The Birthday Boy

John had a birthday this weekend and I really wanted to make it special because he's having a hard time adjusting to this particular age. It isn't one of those mile marker ages or anything, but for some reason this one is really bothering him. Perhaps, it's because my daughter told him that he's over halfway to 90. Or maybe it's because she created a screensaver for him that says, "Old Fart". Today, she changed it to "Young Fart" because she thought the other might be offensive, given his age and all. This is what happens when your children have more technological prowess than you do!

I had every intention of being quite domestic and making him some really awesome food this weekend. I made the menu plan. I bought the groceries. Then you know what happened? My daughter stepped in and said, "I'll take it from here, Mom." Of course, I could have argued, but do you really think a domestically challenged woman is going to argue about someone taking over her kitchen responsibilities? Think again!

So, I was allowed to make crepes on Saturday morning before my husband left to oversee softball sign-ups. For supper we had New York Strip steaks grilled per John, real baked potatoes (as in baked in the oven, not the microwave), Sullivan's salad which is based on a salad at one of our favorite exclusive restaurtants that we rarely get to visit. It's iceberg lettuce wedges with tomatoes, hard boiled eggs, and crumbled blue cheese dressing. We also had non-alcoholic fizzy drink and chocolate cake with peanut butter icing and ice cream (cookies and cream). Actually, my daughter said the cake turned out like a giant chocolate donut with peanut butter fondant. No, I didn't make it! And in case you're wondering, I didn't eat any dessert either. And my baked potato had no butter, only some Mrs. Dash. I did, however, succumb to a few blue cheese crumbles. I'm still doing quite well on my lower cholesterol diet.

Saturday afternoon I took the birthday boy shopping for new jogging gear. He also got presents after supper which consisted mainly of plenty of Starbuck's coffee and gift cards. He is definitely set on Starbuck's for a while.

After supper we watched our latest comedy DVD purchase, Brad Stine's Wussification. Even grandma got a kick out of that one.

I think John had a good birthday, except for the wicked cold he's fighting.
