Wednesday's Walk Down Memory Lane - Childhood Memories

Posted in Memories

I hope to join Lynnette in this as often as I can, I think it is a wonderful idea!!  Please check here to read other walks down memory's lane.

So for my first post, I thought I would share something from my childhood.

I just happened to have this picture on my computer, my Opa (grandfather) had sent it to me by email a number of months ago!  Back to the picture, here I am holding my cousin and my two brothers are sitting on either side of me.  As you can see from the picture, I loved and adored babies and still do!  My Aunt always said I would make a good mommy.  Whenever we were visiting with my Uncle and Aunt, you can be sure I was holding my cousin, or taking baby for a walk in his stroller.

As for other memories from my childhood, when I was 7, we moved from the city out into the country.  We were thrilled to be out on 3/4 of an acre.  Now when I think back to it, we did a lot on that 3/4 of an acre!  We had a large garden, a small "barn" for our chickens and goats, plus a fair size pen for them.  A small orchard and lots of space to run and play.  There was a creek just across the road and down the gully from us too.

In this home, the well went dry so we lived many years without running water in the house and having to use an outhouse.  Thinking back, I now admire my mom for way we lived, I'm not sure I would have been so brave, she never complained, but just took life as it came. My brothers and I would haul water up from the creek for the animals.  Our drinking water we brought in by the pailful. We brought pails with us everywhere we went and would fill them up.  We did laundry at the local laundromat or when we did have a bit of water, we used a Hoover washing machine and before that we used a wringer washing machine.

I have many warm memories from my childhood, but how different that would have been if my parents had not been accepting of how things were.  Of course, my parents tried to have a welled drilled a number of times, but water was not found.  That area is known for the lack of water and poor wells.  Just a year or two before we moved from there, (we lived there for 13 yrs) we ended up having a well bored, so that at least we could have water trucked in and live "normally", or should I rather say, enjoy the simple pleasure of having running water in the house again.  It sure felt like luxury when we could have a shower, even if we had to be quick!

So that is my walk down memory's lane for today. Brief it may be, but I'm sure I will think of other childhood memories to share.  This is just the beginning!   I hope to join in whenever I can and share whatever may come to mind; things from my childhood, teen years, early married life to the sweet things my children have said or done.

   Memories are precious and priceless!
God is good all the time!

I think it's best to take life and work with it as it is given to us. Most likely your parents wouldn't have been able to move any sooner anyway and how much more sour your childhood would have been if those 13 years were spent complainging and groaning about all the work! A good lesson for me for sure!

I'm one that can totally appreciate a barn, a garden, goats, etc. No indoor water...well, let me just say I probably wouldn't have appreciated that BUT you even made that sound charming! :)

Thank you so much for sharing. It was a blessing to read your memories today!

Wow...sounds like an exciting life with all of its challenges. :) I certainly respect your mother for making do with what she had! I think I would go insane, but you captured a defined sense of optimism in this post that, as my momma said, made it sound charming. :)

Thanks for sharing your fun memory!

I love this idea!!! What a great memory and thanks for sharing! You know recently when I washed load after load from our stomach virus how women did without a washer in their home! I cannot imagine. I know from my experience, the happiest times in our past was when we were the poorest! God always felt close and neat to see his provisions! Thanks again.. I will join you on this memory lane!

I don't think I could've done it without running water! You should've seen the fit I threw when we were without water for a week during Hurricane Ike. I admire you and your family for being so accepting and it sounds like you have a lot of precious memories from then.

I have a niece who's like that with babies too! It was a little harder with Seth due to his medical stuff but she tried anyway.

Thanks for visiting my blog too!
