wild (but not uncultivated) musings of a Canadian unschool mom

Well, I shall now proceed to reveal our missing
whereabouts over the last two weeks or so.... We decided to kick off
our homeschool year with a cross-Canada tour.
Okay, so it was only the western half of Canada. We had to leave
something for another year, after all. However, we did lots. We saw
Canadian dinosaur bones, orchards and vineyards. We saw the Vancouver
Aquarium (and the downtown drug problem). We saw Vancouver Island and
the Butchart Gardens, a real live castle and a forest of old-growth fir
and hemlock. We rode the ferry and saw a pod of real live, in-the-wild
killer whales in the bay, leaping through the water.
We saw relatives that we hadn't seen in years, and some I'd never seen before at all. We saw a whole different place with extremes of snow and summer all within the same political boundaries.
Pictures will be forthcoming. I promise. But for now, we only just got
home yesterday. Today was spent canning the fruit we brought back by
the caseload (yes, pears....!) and watching the cold misery of a
Manitoba autumn set in. Temperatures here are hovering near freezing,
and the skies have been morbidly grey and sulky. It has been a day to
sit inside and feel the warmth of the woodstove's first fire of the
fall. I suppose one could say that part of the prairie's charm is its
obstinacy.
Perhaps that's why I like it -- it suits my temperament quite well,
thank you. It's not the prettiest place in Canada. It might be one of
the harsher ones in the southern regions. But I'm glad to be where I am.

I am so jelous!
We have always wanted to go to Canada. I had a friend in high school that went on a road trip through Canada. She said it was wonderful. We are in Texas, so Canada must be like a whole different world! I read how you stated the temperatures were near freezing, it was 91 degrees here today! We love the cold weather, yet don't get much of it here. Oh what I would give to have real fall and winter! I can't wait to see the pics of your trip!
There's no place like home
It sounds like you had a wonderful time making memories with your kids! I can't wait to see pictures. What a long drive. I am sure you are glad to be back in your own bed.
A little to the Southeast, in Central Minnesota ~ we are still hovering around 50 during the day and dropping to near freezing at night. The leaves are beautiful. I really don't like winter, but I think this year I will be looking forward to slowing down.
Enjoy an industrious day canning ~ and welcome back to HSB. I've missed your wit!
Welcome Back.
I love that area of Canada. Being from Washington State I have traveled a lot of that area and we drove it when we moved to Alaska 3 years ago. I love Victoria and Butchart gardens and Vancouver. Of course, I went to Vancouver as a teenager and went mostly to party and shop. I know, I know... but that's what we went there for.
It sounds like you had a great trip. I can't wait to see the pictures!
