Sat morning update
Thank you for your prayers for our family. We woke up this morning to everyone feeling well. :-) We decided to head out to a local 4th of July celebration.
Soon though, Joshua began to feel poorly (diarrhea). We then decided that I would stay home with him and the rest could go to the celebration. It ended up being a good decision because by 9:30 Joshua was throwing up. He didn't eat much for breakfast, but none of it stayed down. Poor little fellow. I started reading him a book, but after getting sick, he was just wiped out. He is sleeping now.
I emailed some with Joshua's endocrinologist yesterday. She is so wonderful!!! We have adjusted his meds in hopes that he won't keep having lows. He had another last night before bedtime. He was then high in the middle of the night (333) and fairly high this morning (over 200). I wish I knew what was going on.
If any of you reading this are dealing with Type 1, did your child go through anything like this? The stomach issues? I know some of it is viral as I've had 3 other children throw up in the last week and half. His is spaced out though. Is he just not healing or catching it again? I think that the diarrhea (I apologize if this is TMI) is not just a viral thing. I'm not sure what it is though.
I know if this continues that I will be taking him to see the ped. Just debating whether I need to do it over the week-end. Prayers for wisdom would be appreciated. It's not "urgent", but I don't want it to get to that point either, kwim?
We have managed a few fun things in the midst of this yuck. I redeemed coupons with 2 of my children yesterday and will post more and add pics later. I had hoped to do something fun with Joshua this morning, but he is just too worn out from all of this.
I hope you are having a wonderful 4th of July. I'm thankful for the many freedoms that we have in this country. I'm thankful for the men and women who have sacrificed much so that I could enjoy freedom. I'm thankful for Jesus for giving me freedom from sins. Freedom is a wonderful thing and gives us much to be thankful for each day.

Leslie, I'm sorry you had to miss the family fun. I do hope for Joshua to be better soon from the virus or whatever is causing the diarrhea, etc. That's very draining.
I'm working today, but, like you, am very thankful for our freedoms and those who serve to keep us free.

I have a Type I diabetic daughter 15. She was diagnosed when she was 9. She frequently throws up when her sugars are high...also...she suffers headaches, and becomes very moody/cranky. I would be glad to talk to you about this more on e-mail. I'll have to figure out how to give you my e-mail without the whole world seeing it. : )
I'll check this blog in a few days and get back with you.

Leslie, you may have to do some heavy duty pro-biotics ("good" gut bugs) for a while to rebalance Joshua's gut flora. One of your doctors should be able to guide you on that.

I first found your blog through researching workboxes. It is heartbreaking to read about your new challenge. I had a similar experience as my husband suddenly developed type 1 diabetes 2 years ago at the age of 33. No, he had no stomach issues, I would think it's just a bad virus. Stuff like that was going around with the kids at church here (WI), it lasted a long time. But, he did have very fluctuating numbers for the first couple of weeks as his body adjusted to the insulin. He is on Lantus and a Novolog bolus for meals. All the kids we know with T1 get a pump after a year and LOVE it.
We have a Salter Nutritional Scale, which I highly recommend. You weigh the food and there are codes that you input and it can tell you exactly how many carbs are in that food (like spaghetti or a banana). Very useful when carb counting!

I had a thought, and you can take it or leave it. A friend of mine's son has diabetes. His endo ordered a test for celiac disease as it is common with people who have diabetes. You may have already done this & somehow I missed reading about it. If so, I apologize. :) I just wanted to mention it, as symptoms of celiac are diarrhea & vomiting. HTH!

Penny Thank you for the recommendation on the pribiotics. I did talk with this dr about it and just purchased some. I appreciate the recommendation.
Christine Thank you for empathizing with us! Im sorry yall have learned to deal with this too. It has definitely been a challenge and the illness on top of the new diagnosis has just been a lot to juggle.
Our dr has already mentioned the pump as an option. Joshua doesnt like the idea of it, but I think it would help him to learn more about it. Im hoping when we go into the diabetes clinic that well learn more about it. I know it wont be something we do right away, but an option for the future.
I appreciate the recommendation on the scale too. Do you have a model that you prefer? I saw that Salter made several of them. I do want to buy one. Ive looked locally, but not found one yet and may need to order online.
Anna Thank you for suggesting the celiac screen. Its not something I would have thought of, but they did run this test while Joshua was in the hospital. Thankfully, it came back negative! Please mention things as its always good to hear what other know. I have so much yet to learn!
