In response to http://ihavetosay.typepad.com/randi/2007/08/back-to-homesch.html Tuesday, August 7---How do you homeschool? I like to call our brand of homeschooling “3 r’s eclectic child-led unit studies hands-on-kits fly by the seat of our pants learning”. That way it includes everything that we pretty much do. I get bored easily so you’ll never see me do any one thing for the whole year. If I go for 3 months I’m doing good, ha ha. I do buy boxed curriculum (rarely) but never use it as it’s intended, I usually use it as a guide for ideas or just to know what it is so I can share it with others (I need to know everything that is out there). I do set a goal in an area and then pull things together to reach that goal based on the Josh’s interest, learning style, strengths and weaknesses. We do a semester system Sept-November (12 weeks), December off, Jan-Mar (12 weeks) and in April-May (6 weeks) we tie up loose ends. That’s not to say we don’t learn outside those times and outside of that planning but that’s the structure we follow for the “school year”. Given that structure Mondays are more traditional book work days, Tuesdays are tea time so more relaxed structure, Wednesdays are car schooling, Thursdays are independent studies and Fridays are Wild days (field trips, total child-led). So as you can see by my week a little bit of everything as I said above. My homeschool mantra is “If it’s not working STOP DOING IT immediately and try something else, if it is working KEEP DOING THAT.” I believe homeschooling gives each and every person the freedom to educate their children as they best see fit and I don’t think one way fits all (that’s called the public education system, and frankly it doesn’t work for all children either). I think we should celebrate that freedom and how we each choose to educate each and every day! |
