This is my first book review and I must apologize becuase it was due on the 11th. My computer was in the shop for the past month and I had no way of getting it done. So I'm offering my most sincere apology for that! Now for the review!
Across the Wide River by Stephanie Reed
This book is about a young man named Lowry Rankin whose family is part of the underground railroad. As the story starts, Lowry's best friend- a slave- is beaten. Lowry's family then moves away. He begins to help his family get the slaves to Canada where they will be free. Lowry doesn't speak out against slavery but he is against it. As the story goes on, he helps many of the slaves to escape to freedom at the risk of his own life. Lowry is a shy young man. When it comes right down to it, will he be able to speak his mind about slavery? Or will he fade into the woodwork?
This is an excellent book to read aloud to your children. My kids are ages 4, 6, 8 and 11 and enjoyed the book. It made for some great discussion times with them about slavery and how we should treat others. We also were able to discuss standing up for what we believe in.
