Don't let the title, "Decodable Words Versus Predictable Text" fool you.
Patrick Groff's essay very carefully gives the reader complete, discriminating details between learning to read by "sound" (a.k.a. "phonics" or "alphabetic system") and learning to read by "meaning" (a.k.a. "whole language" or "look-say' or multiple variations thereof), which are the two major reading instruction philosophies that continue to war with each other.
Every parent should read this article, once, twice, or as many times as it takes to fully understand the difference between the two. Your child's future reading proficiency and your child’s love of the written word might well depend upon how well you understand this controversy and how pure your reading instruction methods really are.
