activities, no outside interests, no recommendations.

We're going to watch Fiddler on the Roof tonight--I just love Topol in that movie! We've been watching a lot of World War II movies (we're doing year 4 of TOG/TWTM) and it gets pretty depressing after awhile. DH and I have stayed up to watch Schindler's List, Saving Private Ryan, The Thin Red Line, Enemy at the Gates and Casablanca over the past few weeks. It's hard to teach my kids about these horrors when I just cannot wrap my brain around people doing these things! With the kids under ten we're just looking at the life in the US during the war--and even that is harder than what we are used to.

OK--time to pop some popcorn!

We watched Saving Private Ryan and that made me depressed for a while. It is a heavy movie! And then you add the others, I can completely understand.

Are there any movies covering Serbia during WWII? It would be nice to write up a list of Orthodox-related resources for this period of time.

Thank you for posting on my blog..I 'm so excited to meet you. I just blogged on JenIg's question about favorite movies...I put "Fiddler on the Roof". I love the music and the setting. I think it reminds me of my family's heritage....Greek.

"Swing Kids" is a WWII movie...I just bought it at WalMart in the 2 for $11 bin, but haven't watched it. It takes place in 1939 Nazi Germany...some youth defy the authorities by dancing to swing music and struggle with personal freedom and loyalty to the Third Reich.

I sympathize with your experiences you posted. I was surprised to hear this happened in NJ. It is so hard for our children to understand. Thankfully, he has 3 friends whose parents are educated about orthodoxy or who just don't operate on the judgement level. I felt compelled to blog about orthodoxy because this has been bothering me for years, and I thought a blog would be a good way to start educating folks.

I'm so glad you posted and we have found each other on the blogsphere. I hope you don't mind, but I'd like to add you to my friends list. How old are your children...I have a DS 13 and a DD 5. We were attending the Greek Orthodox Church, but the ethnic Greeks were exhibiting behaviors we couldn't support, so we are working to start a new OCA mission church here in Greensboro, NC. I am the only cradle orthodox in our group (of about 50)...and the ony Greek that left the other church. But, I'm just not one to put up with politics...not when there are more pleasant options.

I think you'll love it here.

Its so nice to "meet" another Orthodox homeschooler. I'm a catechumen at the local OCA parish and my oldest daughter is a catechumen at a ROCOR parish (its a long story why we're not at the same parish - but it works for her so I'm happy).

I'm in a co-op that I joined before becoming at catechumen. I'm not sure what I'm going to do next year. There is one lady who I am pretty sure is Catholic, so I think they are more open than some "Christian" homeschooling co-ops.

Welcome again. Hope you post often, I love to hear about other people's homeschool experience.

Thank you for mentioning the reading list in The Well Trained Mind. I started using this approach several years ago...now we do a few things she suggested. I do use the order she suggests, use the spelling program she was recommending back then, and have finally listened to her and started dictation. But, I forgot about her reading recommendations! It does help to "talk" to others about this stuff! Thanks!
