Apples, Apples, And More Apples

Posted in Homemaking
This past week we have been doing a bit of applesauce every day.  Yesterday morning, we went apple picking with friends and had a lovely time out picking apples for applesauce and apple cider.

Doesn't he look thrilled with this large apple?!

Another happy helper, although she had more fun running around then picking up apples.

Climbing the tree

My big girls picked lots of apples!

Taking time to nurse the baby.    All the fresh air must have tired the baby out, because he then sleep all afternoon yesterday, he just woke up to nurse and then went right back to sleep.

Sleeping peacefully

Our willing, yet careful helpers.

They were delighted to be able to help with this, they were very careful too.

Filling the jars....

Removing any air bubbles

And here is the pretty pink applesauce!  It is so delicious too!

The weather in my neck of the woods:

Overcast and a chance of rain, plus it is cold today!

One of my simple pleasures:

Seeing the children working with daddy
Hearing our youngest "read" stories
Feeling our unborn baby's movements - not long until we meet this new little one.  Ticker says 5 days!  I'm hoping less than that.

On my bedside table:

I know these are also the same as last week.  I just can't read very long before I fall asleep!
An Encouraging Word
TEACH Magazine
Bible
Tea Leaves -  a devotional meditations for women
Keepers At Home
Family Life

On my TV:

No TV here

On the menu for tonight:

Potatoes, squash, green beans, salad and fish or a chick pea dish.  We are keeping it simple, even though it is Thanksgiving here.

On my To Do List:

Today, my husband is home because of Thanksgiving, so we are getting lots done around the house like bringing in firewood and doing some cleaning and organizing in the basement.  Also dear hubby is planning to put in a toilet in the master bathroom this afternoon.  Yay!!
I washed the rag quilt I just finished for my husband
Do a load or two of laundry
Write a letter or two

New Recipe I tried last week:

None

In the craft basket:

One skirt left for daughter, I have been sewing skirts here when I have a chance!  Six done so far...
Culottes for girls

Looking forward to:

Meeting our new baby, it is coming closer!
Riding Cinnamon, our horse, once baby is born and I'm recovered and rested.

Homemaking Tip for this week:

Include your children, they love to feel needed.

Up coming labor and delivery of our 6th baby.  This has been really on my mind, prayers appreciated!!

Devotionals, Scripture Reading, Key Verses:

This morning when I read from Tea Leaves, it written by one of the ladies just after she had her first child.  I thought it was fitting to read that, even though I'm due with baby #6, we all know how we feel just after birth and when looking down at our baby.

Dear Lord, fill me with your peace and give me strength and courage for the labor ahead of me.
Thank you for this new baby; we are so looking forward to meeting this new little one! In your Son's name, Amen.

Praise ye the LORD. Praise, O ye servants of the LORD, praise the name of the LORD.

Blessed be the name of the LORD from this time forth and for evermore.

From the rising of the sun unto the going down of the same the LORD's name is to be praised.

The LORD is high above all nations, and his glory above the heavens.

Who is like unto the LORD our God, who dwelleth on high,

Who humbleth himself to behold the things that are in heaven, and in the earth!

 He raiseth up the poor out of the dust, and lifteth the needy out of the dunghill;

That he may set him with princes, even with the princes of his people.

He maketh the barren woman to keep house, and to be a joyful mother of children. Praise ye the LORD.

Do we remember to praise the Lord enough??

The weather in my neck of the woods:
We are enjoying a cloudy and rainy day.  We had a thunderstorm earlier this morning.  It has been an hour since I first started on this, we did a number of things between then and now, anyway, the sun is now shinning!  Still many dark clouds, but the sun is beautiful.

One of my simple pleasures:

Feeling our unborn baby kick and squirm.  I know it won't be long and I won't be pregnant anymore.  Wow, my ticker say 19 days left...  Of course is is give or take a few.

Devotionals, Scripture Reading, Key Verses:

But what things were gain to me, those I counted loss for Christ.

Yea doubtless, and I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord: for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and do count them but dung, that I may win Christ,

And be found in him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith:

That I may know him, and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, being made conformable unto his death;

If by any means I might attain unto the resurrection of the dead.

Not as though I had already attained, either were already perfect: but I follow after, if that I may apprehend that for which also I am apprehended of Christ Jesus.

Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before,

I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.

Phil. 3:7-14

That was a perfect reading for me today.  I want to remember what I am pressing towards.  The mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Jesus Christ.

May the Lord bless each of you as you press towards the mark.

The weather in my neck of the woods:
We are enjoying our first rainy day for the month of September.  We can't complain seeing it is the 21 of the month already.

One of my simple pleasures:
Hearing our youngest humming sweetly in her bed every morning after she wakes up.

On my bedside table:
TEACH Magazine
Bible
Tea Leaves -  a devotional meditations for women
A couple other magazines like NGJ, Precious Things and, sorry, can't remember the rest and I don't want to run upstairs and see.

On my TV:
No TV here

On the menu for tonight:
We enjoy leftover for lunch today.

On my To Do List:
Laundry
Check on the pears and see if any are ready for canning
Math with my oldest

New Recipe I tried last week:

In the craft basket:
Nothing at the moment, but hoping to change that.  The girls need some winter skirts.

Looking forward to:
Hearing the Wissman family sing tomorrow evening
Meeting our new baby, it is coming closer!
Riding Cinnamon, our horse, once baby is born and I'm recovered and rested.

Homemaking Tip for this week:
Enjoy homemaking!

Favorite Blog Post of the week (mine or other):
Sorry, haven't read many blogs lately...

Favorite photo from last week:

Lesson learned the past few days:

Pray about everything and not lean on our own understanding.

On my Prayer List:
Husband
Children
Extended family
Wisdom and patience for each day as I teach and train our children
Up coming labor and delivery of our 6th baby.

Devotionals, Scripture Reading, Key Verses:

Here are the verses I read in my devotional this morning.

"Behold, I have taught you statutes and judgments, even as the LORD my God commanded me, that ye should do so in the land whither ye go to possess it.

Keep therefore and do them; for this is your wisdom and your understanding in the sight of the nations, which shall hear all these statutes, and say, Surely this great nation is a wise and understanding people.

For what nation is there so great, who hath God so nigh unto them, as the LORD our God is in all things that we call upon him for?

And what nation is there so great, that hath statutes and judgments so righteous as all this law, which I set before you this day?

 Only take heed to thyself, and keep thy soul diligently, lest thou forget the things which thine eyes have seen, and lest they depart from thy heart all the days of thy life: but teach them thy sons, and thy sons' sons;

Specially the day that thou stoodest before the LORD thy God in Horeb, when the LORD said unto me, Gather me the people together, and I will make them hear my words, that they may learn to fear me all the days that they shall live upon the earth, and that they may teach their children."   Deut. 4:5-10

I then read from "Tea Leaves".  It was about building memories with your children.  Happy memories will bond our children to us and keep their hearts tender as we share Jesus and His love with them.  It is my desire that our children will have many pleasant and happy memories from now in the years to come.  I pray they remember a mama who took the time to be with them and had them first and not the house work etc...

Blessings to all of you!!

One of my simple pleasures:

The precious smile of my "baby" girl.  Hearing my 3 yr old son exclaims Yay about things that gives him pleasure, like my answers when he asks what I'm making for lunch or things like that.  He is so cute!  The joys of pregnancy.

Praise ye the LORD. I will praise the LORD with my whole heart, in the assembly of the upright, and in the congregation.
The works of the LORD are great, sought out of all them that have pleasure therein.
His work is honourable and glorious: and his righteousness endureth for ever.
He hath made his wonderful works to be remembered: the LORD is gracious and full of compassion.
He hath given meat unto them that fear him: he will ever be mindful of his covenant.
He hath shewed his people the power of his works, that he may give them the heritage of the heathen.
The works of his hands are verity and judgment; all his commandments are sure.
They stand fast for ever and ever, and are done in truth and uprightness.
He sent redemption unto his people: he hath commanded his covenant for ever: holy and reverend is his name.
The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: a good understanding have all they that do his commandments: his praise endureth for ever.  Ps. 111

Yes, let us praise the Lord with our whole hearts. He is gracious and full of compassion for us His precious children.

Strawberry Jam and Other Things

Posted in Homemaking

We have had some busy days here.

Last week we went strawberry picking twice, I turned most of them into jam, I froze some and then the rest of the berries we feasted on.  I hope to go picking at least a couple of more times this week, hopefully we can go in between the rain showers.  My goal is to make 52 jars of jam and have a few bags of yummy berries in the freezer.  Strawberry jam is the all time favourite around here!  This was the first summer that B. (3) helped pick the berries and he so enjoyed it and filled a basket almost all by himself, he let me and only me help him top the basket off.  K. (1) enjoyed eating the berries and walking down the rows near us.   The older girls were a great help, I wish now I had taken my camera out into the fields to take a few pictures, hopefully next time!  I see now I don't have pictures of my girls helping here.  On a different note, I was thinking while picking the strawberries, that this is my third summer to be pregnant during the whole summer,  this being our third baby to be due in the early fall.    I don't mind at all, just thought it was interesting.

My mom, the girls and boys hulled all the berries and then they took turns mashing them for jam.  N. and B. were such a great helpers and stayed with the job until it was all done.

Here I am stiring the jam to keep it from burning.  I used my lovely new apron that I received from a dear MOMYS friend in our last apron swap.  Guess what fruit is on the apron......  strawberries!

Cooling jars of jam....

I have laundry hanging out on the line almost every sunny day!

One day last week, we had a thunderstorm pass over and this is what the sky looked like just before the rain came down.  We found out later that a tornado touched down about 15 minutes from us and destroyed a home. Thankfully the person inside the home was unhurt.   It is rare to have tornados around here.

Anyway, a quick peek into last week.  I will do another post on our first trip to the lake this summer and fun in the sprinkler.

 Summer is a pleasant season!

Making Your Home a Haven: Drawer or closet challenge

Posted in Homemaking
Click on the above button for more details

Today's challenge was to clean out or organize a drawer or closet.  So for this challenge I choose my desk!  Not exactly a drawer or closet, but it did indeed need my attention.

Before picture...

After picture....

Does it ever feel great to sit at a tidy desk again!  Now to just keep it this way would be lovely.

Otherwise, the day was spent doing some laundry, running a few errands and then planting a bit more in the garden.  It was a good day, we have much to be thankful for.

Making Your Home a Haven: Showing thankfulness!

Posted in Homemaking
Click the above button to read Tammy's post

Today Tammy challenged us to show those around us how thankful we are for them.   We had a usual day here, but I made sure those around know I was thankful for what they had done.   I was also blessed today with a thank you card plus note from friends.  It really brightened up my day and how neat for it to  have come today!

We should always be thankful and let others know we are thankful.  It is not always easy, but this challenge gave me something to think about.  We, or at least I know I do, often get caught up with what needs doing, but do we really let others know we are thankful.  How often to we thank our heavenly Father for all the many blessings He gives us??

Praise ye the LORD. O give thanks unto the LORD; for he is good: for his mercy endureth for ever.
Ps. 106:1

It is a good thing to give thanks unto the Lord, and sing praises unto thy name, O Most High."
Ps. 92:1

We can never be too thankful.  Have you thank the Lord today?

Making Your Home a Haven: Mini-Challenges

Posted in Homemaking
Click on above button for more details.

1. Set a timer for 15 minutes and work on cleaning or organizing in an area that you dread getting started on. Just 15 minutes! After that you can stop if you want to. :)

I didn't set the timer, but I cleaned out and organized two overflowing drawers in the kitchen.  It took me about 15 minutes to do both.

Drawer 1- before picture

and after...

Drawer 2 - Before picture

My little helper vacuuming out the drawer

and after...

It did help that I packed away things I want to keep, but won't be using until we move.  The things I don't want or need are going out!

2. Do something you've been procrastinating about.

Didn't do this one....

3. Clean up or organize a pile. A pile of dishes, a pile of laundry, a pile of papers... whatever needs your attention most urgently! :)

I do have some piles, but I didn't have a chance to get to this one today.  My morning was taken up with school, cleaning out the drawers and preparing lunch.  Then husband and I were out all afternoon.

4. Spend some quality time with your family. Look into their eyes and laugh with them! Do something out of the ordinary for or with at least one of your family members. :)

If I had have been home this afternoon, I would have done more, but when cleaning out the drawers my boys saw our popsicle forms. Sorry don't know what else to call them!  So when I said yes we would make popsicles, their eyes just lite up!

Here B. is finding enough sitcks

Now he was just waiting for the orange juice to  thraw a bit.   Now they are sitting in the freezer ready to eat tomorrow!

Three of our children were allowed to go with my dad and mom to visit great Oma, they had a lovely time out.  My husband and I were left with just the oldest and youngest.  We made a visit to the library and brought some seeds for the garden and flowers for the planters on our deck.

Making Your Home A Haven: Entry

Posted in Homemaking
"Click on the above button for more details.

For this week's Making Your Home a Haven challenge, let's focus on tidying and cleaning the entrance way to our homes!"

A perfect job for today, it has been busy around here with my parents moving in with us for a little while until we can move into the new house.  The place has felt upside down since we have changed some sleeping arrangements, but all is well and this is just temporary. One big plus, our master room is just about packed up, so that is one room I won't have to worry about now.  So back to the entry, it was looking pretty cluttered as are a number of other rooms!
Before picture...

After picture and this looks so much more inviting...
Excuse the red tape around the door, we are under construction here too.

As for my routines and bedtime and wake up times, some days go well and other days not so well.   Still dealing with sick ones here, we can't seem to shake this one.  Children are down with a fever for a day or two, then feeling fine and then they have a fever again.  Having this makes its rounds with 5 children not at the same time, sure makes this drawn out.  I really hope we are on the mend now.  Now baby is sick again, she was the first one to be sick and I hope the last one now too.

Here is a quote I read recently and I thought it applied to this so well.

Don't be discouraged by your weaknesses; determine instead to build on your strengths.
Rejoice that God is at work in your life.  He created you. He is developing you.
And He is not finished with you yet!

Making Your Home a Haven :Review and Check-up

Posted in Homemaking

Click on the above button for more details

This week is our chance to re-evaluate and fine-tune.

Wake up time has not been going as I planned and hoped.  I will need to work harder on this one.  I do have an good excuse I think for this past week, since I was dealing with sick children all week which made for interrupted nights around here.

Morning Routine - not everything is getting done always.  Still need to fine tune that one. This is something I need to focus on and make and list for the fridge so that my girls know what I would like done before we sit done to school.

Evening Routine still need to be consistent, but we are working on it.

Bedtime is going quite well, I'm exhausted by 10p.m. and very ready for bed!  Like right now...

I'm still working on my attitude in regards to choosing love, it is amazing how when you think about it during the day, you see how much you need to grow in this area.  Praise the Lord for His faithfulness towards me.

This week Tammy is challenging us to set a time for waking up and getting out of bed.  This is something I need to do.   The bed is so cozy in the morning and I sometimes find it hard to get out of.  Anyway, I have been doing pretty good with getting to bed on time, so getting up will be much easier since I have had a good night's rest.  I would like to start the day at 6:00 - 6:30 am.  If I get up at this time, it will give me a few minutes to spend in quiet and prayer before the children are up and our day begins.

Making Your Home A Haven: Evening Routine

Posted in Homemaking

This week, Tammy has challenged us to make a evening routine.   We do have a basic routine we follow every evening, but not always.  With building this new house etc...  It has been easy to let things slide a bit.

Our evening routine right after supper.
1. Supper clean up and dishes done
2. Quick tidy up of living room and bedrooms
3. Jammies on
4. Evening worship
5. Bed time for children

I then have about two hours to finish up some projects, computer time or just spend time with husband. Then off to bed @ 10:00pm.

Last week's challenge
was good and I will have to admit, I have to grow more in this area!  I was really tested last Monday!  It was good though and I am still learning here.  Praise the Lord for His faithfulness and that He will finish the work that He has begun in me.    So we are still learning and growing here together as a family.  I need to revise my morning routine a bit and keep sticking to my bedtime as well.

Making Your Home A Haven: Choosing Love

Posted in Homemaking

Click on the above picture to read Tammy's post for today.

Today Tammy is challenging us to be loving to our family at all times, even when we are feeling tired and grumpy.  Yes, it is my goal to be the loving wife and mother I always dreamed I would be.  It is not always hard, but yes, I have times where it is harder to be loving and gentle towards those around me.  In those times, I need to take a few moments away from the situation and pray, then come back and deal with it in a loving manner.  Loving our families is so important.

This week I have a long list of things that need to be done, I know that I will have to make it an effort to keep loving my family even if I'm overwhelmed.   With God all things are possible and I do have a beautiful family, who will be helping me.  We will be working together, but you know how things are, the mommy is the heart of the home.

Along with this challenge I will try and continue my morning routine and our set bedtimes

I Cor. 13

Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I have become sounding brass or a clanging cymbal.
And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing.
And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, but have not love, it profits me nothing.
Love suffers long and is kind; love does not envy; love does not parade itself, is not puffed up;
Does not behave rudely, does not seek its own, is not provoked, thinks no evil;
Does not rejoice in iniquity, but rejoices in the truth;
Bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.
Love never fails. But whether there are prophecies, they will fail; whether there are tongues, they will cease; whether there is knowledge, it will vanish away.
For we know in part and we prophesy in part.
But when that which is perfect has come, then that which is in part will be done away.
When I was a child, I spoke as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child; but when I became a man, I put away childish things.
For now we see in a mirror, dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part, but then I shall know just as I also am known.
And now abide faith, hope, love, these three; but the greatest of these is love.

"I want to encourage you to try your best to be loving towards your family... even (or especially!) when you want to feel grumpy." ~quoted from Tammy's post.

Baking Bread and Other Things

Posted in Homemaking

This afternoon I finally bake bread.  I usually bake bread every week or so, but this past month had lots going on, so I ended up just buying bread instead.  But this afternoon, I decided to make bread and fresh bread smells so delicious!  My little boy likes to watch the Bosch and today he was carrying his little bunny around, so bunny had to see it too.

Such a funny grin, but a happy little boy.

I was washing dishes and our youngest came up
and stood on the stool to watch me.

While I was making the bread I was also correcting some school work and helping our oldest with some of her school work.  Earlier in the afternoon I had a midwife appointment, just to listen for the baby's heartbeat.  I had seen her a couple of weeks ago, but it was still to early to hear it.  Today, we heard it almost right away, loud and clear!  I'm so thankful and hearing that little heart beating makes pregnancy all the more real.  Such a blessing!

Other precious moment today was when my little boy, the same one in the above pictures, looked up at me so sweetly and told me that he was sad that great Opa died and that we will never see him again until Heaven.  Then he went on to tell me that Jesus is in Heaven.  So precious to hear from a little one.  I wasn't sure how much he would understand, since he is only three, but he was at the viewing and funeral and he seemed to know what was going on.  He has such a tender heart.  Which reminds me, not long ago, the four older ones stayed over night at my parent's home.  They just love doing that!  Anyway, the next day, when we saw the children again, I told him how baby was looking around the house for them.  She had been looking around the house and was crying a bit, just because I think she was lonely and wondering where her sisters and brothers were.  So little boy asked me if baby was crying when looking for him and I told him she had cried a little and he burst into tears.  He was so heart broken that his baby sister missed him.  Again that was precious.   We mothers are so blessed.

Making Your Home A Haven: Set Bedtime

Posted in Homemaking

This week Tammy is challenging us to have a set bedtime and to stay with it.  Lately I haven't been having a problem going to bed since I'm pregnant. I was going to bed as early as 8:30pm, or as soon as the children were all in bed!   I have been so tired and morning sickness was the worst in the evening.  But now that I am starting to feel somewhat better, I would still like to go to bed no later than  10:00pm.  I would really like to be able to get up earlier!  My goal is to be in bed between  9:30 and 10:00pm.

As for my morning routine, I hope to stick with it this week, last week was a hard week with the recent death of my dear Opa, so we were busy with the viewings and funeral etc...  Now that all is back to "normal" I hope to stick with our morning routine too.

Blessings to all of you as you make your home a haven for you and your loved ones.
