So here is an update and some "closure" on some subjects as we are now at the end of our second semester. Josh: Josh's reading is plowing along - he is eating up books and is even now requesting some based on interests. For instance he has a renewed fascination for the Lord of the Rings so he asked me if there was any books on the history of the LOTR - basically where is all came from and what happened before. Well in fact there is a 12 volume set that I found in the Tree of Life catalogue that I can also get throught he library (yeah library). I've put the first 2 books on hold The Book of Lost Tales 1 and 2. As a last ditch writing assignment I was purusing some recent pics and found one that Josh took when he recently rebuilt 21 of his Lego Bionicles and lined them up in a battle formation. We printed the pic and I simply said "write about this picture". After a little bit of help brainingstorming off he went. The only requirment was 5 sentences with a beginning, middle and end however he "caught" the vision and is really developing quite a story line and is excited to work on it - we shall see what develops. Josh completed his Geometry in his Math. After Spring break he'll start on Statistics and Probabilty. The remaining topics are pretty simple for Josh and he is on track to finish on time. We both agreed Teaching Textbooks has been a great choice this year and we'll continue on with in next year. For Science Josh completed the remaining 9 modules however I wasn't quite sure what he retained so we are reviewing the modules together. I found a PDF file that listed the scienctists and had him take some study notes on each one. Then I had him do the module test which required a matching on scientist name with an accomplishment. He got about half of them right and with a little bit of review and discussion we worked through the rest together. I still have a few more "review/wrap up" things to go through just so that I feel happy with what he retains. Again the Apologia General Science was another good choice for us this year. Dad and Josh are talking about doing the Physical Science next year and Josh had also expressed an interest in Zoology - so we we are not sure which way we are going to go with Science next year. We'll wait and see. Josh is continuing to read about World War I in the My Story series, he's requested to watch Passchendale which I had mentioned to him would REALLY give him a good idea of what it was like in the trenches (that is what he seems fascinated with). I think we'll watch it together (maybe during spring break) and I'm sure we'll have some great discussions afterward. Along with the You Wouldn't Want to be a Series (Josh read 34 out of the 35 books in the series this year) and some other assigned reading (WWII and Great Explorers to name a couple) I really feel Josh has had a well rounded education in Geography and History. Reading seems to be "it" for Josh so I think I'll go through my lists of reading lists and just get books for next year, we'll see. Oh we also have a History Project with our homeschool group scheduled for the beginning of next year so maybe something will spark there for the year. Hockey is also done for the year - he really enjoyed the session, learned lots, improved a lot and had some great fun! And in the miscelleaneous column recently a homeschool Mom who has her own kiln did a ceramics class with the kids. Both kids did dragons and here are pictures of their completed pieces. Josh's...... and Noah's....
Even I got in the action and did a couple of coasters.
Well this turned out even way longer than I though so I'll do Noah's update on another entry and I have another entry to do on the Mad Scientist Day we just did yesterday so......
