Bringing in the Harvest

Yesterday, we harvested the last of the garden.  Actually not quite, just remember that  tomorrow we need to bring in the squash.  We first went out to pull up the carrots, but the children  were getting along nicely with that, so I decided to go and dug up the remaining potato rows.  I called  N. over to help me with that.  It was ok to dig, but bending down (remember I'm 38 + weeks pregnant) to pick the potatoes was not so easy.    We didn't have a bumper crop, but we are happy with what we did find.   They were a decent size, considering how wet the garden was.

Here I am with N. helping me.

R. was taking the tops off the carrots.  We have a hamper full, but I still need to sort them.  The really small ones we will keep for our horse.  The others I hope to freeze.

Part of our onion crop.  They did well and some are quite big!

I took this picture just this evening.  It was rainy and overcast here all day, but then the sun shone through and it look so neat outside.

It almost seems hard to believe that another summer has come and gone and we are now into the fall already.

Picking Beans And More

Here is a long and overdue garden update.  The garden is in a low area, so it has been wet.  We hope to put a tile in after the garden is done, so next year our garden should be better.  The beans did well and we have lots in the freezer.  Tomatoes are looking pretty good and so is the corn.  Our pickling cukes were looking beautiful, but a blight has struck and they are dieing very quickly.  We were able to pick enough cukes for one jar and eat a number of them.  In our area, it has been really difficult to grow pickling cukes the past few years.  There is a blight and I'm not sure how to avoid getting it.  Anyway, we will try again next year!  We shall see how the rest of the garden does, one half was wetter than the other.

Here are two of my girls ready to go and pick beans.

Picking beans

Delicous beans

Our one and most likely only jar of pickles from our garden

Corn

Tomatoes

Our first zucchinni, I didn't think we were going to get any, since they are growing at the end of the graden which was really wet.

N. by one of the larger sunflowers.

He wanted to take a picture of me...

We had to put straw down some of the rows, just so that we could get in the garden without sinking in the mud!

Our youngest daughter loves to carry the baskets we use for gathing the produce from the garden.  Here she is showing me her beans.  She is such a sweetie!

So that is about it for now, I have had a busy day pickling cucumbers we purchased at a local market.  Maybe I'll blog more again tomorrow.  Right now bed sounds really good!

Blessings to you!

Gardening - First Update

We have been spending some time out in the garden lately.  After we planted it, we got busy and we haven't been there much.  My dad did do some tilling, but other than that, we were just waiting for the seeds to grow.  Things are coming along slowly, but nicely.  Today, I did some tilling and we weeded a few of the rows.  I also planted some cabbage plants and more onions.   Some pictures were from a couple of days ago and others were from today.

Today's view of the front half of the garden from the side of our front porch

S. also weeding a row of corn
(taken a couple of days ago)

Yes, that is me tilling the garden today.

A few days ago when we were at the new house all day, I did some gardening, my husband was working on electrical in the house and my dad plus our little boys were cleaning up the small pieces of stone and brick from around the house.  B. was such a big help and of course he enjoyed all the tractor rides too.

Men at work!

This picture I took today, it is the view from my new kitchen window.
The clouds looked really neat too.

You can read my first garden post here.   Today, the wind was a little cool, but it was great for working.   Just need to hill the potatoes and weed a bit more at the other end of the garden.  Then we are "done" for a little while.  I hope to then focus on the inside of the new house and prepare it for  moving in.  General cleaning needs to be done!

But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.
To him be glory both now and for ever.

Time Out In The Garden

We have started a made a new garden out by the new house.  My dad plowed up the stop and prepared it for tilling.  Just over a week ago we did the first planting and was it ever a cool day.  It felt like we were planting in April and not June!  That afternoon, we planted a row of flowers, green and yellow beans, onions tomatoes and peppers.

Tomato planting here

and here again. (tomato)

K. was watching my mom and yes, we needed coats on!

Now watering the tomaotes and peppers.
Many hands make light work.

A couple of days later, I did a bit of planting.  I got corn, pickling cukes, and more onions planted.  It was hot then.  My little helpers were with Daddy and Opa, because they were bringing in some hay from the field.  Something a little bit more exciting then working in the garden.

Now these pictures are from today.  We planted potatoes, more corn, two different types of squash, and zucchini.

Potato planting

Potatoes again

We had this frame nearby, so we covered it with a blanket to make some shade!

N. found a toad...

The garden is just about planted, tomorrow I hope to finish the planting with carrots, dill, slicing cukes, radishes, beets and kale.  The girls are also hoping to have a tiny spot to call their own.  We have also planted sunflowers through out the garden too.  Sunflowers are one of my favourite plants!    I'm looking forward to seeing how the Lord will bless us this summer.

As for things that are popping through the soil, beans, onions and the first sunflowers are coming up.  I hope to post garden updates throughout the summer and fall.

But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.
To him be glory both now and for ever.

Our Garden in July

Yesterday, we spent the afternoon in the garden.  So now I can show you some pictures of how it is looking right now.

Here we have beans, 2 rows green and 2 rows yellow, leeks and roma tomatoes, 1 zucchini plant and marigolds.  Plus some sunflowers.

Right to left: you can see a bit of the last row of potatoes (there are 5 rows total), then flowers, onions, more flowers, peppers and corn.

Bit of the corn, then peas, dill and in the bare looking area are some hills of squash.

In the shady area - 1 row of cabbages, 1 row of green beans, (planted at a later date), 2 rows of corn, (also planted at a later date) 2 rows of pickling cukes & heritage tomatoes.  Behind the tomatoes is a row of carrots & beets and peppers, then comes the squash patch.

Looking at some lady bugs, that are were on the sunflower.

Peeking over the sunflower, at least for now, it will soon be too tall for him to see over.  He will then have to peek from behind it!   I'll have to remember to get a picture of that.

Mommy and baby in the garden

Eating a carrot, can't get any fresher than that!  Dirt and all....  Carrots are not ready yet, but they do need a bit of thining, so I let the children eat some.

Picking peas
More of us picking peas...  (my mom and oldest son, you can also see baby sitting on the blanket)

Baby exploring the garden, she was on a blanket, but now that she is crawling, she  goes places.
With all of us working, we got the peas shelled in record time and then today we enjoyed them for lunch,  Yummy!   I enjoy gardening and reaping the harvest.  Such rewarding work.  We are thankful!

I'm already dreaming about our garden for next year....

Gardening

Last Tuesday, I had taken some new garden pictures.  I meant to post them, but then with the excitement of the new house, I didn't get to it, so here are a few now.  I will take new ones this week, things have grown so much since just last week.  I'll show each section too.  We are all quite happy with how the gardening is growing.

Far left to right -  tomatos, leeks, yellow beans, green beans and potatoes.
Children weeding the corn...   So far left is where the first patch of tomatos, leeks, beans, potatoes, flowers, onions, flowers and peppers, corn and then peas.

Front of garden by first patch of tomatos.

S. heard some squeaking, so she went to see what Dana (my parent's dog) had found, she thought is was just a mouse, but then she saw this baby bunny.  Much to the children's dismay, Dana quickly "took care" of the remaining baby bunnies.

Strawberry Time!

This morning we went strawberry picking!   We pick six baskets full and N. (our oldest son -5 yr) had his basket full first.  Good for him!!  We had a good time too. Where we were the sun was shinning and it was hot, but we could see that to the north of us, it was starting to rain.  We could hear the thunder!  By the time we had our baskets filled it was really dark to the north and I was just hoping we would get home in time to take the laundry off the line!  On the way home, it started to rain just as we came up to our small village, and by the time we reach home it was pouring.  We rushed inside and I then saw that my wonderful husband had taken the laundry off of the line and the girls were happy that he had also thought of Buttercup (our bunny).  He was safely in his indoor cage in the garage.  The rest of the afternoon was filled with lunch and clean up, hulling three baskets of strawberries for jam and then another one for freezing.  The remaining two we left for eating fresh.  While doing all that, I also made yogurt and had to tend to diaper changes, and a couple of toddler potty accidents.  The children worked really well together, I was surprised and happy about that!  Come evening that peacefulness had disappeared, I'm not what happened to change that!  Anyway, all is well now and quiet.  While we were busy inside about three thunderstorms passed by.  I was really thankful we had gone out this morning and not planned to go this afternoon!

Picking berries, all four are here, just count the arms...  :)

Yummy berries....

Hulling the berries...

A content baby girl....

Now our toddler had joined in too...

Mashing the berries...

Others also mashing berries...
Getting the berries ready for the freezer....  He soon tired of the job, mashing berries looked like a whole lot more fun!

Mommy checking up on the work.  :)

A picture of me, thanks to my 5 yr. old son  :)

Filling the jars...

All done and sealing, this is the first batch of jars, the rest were in the canner.

For my jams I use Pomona's Universal Pectin.  It is what my mom uses too.  With Pomona's you can use as much or a little honey or sugar and the recipe is so easy to follow.  Recipes are included for many jams/jellies with pectin.

So that was our afternoon and hopefully we can have a couple more afternoons like that before the strawberry season is done here.   It was a good day!

Just a Garden Update

This morning the children and I, minus baby (she was having her morning nap) went over to the garden and did some weeding.  The garden is looking really good and the weeds are pretty much under control.      Next week I hope to plant some more corn, I wanted some to be ready at a later date, so that we don't have to eat/freeze it all at once.  There is also a bit more space where some squash didn't come up, so maybe I can still plant some more squash and use up all the space.  It will be fun once harvest time comes, but for now we will be kept busy keeping the weeds under control and watching the garden grow.

The girls and a barn kitten we named Blackberry.

An Afternoon In The Garden

Today we were able to get a good start on planting our garden.  It was wonderful to be out and working again with the soil.  This year I'm planting a larger garden over at my parent's place.  They have a large garden plot and have not really used it the past few years, so I decided that I would like to plant there and then be able to put away most of our veggies for the winter.  I will have a small garden here at home, my kitchen garden.    My parents live about 7 mintues away, so it shouldn't be to hard to get over there and keep it weeded. ( I hope!)  Plus the children love going to Opa's and Oma's!

Here the girls are watering the tomatoes and marigolds.

Baby girl was happy for a while on the blanket.  She is always full of smiles.

Planting potatoes, I think that was their favourite thing to plant!

Our oldest taking a rest in the tree.

Our youngest son helping his Opa plant corn.

Here the children were having fun in the hayfield, they were playing hide and seek.

Baby girl holding a dandelion that big sister gave to her.

Taking a closer look...

Our toddler was so tired a supper time, that he fell right to sleep!

The garden; still a bit more to plant, but we got quite a bit done today.

So that was our afternoon/evening.  We planted Roma tomatoes, one zucchini plant, leeks, onions and spanish onions, peppers, green and yellow beans,  potatoes, corn, peas, dill and squash.  Plus a couple rows of flowers.  We will plant more corn and we need to plant carrots and cucumbers yet.  Oh, I also have a few more tomatoes and peppers to plant too, but some of those will be here in my small kitchen garden.  I think I just might feel sore tomorrow, my arms already feel it from doing some tilling.

It was a good day!  Now tomorrow, I need to get the house back into order.  After a houseful yesterday for Sabbath and then ourside most of the day today, I need to spend tomorrow getting the house back into order, it is suppose to rain, so it shouldn't be to hard to stay indoors.

Praise the Lord for this beautiful day!
