Just Listen

I walk through the house, just listening. Breakneck is ripping out a wall with gusto. Finally, finally -- he's looking forward to putting the basement stairs back in. The kids have been watching what they've dubbed "Dad TV" through an old opening we found framed into the wall.

"Is it real???"
"I don't know. It doesn't look real."
"The TV used to be here, now we've got a home theatre."

"If we went in there, we could prob'ly do a puppet show."

I listen as Banana Brain explains to the Littles not only what the Marianas Trench is (using our globe), but how to find it. "All I have to do is find Russia, then Japan... Then Mariana Trench." We'll work on adding the 'S' into the name later.

Where did they learn this stuff? I ask, and Banana Brain's not even sure herself. She just picked it up somewhere. Now she's narrating it to the others. "...And all this here is Africa."

List the continents and their major water bodies? Not if you ask them that way. However, they know more than the average child their age, and they seem addicted to information. It's a toy to them. Spazzerific jumps in with, "Hey guys, I have a challenge for you. Go to Europe and see if you can find Austria."

But they get sidetracked. "Here's Egypt!!"
"Egypt!?" exclaims Squirrelly Girlie in wonder. The real deal, like Moses and the Red Sea.

The world tour ends. They're off to other things. I feel better about my own inadequacies as a homeschool parent; the children make up for it all. It's not about me; it's about them.

That is soooooo good when that happens!

And you just catch your children being intelligent and knowledgeable and you think 'what was I worrying about'
Mind you, next minute, in the case of my children, they generally do something completely alarming, just to reassure you that your worrying isn't entirely pointless ...
