A Great Geography Board Game

Posted in Geography

We've had this game in the cupboard for ages and have never played it.  Last week we pulled it out and enjoyed our first game.

It was a great little game and perfect for the intended age group.  It has two levels of play.  The first level was just right for my little men.

Several cards are dealt to each player and the first card is your starting location.  You place your marker there and then plan the best route to your travel destinations (the remaining cards you hold).

The spinner indicates the number of spaces you can move and your second spin indicates what mode of transport you will use.  So if you need to move over an ocean you are going to need a plane or a helicopter and a boat is not going to help in your travels across land.

As the boys moved around the world map board they talked about the countries they passed through, they compared distances between players' destinations and were familiarised with the countries they had to visit.  It was such a simple game, but yet exciting for the boys (and mum) and highly educational.

From a brief read of the more advanced level it seems we'll have to wait a little while before we're ready for the next level.  It utilises cards with capital city names and iconic images and landmarks to identify various countries.  Flicking through the cards I realised that even I would have to do a little study to play the next level of the game .  Of course we could use the cards to research which countries they refer to before we began playing.  Actually that sounds like a good plan...for the future however.  At this point we're more than happy to continue playing on the first level.

So check out your cupboards and see what treasures you have hiding in there.  You could be pleasantly surprised.
