Aug. 29, 2008 - Miss Abby's first week....
Abby had a really nice first week of school! Yesterday, she actually started giving me a little 'tude, she said she thought phonics was a computer game and that's why she was so excited for it (awwww). I printed out some phonics games we could play, which we did today, and she loved that. The curriculum we use jumps right into blending, at first she didn't quite get it, but today we played a game where the letters are trains and they get closer and closer and once they are hitched you can't pause between the sounds, she got it! She sounded out "sit" and "mat" and it was SOOOO cute! We also did dictation, where I would say a vowel sound and she would listen and write down which sound it was. She really enjoyed that and did perfectly on it. She LOVES math, no argument there from her! She practiced writing numbers, making marks for the amounts, left and right, and following instructions (such as "make a line above the small square"). We got all her ballet stuff today, she looks sooooo cute and can't wait to start dance!
Noah's first day of homeschool will be Tuesday. He got to take the first few days off because of being sick. He is feeling better today, so he has all this bottled up energy he needs to get out. Very interesting, he's just been jumping around his room and acting silly, which is to be expected after having spent so many days resting. We FINALLY got his letter of acknowledgement and reciept of his homeschool evaluation that we sent in June! I actually had contacted the HSLDA about it and they said if we didn't recieve anything they would call or write a letter for me. Noah's 3rd grade curriculum looks really big, lots more work than he's used to, so I know it will be a big adjustment period for him. He's actually requested that we start Lapbooking again, so I've already started printing things out. Our history will be world history, using Usborne's Ancient World and Medieval World (and supplementing with library books). We will be learning about the Sumerians next week and making a lapbook to go along with it. I love doing the lapbooks with him, it's really a great way to help his retention of what he learns and they are great for the homeschool portfolio. We will be getting the Five In A Row election fold and learn to, he will love learning more about the elections since he "votes" every year in the kid voting booth and takes it very seriously! This year I am instituting a half hour a day of silent reading, I got Trumpet of the Swan from the library for him to start, but if he really doesn't enjoy it I won't force it since I want to instill a love of reading.
I love homeschooling! I am so happy to be back at it! Have a great Labor Day weekend and God Bless!!

I love your blog! I am using my blog also as a way to let my family see what we are doing. My mom especially does not agree with us home schooling, so maybe once she sees all the pics and stuff, she will adjust to it. I haven't started home schooling yet, because I am waiting for my curriculum to come in....UPS is supposed to be bringing it today :) We plan on starting this Monday or Tuesday. We are more than ready! Have a blessed day!

There's a free online website at www.starfall.com that you could probably use to supplement your phonics program. That way phonics CAN be a computer game... sometimes :)
