Literary World 2008!

So a little background to start.

As a homeschool group each year we pick a theme and do a project together that we do at home but get together at the end of the project to show off the work we've done.  The first year the topic was Science, then we did Geography and this year the topic was Literary World - choose a literary piece, any literary piece and do a project on it.

Joshua picked a series that he has been reading for a while now called Rangers Apprentice by John Flanaghan - the 5th book just came out in November.  There are actually already 9 books in the series that have been published in Australia, where the author is from, but only 5 of them have been published in North America.

Josh's project consisted of a project board with a map that he drew out as a background.  He then added author information, information about the series including all the books he's read in the series, character information, etc.  He even dressed up in character and served coffee.  The coffee is a funny thing because in the series which takes place in what most would consider medieval times the author (who loves coffee) wrote his characters to be addicted to coffee - coffee isn't something that would of been in the medieval times.  But the author said "it's my fantasy world I can do what I want" - Josh liked that!  Anyways here are a couple of pics.

Noah (and I) did our project on the author Eric Carle - I love his books because in every book you learn something!!  Noah loves his illustrations.

Some of the highlights of Noah's presentation - from the book Does a Kangaroo have a Mother? - we had a game.  In a stuffed animal kangaroo - in her pouch we had cards folded up with names of either a mother, or father, or group of different animals.  Visitors had to pull a name from the pouch and tell us which animal and whether the name referred to the male, female or group. We checked their answer on our board.

Another fun thing we did is from the book Today is Monday where you learn the days of the week. We had a plate for each day and the thing on the plate that represented that day - Monday is string beans, Tuesday is Spaghetti, Wednesday is Zoop, Thursday is Roast Beef, Friday is Fresh Fish and Saturday is Chicken (Noah dressed up as a fox and would pretend to eat his Webkin chicken) and Sunday is Ice Cream.  I don't have the really good picture of Noah eating his chicken but the gal that does have that picture when she sends it to me I'll update this entry with that picture as well.

Oh and the final favorite was Noah's seahorses.  From the book Mr. Seahorse where we found out it is the Daddy that takes are of the eggs and "gives birth" Noah did a water color acquariam with seahorses and fishes hanging from the ceiling and you could blow on it and they would swim.  That project turned out very pretty I thought - we just used water color markers on white coffee filters - sprayed them with water and then either used the filter as a background or cut the seahorse and fish images from them and then hung them with fishing line.

Well that's the highlights of Noah's project - we did 12 books in all and here are some pics of his presentation.

Oh we also served pancakes from the book Pancakes, Pancakes where we learned all the ingredients for pankcakes and where they come from.  See Noah's fox mask and his webkin chicken?

I wish I could show you some of the other kids projects but I don't want to put the kids pics on the internet without permission but they all did a GREAT job - there was 2 Eragon tables - one of the kids made up an Eragon game based on Stragego and another made a dragon egg from paper mache.  There was the Magic School Bus with a life size painted bus!  Lots and lots of really great choices and work done!  Oh and we had lots of outside visitors that came to see too which was REALLY great - the kids are most excited to share their work.

Well I'm off to pick up a birthday cake for Noah for tomorrow (he'll be 5 - sniff sniff) and then I'll rest? ha ha.
