Queen for a Day

To schedule or not to schedule?

The word schedule has scared me for I number of years.  It sounds so strict.  I know it doesn't have to be restrictive but that's just how I hear it.

My husband has always told me that a schedule would do me good but everytime I try one, if I don't get everything done at the exact time noted, I feel like a failure.  Lately, we have had so many distractions (Dr. appointments, sick family members, pets, friends, baby, baby, baby) that I feel like I'm getting nothing done.

So, I think a schedule would be a good thing, I just don't know how to make it actually work.

Nov. 28, 2005 - I stopped using a timed schedule...

but we have a routine instead. So whenever our morning starts (I don't wake up my kids), we start our routine. There are some things we do every day and some daily variations. This keeps us from getting into a "classroom" atmosphere where we're in the middle of something great and bing! our time is up. I do keep an eye on the clock and move on as necessary to keep from doing schooltime till dinnertime...

When we have interruptions, we get back to the next item in the routine. If we have something big like a doctor's appointment, I adjust the routine for the day, leaving something out if necessary. We sometimes take work along with us. If we're going to be sitting in a waiting room, we can do some Explode the Code. Older kids can do their own reading. Math practice can happen in the car.

It takes a long time, sometimes, to find the schedule or routine (or lack of same) that works best for each family!
