What do you consider to be poor?

Posted in Food For Thought

I was on a message board this morning and this was the question posed.  Is there a certain income level that you consider to be poor?  Is poor just a state of mind?  What does being poor mean to you?  I thought this was an interesting topic and felt like I wanted to blog this.

To me being poor is a state of mind.  It's not a money value.  There are 6 of us in the family.  We make just over $20,000 a year.  We have a house payment and the regular bills.  Are we poor?  I wouldn't say so.  We are quite rich in my opinion.  Yes sometimes money runs a little short but money is everything.   We are rich because we have Christ in our lives.  We are all healthy, for the most part, we have a house and car.  We have plenty to eat, granted we don't always like what we have but it's there.  We have a wonderful church family, lots of extended family, and plenty of good Christian Friends.  What we don't have is suffering and misery.  I know my husband loves us and is home with us every night.  We may not have all the latest greatest gadgets but who really needs all of those!!  To me they are a distraction from life!  All the stuff that is supposed to save time seems to take up more time!  You can be the richest person in the world and not have Christ.  To me that's poor.  You can have no love, no joy.  That's poor.

So tell me what's your definition of being poor.  Do you fit the definition?

I enjoyed your post. I often lose perspective in this area. We, too, live on little over 20,000 a year, but it has been such a blessing and an answer to prayer as it has helped me learn contentment, stewardship, resourcefulness, creativity, and not to mention--Faith!. I also strive to become "poor in spirit" -- the less there is of ME, the more there is of Christ. That is riches, is it not?
Blessings!
