wild (but not uncultivated) musings of a Canadian unschool momHome | Archives | contact We Have a New Room! (Almost)2:02 PM - May. 4, 2007 - Add to the Wildness
We have the closest thing to a finished room we've ever had in this house! I can't tell you how pleased I am to announce this bit of trivia. Here are a few photos. Because it's so small, I can't really give a good view of any one part of it. I know it's just basic, but it's so cool to have gone from dirt floor to this. The room is Spazzerific's. He got to sleep in it for the first time last night, though we don't have his dresser moved in yet. I haven't seen him all day - I moved an old desk in there this morning, and he's been enjoying the first bit of solitude and privacy he's had in five years, outside of the bathroom (which is hit-and-miss anyway). At his request, there is a green wall. He wanted the whole thing that colour, but we thought it would be too dark. So we compromised with a dark tan for most of the walls, and green on the one with Mommy's worst drywalling work. ![]() I also need to honour the efforts of my husband. See that crown molding under the edge of the shelf? Well, my big scheme was to bolt the shelf to the bottom of the beam, which protrudes into the room slightly. This is to provide the Spazz with a place for his models where Brat Boy can't get his evil paws on them. Believe me, those shelves are already stacked.
However, the majority of our time yesterday was spent learning how to cut the correct angle on a piece of trim that mounts at 45 degrees. We also flubbed on the placement of it by not accounting for the door frame, and I soon wished I'd never bought it. SuperDave still managed to make it look decent, although he politely vetoed my crazy plan to trace the profile of the crown molding onto the door trim and cut it to a snug fit. ![]() We're done! As done as we're going to be till we get the actual bedroom room done, and this becomes an office. I nearly didn't let the kid in there, except that he's been sleeping on the couch rather than share a room with his little brother, and I was sick of him trying to chase everyone else out of "his" rec room like a territorial badger.
When we get him moved over to the next room we'll be building (the reason has to do with having a window that provides proper fire egress - he's fine for now, but not once he grows), then maybe we'll get the ceiling done. Till then, I'm just happy to get this far.
