September 2, 2009 - Free Homeschooling Resources So Your Kids Learn “How to Think”

Leadership training and education is one of several instructional strategies that help raise your children to be leaders of the future, entrepreneurs in business, elders/deacons in the church,  statesmen in the community - who do the right thing.  These are the leaders who will make a change in our society. My plan is to use home schooling curriculum so my own children will be excellent leaders of the future.

You may wonder why one child gets an education to become a leader and someone else receives training to follow. It really depends on the instructional strategies that are used in your home schooling curriculum.  A child who learns “how to think” will become the leader of tomorrow. When a young man or woman can think outside the box, when they can think on their own, and apply their knowledge to real life situations, then he or she will become the leaders of tomorrow, rising to do what is right thing.

How do you train children to think?  What homeschooling resources can you use. . . for free?

Andrew Kern, of Circe Institute, says the quality of questions you ask determines the quality of your life.  Leaders have been brought up learning to ask the right questions.  They do not simply think on literal terms; they think beyond the literal, evaluating and analyzing issues.

Asking questions of your students is free and easy, as well as extremely effective instructional strategy.  What a terrific homeschooling resource!  Questions should allow your children time to think and ponder.  Your responsibility is deciding which question are the best ones to ask and leading a discussion with your students.

When questions are asked, decisions must be made.  As your students answer questions, they develop the habit of making good decisions.  Sometimes good decisions must be made with the mentor’s guidance.  Therefore, give your students plenty of practice answering questions with you at their side.  Classics are a great place to start your questioning.

Choose a classic book on your students’ reading level.  Have them read the book daily and write down their thoughts about the book.  Once or twice a week you, as the teacher and mentor, lead a Socratic discussion.  Begin by asking simple, literal questions to give your students confidence in participating.

Once you set the stage with simple questions, start asking questions of comparison.  Compare two different characters or settings.  List the ideas on the board to generate more discussion.  Most of all, be careful that you, as the mentor, do not answer your own questions.  When there is no answer for your question, rephrase your question and wait for your students to respond.  Silence is great at allowing our children to think on their own.

Leadership training is absolutely necessary as one of today’s instructional strategies.  Questions and discussions are the beginning point of educating our children to be leaders who can think on their own.

September 2, 2009 - How to Homeschool for Life

Education is a life-long activity.  To become an excellent leader, your children must always learn new ideas and concepts.  These formidable years in your home are a wonderful and exciting time to provide a love of life-long learning.  Use these learning strategies as you discover better ways how to homeschool.

Not only does an early love of learning prepare your children for future leadership, it also prepares them for independent studies in their near future.  Those students who enjoy learning are one step ahead with studying on their own.  Since independent studies are a major goal in leadership education, you must provide the pre-requisite while your children are young.  Do you children love to learn?

Providing an environment that encourages education is the first step to building a pattern of lifetime learning.  As a way of forming that environment, your home schooling curriculum should include plenty of books, arts & crafts supplies, science kits, and educational games.  Of course, these items should be easily accessible to your children so that learning is part of playing.

A learning-friendly environment also includes time to enjoy reading, creating, playing and dreaming.  Your schedule should allow time to develop character through work, but also include time for learning.  Find a balance in your daily schedule between the development of character and a love of learning.

One of the best ways to develop a strong desire for lifetime education is reading aloud as a family.  Choose a quality classic your children will enjoy and read it aloud everyday.  In the beginning, simply read for pleasure.  Allow your children the opportunity to interact with excellent books.  Once your children see pleasure in books, you should discuss the ideas found within the story.  Not only will your children start to learn from read alouds, they will also grow in wisdom as they contemplate the questions you pose.

Building a love of learning is essential to prepare your children for life-long learning and to become wise leaders.  Your home schooling curriculum should utilize teaching techniques that encourage a love for learning.

September 1, 2009 - Why Homeschool to Develop Godly Character

Before I can develop leadership in my own children, I needed to evaluate their character.  Character is foundational to be a wise leader and that answers the question "why homeschool" in our family.  Wisdom and virtue are absolute necessities for leaders who change the world in a positive manner.  Perseverance and a healthy work ethic must be in place for your children to think and study on their own.  These must be evident in your home schooling curriculum too.

I have always wanted my children to have strong character in the Lord.  My desire to raise leaders for the future encouraged me to re-evaluate my children‚Äôs strengths and weaknesses.

Take a look at your own children and determine what should be furthered in their character development and what needs to be weeded out.  Begin to push your children to persevere in the face of adversity.  Taking small steps now with integrity, dignity, and honesty lays a foundation for adult life.

Last, but not certainly not least, is the development of wisdom.  One of the best ways to develop wisdom is to ask questions on a regular basis.  Questions about your family‚Äôs readings are a fantastic place to start.  As you ask questions and provide opportunities to think, your children start walking down the road to wisdom.  Wisdom must be cultivated and you are the perfect one to do this for your child.

October 24, 2008 - Is Raising Leaders Only for Younger Students?

Before I sign up for anything let me ask you what age you are gearing this towards? The way it is worded seems to be for younger families just beginning their homeschool journey. That is definitely not us. I have 2 boys left at home - one 11th grader and one- 8th grader......thank you.
--------------------------

Thanks for asking about our books.  My first book, Raising Leaders, Not Followers is an overview of using a leadership education approach to homeschooling.  The last part of it is geared towards younger kids (12 & younger).  My second book, Teach Your Children "How to Think" with Mentoring is geared toward older kids.  It shows parents how to mentor their children by using the Socratic method of dialogue and classic books as a basis for education.  It also encourages parents to teach their children how to think critically for themselves with a Biblical worldview in mind.

I hope this helps.  If not, leave a comment below and I'll answer it shortly.

October 11, 2008 - What Season Of Life Are You In?

Seasons of life are a reality in our lives as moms.  We come & go from one season to another.  I was reminded yesterday that even the dry seasons are followed by rain.  Are you in a dry season?  Or, are you filled to the brim, readied to be emptied in a future season?

I remember when my children were young and it seemed all I ever did was take care of their physical needs.  It was soooo tiring - changing diapers, feeding babies, wiping noses, bandaging cuts, waking at all hours of the night.  You name it, I was doing it.

It was during that time, I remembered something my mom said while I was in college.  My mom was leading a Bible study for young moms.  She was telling me all about it when she said, "I told those young moms they were in a season of life.  This season will not last forever.  Don't be so hard on yourself."

You may be past the toddler stage and on to the teenager stage.  What a stage of life?  As a mom, you exchange physical needs with emotional needs during this season.  When your 16 year old pulls out of the driveway for the first time by herself, you worry if she can really drive on her own.  When your daughter is sobbing on your bed because she doesn't have any friends, you become emotionally drained.  Or, your son doesn't ever make first string on his baseball team, you are overly concerned for him.  You are definitely in a new season of life.

All seasons of life are from God.  Yesterday we sang about all seasons of life having a reason to worship.  Whether you are feeding toddlers, driving carpool or watching your teenager become more independent, you have a reason to sing & worship God.  Say these words to yourself:

    All of my life
    In every season
    You are still God
I have a reason to sing
I have a reason to worship

If you are in a dry period of your mommy career, know that God always provides exactly what we need at the time.
This is my prayer in the desert
When all that's within me feels dry
This is my prayer in my hunger and need
My God is the God who provides

If you are in a turbulent season where everything seems to be falling down around you, lean on your faith in God.
This is my prayer in the fire
And weakness or trial or pain
There is faith proved more worth than gold
So refine me lord through the faith

If you are full to the brim, in the middle of the harvest season, enjoy it. But, be ready for God to empty you, using you in others' lives:
And this is my prayer in the harvest
    When favor and providence flow
I know I'm filled to be emptied again
The seed I receive I will sow

But, most of all remember that no matter what season of life your are in today, you have a reason to sing & worship God.  He is still God of your little universe, smack dab in the middle of your career as a mom.

July 5, 2008 - We're Headed to Texas

Steve and I are sitting on the back deck enjoying the cool crisp morning.  Actually, I'm wearing a sweatshirt because it's fairly cold this morning.

As I type this post, Chipman United Moving is loading the truck with all our belongings.  On Wednesday & Thursday, a crew packed our entire house into boxes...pretty amazing since we have a 4 bedroom, 2 office home.  But they finished it by 3 pm on the second day.

Our kids flew home this morning.  Grandpa will pick them up at the airport and take them home.  Steve & I are driving the car (& dog) down to Texas.  What's wrong with this picture???

We are sooo excited to move back home.  The only thing I'll really miss is the cool weather for my morning walks.  Other than that, I'm ready for Texas.

September 3, 2007 - Last Day to get Extra Free Bonus Items

Thank you to the overwhelming response to Raising Leaders, Not Followers. If you haven’t picked up your copy yet, there’s
still time before the weekly bonuses disappear tonight:
Christian Leadership for Teen & Kids

If you’re still unsure whether you should get a copy of this package for yourself, let me share a few comments I’ve received. (Remember last time I told you I’ve had lots of feedback from people who are buying the package.)

I’ve been impressed with what I’ve read so far. I have long been wanting to find the tools to mold my children into leaders themselves. They’re doing a pretty good job so far, but your suggestions are great.
Erica

****************************************

Thank you for re-releasing your leadership package this year. I read the preview copy that you sent me last year for submitting an input via email. I enjoyed it when I read it, and got a few ideas to add to what we were already doing (literature based/lifestyle of learning approach/relaxed unit studies) with our then 5 and 7 year olds. I then set my copy on the shelf to wait a few years before I read it again.

I decided to watch your webinar and listen to the call this week, just to glean some more wisdom. After checking out the bonuses, I decided to go ahead and order, because the BONUSES ALONE WERE WELL WORTH THE PACKAGE PRICE.

As I have started to go through the materials, I realize that there is DEFINITELY SOME SHIFTING I CAN DO THIS YEAR TO IMPROVE in a few areas. The Lord was already leading us to focus on some character issues, so it was very encouraging and confirming to hear you speak about the importance of a good foundation in character in the early years.

The one statement you made about the goal being “contemplation”, not “productivity” is a golden nugget for me!

So, our homeschool focus for the year is now character and contemplation.

I have too many comments to put into this short email. If you still aren’t convinced that Raising Leaders is for you, go back to this page and read the comments in the pink boxes. I just added the pink boxes this morning.
Christian Leadership for Teen & Kids

I didn’t have time to add all the comments, but those ought to give you a great idea of the response I received recently.

Enjoy the rest of your Labor Day holiday :-) I’m off for a walk and some last-minute planning for our first day of school tomorrow!.

Blessings,
Kerry Beck

ps. The 4 Weekly Bonuses disappear at midnight (eastern) tonight - Monday, Sept 3, 2007. Today is the last day to receive those bonuses, so go here right now and get your copy. Remember what Maridel said, “the bonuses alone were well worth the package price.”

August 23, 2007 - Why is Raising Leaders an Ebook?

One concern I have heard from homeschool moms is why am I releasing these books.  Why not print them as paperbacks?

This is such an important issue that I covered it on my Start School Webinar.

If you heard my workshop on Tuesday night, you heard me address this very issue! I really want to print these in a real book format. But, there are a few drawbacks for homeschoolers if I do this.

1. Printed books take awhile to get to you…by the time we do all the prep work, send them to the printer and print. I can’t wait that long to get this information to you.

2. Printed books will be much more expensive if I print them right now. When you do a short run print of books, the cost is much higher per book (unlike books by big printing companies - Penguin Putnam, Random House, etc). The cost of your ink & paper will be much less than the total cost of printed books at this time.

3. The entire package will be much more expensive, with all the bonuses I have for your - audio workshops, transcripts of the workshops, bonus books. Making physical products is quite expensive.

4. I can send you an update without charging you for a new book.  That’s what is happening tomorrow.  Everyone who has already bought Raising Leaders, Not Followers will receive the updated editions.  It’s a win-win situation.

I want to be fair with your pocketbook. I know it is expensive to raise children and educate them at home. I truly believe the value of this Leadership Package will far outweigh the price.

One Tip
: When I print ebooks, it takes very little of my time. I put the paper in the printer. I find the file on my computer and tell it to print. I walk away and do something with my children. When I return, voila, the book is printed. Only a few minutes used. When my husband reads aloud to our family, I hole-punch those pages and put them in a binder. (Or one of my children volunteer to hole-punch)

Multi-Tasking is wonderful because my time is very valuable, too!!!

Thanks for bringing up this issue.

Kerry

August 16, 2007 - Start School Right This Year

Summer is coming to a close and most families are getting ready for school to start.  Our family is taking one last weekend trip before my son’s football practice starts on Monday.  We are headed to Seattle to pick up my daughter who has been working at a Christian camp since the first of July.

Then we are headed for a stop at the Olympic Rainforest and over to Victoria, British Columbia.  I still remember my parents taking us to Victoria for a few days.  On the way home, we’ll take in a Seattle Mariners’ baseball game.

Once we get home, I’ll start cleaning my school desk…what a job!  We homeschool from Labor Day to Memorial Day, so I have a few weeks to get ready.

I know many of you start much sooner, so I want to give you a couple of tips to start the school year right.

1.  Do something FUN on the first day of school.  Many of you know we have ice cream for breakfast on the first day of school each year.  For all you health nuts (including myself…I even grind my own flax seeds now), one meal of ice cream isn’t going to hurt anyone.  AND…it will make an unforgettable memory with your children.  What are you doing for fun?

2.  Consider your style of homeschooling.  Are you following the traditional model of the public schools that simply gives your children an education designed for the poor?  Does your approach prepare your kids how to think for themselves Biblically?

What in the world am I talking about?  I’ve explained it in a short Report I prepared especially for you.  Right now, you can get the report. All you have to do is go here:
Leadership Education Curriculum

NEXT, I’d like you to join me for my first webinar that will be an hour of ideas to help you get ready for the school year with the BEST way to educate your children.  You can get the details here:
Leadership Education Curriculum

Oh yeah…I almost forgot!  My Start School Right webinar is next Tuesday, August 21st
6pm Pacific
7pm Mountain
8pm Central
9pm Eastern

See you then!

Blessings,
Kerry

ps.  Please tell your friends & family about my Special Report and webinar next Tuesday, Aug 21.  Send them to this site to get everything:

August 13, 2007 - Example of Leadership Development Plan

Looking for a Leadership Development Plan is a worthy cause because there are so few leaders today. As we look at the younger generation, it is difficult to find the leaders of tomorrow. Today’s schools prepare our young people to follow: to follow their teacher, to follow their employer and to follow their leader. Following isn’t a bad thing, unless everyone becomes followers.

As you look at today’s school, it is easy to discover they are not preparing your children to think and lead. Multiple choice and true-false tests only give students an opportunity to tell back to the teacher what the teacher is thinking. More time is spent in our public & private schools to send students down the conveyor belt of education, requiring each student to do the same as the “generic” student. This does not train your children to think for themselves, but to learn specific facts and data.

The school systems do not provide opportunity for thinking and discussion which is absolutely necessary for future leaders. You must change our view of schools and education so we actually train your children to become strong leaders who make positive changes in our society.

To develop leaders, you must start at the beginning. Let me give you 3 steps of a leadership development plan

Step 1 - Character Building
A strong leader must be strong in character. Thus, you must begin your leadership development plan with character building. Character qualities such as integrity, work ethic, perseverance, courage and honesty should be established as quickly as possible. When you establish perseverance and courage in a young person, he is ready to become a leader who can weather the trials ahead. Instill strong character in a young person and you will prepare them for leadership as an adult.

Step 2 - Develop a Love of Learning
It has been said by many leadership coaches to lead you must read. Reading and learning are a natural part of every leaders’ life. For many teachers and home educators, this may be a new concept. It is more important to develop a love of learning than to pass the next standardized test. Standardized tests usually develop a “hate of learning”.

Your students should love learning and you can help by changing your approach to teaching. Spend time reading really cool books that draw your students into the lessons of the story. Treasure Island, Anne of Green Gables and Call of the Wild are some of our favorites over the years. Use games to teach concepts instead of worksheets. Take time to explain the “reason why” a child is learning a concept. When given a reason why, children are much more excited about what they are learning.

Henry Doherty said it best, “Get over the idea that only children should spend their time in study. Be a student so long as you still have something to learn, and this will mean all your life.”

Most of all, you need to be an example. When you love learning, your students will follow your example. It’s that simple.

Step 3 - Mentoring
To become well-rounded adults who are able to lead, mentoring is the best option. Mentoring should occur in two arenas: academic & real life. With academics a mentor should take their students through a process that teaches them to learn independently.

The best way to learn independently is to read, write and discuss. Students and mentors choose a book to read. Each day they keep a reading journal about what was read. On a regular basis, mentors lead a discussion about the book they are reading. Students use their notes or reading journals to guide them in their discussion. Open-ended, Socratic discussions develop deep critical thinking skills in students. The ability to think through lessons in books prepares students to think through problems as leaders.

Real life mentoring is also important as you raise leaders. During the teenage years, students should seek out opportunities to work with a mentor in the field of their choice. By doing so, they will learn invaluable skills in their area of interest and be more prepared for the future.

In summary, it is vital to develop strong character in children as they prepare to lead those around them. Equally important is continuous learning. A love of learning should be established early. Independent learning should continue through the teenage years.

Cicero stated it well. “Read at every wait; read at all hours; read within leisure; read in times of labor; read as one goes in; read as one goes out.” The task of the educated mind is, simply put: READ TO LEAD”

November 16, 2006 - Love Life or Lose It

He who loves his life will lose it, and he who hates his life in the world will keep it for eternal life.
If anyone serves Me, let him follow Me; and where I am, there My servant will be also.  if anyone serves Me, him My Father will honor.
                                                          John 12:25-27
A great reminder for our future leaders that we are training in our home.
