Loving Him 4 Ever Web Log
Tuesday, January 24, 2006 - Applying God's Principle of Individuality to American History of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.-Day One

I got the book entitled HAPPY BIRTHDAY MARTING LURTHER KING by Jean Marzollo from the library.  It is a wonderfully simple biography for young children.  It does not go into a lot of detail but does give the important points about Dr. King's life and mission.

So having the foundation laid of God's Principle of Individuality with my children I could do the following with them.

PRINCIPLE:  God uses individuals to further His purposes.

Leading Idea:  God used Dr. Martin Luther King to help black people.

We reviewed the concepts of special, treasure, individual, unique from our introductory lesson on this principle...see previous post.

  1. Define PURPOSE.
  2. Discuss:
  • God creates us for a purpose(a job that He has assigned for us to do) that will glority Him.
    • I Cor 7:7-shows that God has given each of us gifts
    • I Cor 7:17-be faithful with the gift/purpose God has given you; don't try to do what someone else is assigned to do.
    • I Cor 12:18-God has given us just what He wanted us to have and placed us where He wants us to do our job(fulfill our purpose) right where we are.

(I sometimes would try to allow them to reason from the scripture...let them tell me what the scripture is saying about purpose or this person's job...then sometimes I would just explain it to them and refer back to my explanation later)

  • Why are we special to God? (My answer:  b/c we have a special purpose)
    •  Acts 19:11-shows how God used Paul to do miracles...Paul had a purpose
  • Did Dr. Martin Luther King fulfill his purpose? (Yes)
  • How? (Based on the biography the answer I was looking for was that he helped people; he helped to change laws; he told people not to be mean to each other.)
  • What were the laws he helped to change?(My children gave me answers based on the info. in the biography...black children could not go to school with white children, etc.)
  • What do the new laws say?(everyone can go to school together, can eat at the same restaurants, etc.)

She copied the Principle, Leading Idea and the summary of Psalm 4:3 in her notebook...maybe I'll try to post a picture of her notebook page..
