Bah Humbug...why you won't find christmas here

Posted in Family Life

Sorry folks.  You won't find any christmas stuff on my blog.  Well actually...I'm not sorry...and I don't really apologise for it either.

I've ummed and ahhed about whether to share why I've stopped celebrating this festival.  It's the kind of topic that can be fraught with high emotions.  Let me say at the start that I'm not trying to convince anyone to stop doing what they do but merely to explain why I do what I do.  What you do is your business, but since you are reading my blog I'm figuring that you're interested in reading about what I do.  Fair enough?

Here goes then:

I've come out of a religion (which will remain nameless) where we were taught to do many things that are not scriptural and are in fact the sorts of things that God tells us not to do eg. bowing down to idols, praying to people other than God etc.

When I decided to part ways, I began reading the scriptures to seek what God wanted rather than what a man-made religion told me to believe and do.   I began to notice so many things that I had done or was doing that were not in line with God's Word.  One of those was the celebration of christmas.

Christmas has a decidedly pagan origin - the tree, the partying, the date, the gift giving.

Did you know that many pagan gods celebrate their birth date on the 25th December?  It just doesn't seem right that God should have to share any day, let alone a special day with any of the following pagan gods: Tammuz, Osiris, Horus, Hercules, Dionysus, Adonis, and Mithra,  just to name a few.  This sounded alarm bells for me.

We know that Jesus' birth date was not the 25th of December..well most will concede that this is the truth...so why did the Church select this date?  Perhaps we don't want to know the answer to that!

Putting the pagan gods aside, Jesus still has to compete with "Santa" for attention at christmas.  Is Santa harmless fun?  I had always thought so.  But wasn't I lying to my own children, breaking God's rule number 9, "Thou shalt not lie".  Whoops.

But what if they knew he was just make believe.  Would it be okay then?

People say that the Santa story started with the story of St Nicholas.  Hmmm perhaps.  But on reading into it further it seemed to me that the story of Santa has a lot more in common with the customs surrounding the pagan god Odin.  Both Santa and Odin are supposed to ride horses through the air.  Odin too apparently has "helpers" to inform him of what is going on, just as Santa has his "helpers" to keep tabs on all the naughty children.  Although Odin's bag was to capture the naughty children and the Santa tale has been sanitised a little.  And children who placed their boot near the chimney, filled with carrots, straw or sugar for Odin's flying horse, were rewarded for their kindness with gifts.  Hmmm...perhaps St Nicholas' idea was not an original one at all.

This is just the beginning of the stuff you will uncover if you choose to go on the hunt yourself.

For me it was the beginning of the end of celebrating christmas.  Santa was sent packing and the tree and all the pagan decorations have not seen the light of day since.   We haven't completely purged christmas from our lifes yet as it's not as easy as it might seem.  Children are attached to the gift giving and excitement and family is even more attached to having you join in the festivities that you have always participated in.

This will be our third year of untangling ourselves from the paganism that has been allowed to creep steathily into our life.  Each year God has helped us detach ourselves a little more from christmas' stronghold.  I've left family and gift giving in His most capable hands.  It's an area where I currently can not see an easy way out of.  Perhaps the answer will be that it's not going to be easy.  But so far God has led me step by step through the process so I know He'll show me what to do next.

I know the thought of replacing the pagan meanings behind christmas is burning in your mind.  Why can't we put angels and stars on the tree?  Why can't we just celebrate the birth of Jeuss?  Why can't the tinsel represent the spider who supposedly covered the cave entrance with web to protect the holy family hiding there?  I have asked myself these questions in a yearning kind of way to wrangle back the bits of christmas I have fond recollections of.  But I remind myself of Deueronomy 12: 29-32 (NIV).

29 The LORD your God will cut off before you the nations you are about to invade and dispossess. But when you have driven them out and settled in their land, 30 and after they have been destroyed before you, be careful not to be ensnared by inquiring about their gods, saying, "How do these nations serve their gods? We will do the same." 31 You must not worship the LORD your God in their way, because in worshiping their gods, they do all kinds of detestable things the LORD hates. They even burn their sons and daughters in the fire as sacrifices to their gods. 32 See that you do all I command you; do not add to it or take away from it.

I don't believe that Jesus is the reason for the season at all.  Just as you can't stick Jesus' name on the practise of reading cyrstal balls or horoscopes and Christianise it, neither do I believe that l can stick Jesus' name on christmas and believe that  I am worshipping Him in a way that brings glory to Him.  To me the Bible seems to say that this is detestable.

So there you have it - the reason why you won't find any cutesy christmas craft or fancy decorated tree photos on my blog.  Yes you may find the odd reference to gift giving or family christmas events but with God guiding my path I know that there will be less and less of the hand-me-down pagan festivals and more and more of what God has in mind for His children.

Danger! Beware the letterbox!

Posted in Family Life

Note to self:

Always check the letterbox before putting your hand in to retrieve the mail

Thankfully I can retract my hand pretty quickly when necessary!

And yes, this is...hehe...was... a Redback Spider.

I showed both of the boys the spider too.  I wanted to make sure that they looked before retrieving in future as well.

And then I drowned the beastie in poison.

Sadly my enthusiasm for mail has been dampened today.

Crashing Grey Weekend

Posted in Family Life

Oh woe was I over this past weekend.

On Saturday morning one of our computers would not start up properly.  Hubby didn't have time for these sort of dilemmas as he was heading off to school to get some reporting done.  It's a horribly busy time of the year for school teachers. (Our school year ends in December in Australia).

After a quick check of the situation, an electrical burning smell coming from one of the hard drives indicated a failed hard drive.  There's three internal hard drives in this computer and hubby's quick glance said it was C drive.

Despite being a pain, a hard drive was ordered and collected on Hubby's way home from work.  Easy.  Fixed.

Now you have to understand.  We designed our set up so that we store nothing important, other than software applications and the normal Windowsy stuff, on that drive.  Hubby assured me that when a hard drive goes it's usually that one so it's wise not to store anything, that you wouldn't want to lose, on it.  And in the past, this has certainly been the case.  It's always C drive and the other two drives, in my mind, were safe locations.

In the evening hubby returned home with our brand spanking new hard drive and went to begin the process of formatting and reinstalling all of our software.  Painful but necessary and not the first time we've had to do it.

Within moments of beginning the process he discovered that when he had glanced at the computer in the morning he had mistaken the hard drive as C, when in fact it was F.

Now this means nothing to you, I know.  But it means the whole world to me.  F is where I store EVERYTHING.  The supposed "safe" drive.   Photos, ebooks, homeschool journals, curriculum...EVERYTHING important to a person on F drive.

What about the back up, as all wise people know that they should have a back up?!!!  Well yes, I wasn't too panicked at that point as we do have a back up.  It's one of those whizz bang external backs up that does the deed by itself everyday in the background.

But a back up system is only as good as the person setting it up.  Here in lay our problem.  Somewhere along the line there has been a communication break down.  I'm sure I would have said, "I need my photos, homeschool resources and journals backed up".  Perhaps hubby has only heard a portion of this...thankfully it was photos that he heard.  We're thinking the other issue at the time may have been the size of my homeschool resources file.  It may have been intentionally left out due to lack of space on our back up system.   The plan may have been to purchase another drive or a bigger one.  But whatever the plan was it never happened and we slipped into the content notion that our files were safe.

....Until the big crash of 09...yes it shall forever be known as this.

Bye bye almost everything.  Woe was me.  Woe woe was me!!  It's hard to fathom how much stuff has just disappeared into the depth of that clunky piece of metal.

On Saturday night I hit the net in search of a solution.  Surely it could be fixed.  And yes there are two options.  One is to replace the circuit board on it.  Seemingly easy enough IF you can find the identical board.  And I mean IDENTICAL.  Every number and detail on the hard drive has to be identical or it will not work and that's like searching for a needle in an immense haystack.  It's also hit and miss.  I tried for several hours to hunt one down but gave that up as the futile search of a desperate woman.

The other option is to pay a data recovery service who restore data for a living.  Sounds like the perfect solution.  Well the fact that they don't advertise prices on their websites worried me.  And then I found a budget service that charged $900 minimum for our sort of hard drive failure.  Hmmm...how much is my information worth??  A thousand dollars???  Oh I thought about it.  I yearned for it.  But...I resolved myself to the fact that it was gone...oh so gone.

Since then I have spent hours emailing companies who I've purchased ebooks from and asking them (feel free to refer to it as begging) to reactive download links for me.  I've only heard back from a few so far and all of them have said yes.  Currclick is BRILLIANT as their links remain without an expiry time or limit to the number of downloads (except for a handful of items).  From now on if I have a choice between Currclick and another company with the same product, Currclick gets my money!!

So where was the silver lining in my weekend.  There's always good in dark patches.  Well the photos were saved; companies have been very generous in reactivating links that expired up to two years ago; I've managed to piece together a lot of files from the old dvd/cd back ups; I got to do a thorough decluttering of all of my files and now they are nice and organised; AND for the most significant silver lining...I got my first grey hair...and guess what?  It wasn't the end of the world either.

No Trick or Treaters Please

Posted in Family Life

Am I cruel or what??

Hubby is worried we'll find the house trashed in the morning.  Isn't that vandalism??

Am I supposed to pay these children with lollies for house protection??  And paying them with lollies doesn't always promise front yard protection.  We've been egged before when the trick or treaters didn't like their selection of lollies.

Aside from the fact that it's a totally pagan festival AND not Australian!!!!

In the past I've handed out a chocolate attached to bookmarks I made with biblical verses on them but it's been increasingly on my mind to not participate at all this year.

I like having the opportunity to share God with these children but from my children's point of view, despite everything I've explained to them about the tradition, it seems like a lot fun.  Answering the door all night, costumes and excitement in the street and the lollies of course.  They look forward to Halloween for these reasons.  So from my children's point of view I'm condoning and encouraging  the activity and we're still participating even if it is in our own way.

So this year, there's a sign on our door and our porch light will be off...

It's one thing to share God's Word, and it's vital, but I think we need to be cautious about what we allow our children to see and do as part of our witnessing.  Do we take our children with us to the most unsavory places to share the Word with people.  Of course not.  There are some environments that aren't suitable for the children that God already has in His flock.   They are too impressionable.

So while sharing the Word with Trick or Treaters is a worthy notion for mature believers, we have decided that it's not a suitable situation for our children at this point.

Perhaps oun sign (which Ethan made I might add...isn't it a nice one??) should say :

Please
Call back in a few years time...
We have something we want to share with you.
