Thursday, February 9, 2006 - Arithmetic lesson plan

The following is what I've done re: my Arithmetic lesson plans.  I plan on implementing this as soon as I can...in between putting together the History and Literature lesson plan.  I will be using Ray's Arithmetic for our arithmetic course.  This is outlined according to Ray's Arithmetic

Rudiments of Arithmetic

  1. Counting

¨      Arithmetic was established by God; came from God(Gen 1:5)-COUNTING

¨      Arithmetic teaches us that God is infinite(Gen 13:16)- COUNTING

¨      Arithmetic teaches us the works of God(Gen 15:5)-COUNTING, PROBLEM SOLVING

¨      Arithmetic helps us to apply wisdom to our lives(Psalm 90:12)-COUNTING

¨      Arithmetic shows us God’s ability to increase(addition, multiplication, exponentiation)(Acts 6:1)-COUNTING

¨      Arithmetic shows us how much God cares for us(Matt 10:29-31)-COUNTING

  1. Order and Magnitude

¨      Counting establishes a distinction, identification and comparison in the things being counted(Gen 34:30)-ORDER AND MAGNITUDE

¨      The study and mastery of the principles of arithmetic enables us to be good stewards over what God has given us, personally and over His creation(Gen 41:49, Gen 1:28)-ORDER AND MAGNITUDE, PROBLEM SOLVING

¨      Arithmetic allows us to eliminate confusion and bring order to our lives and to creation(Exodus 39:37, Psalm 119:133, I Cor 14:40,I Cor 14:33,James 3:16)-ORDER AND MAGNITUDE

  1. Representation
  2. Problem Solving

¨      Arithmetic teaches us the works of God(Gen 15:5)-COUNTING, PROBLEM SOLVING

¨      The study and mastery of the principles of arithmetic enables us to be good stewards over what God has given us, personally and over His creation(Gen 41:49, Gen 1:28)-ORDER AND MAGNITUDE, PROBLEM SOLVING

¨      The study and mastery of the principles of arithmetic enables us to have fair trade dealings(Lev 25:15-17, Prov 20:10)-PROBLEM SOLVING

¨      Arithmetic enables us to understand and investigate God’s creation(Psalm 19)-PROBLEM SOLVING

¨      Arithmetic shows us that the unknown can be known(Acts 17:22-31)-PROBLEM SOLVING

LESSON PLAN/CURRICULUM(using Ray’s Arithmetic)

Quarters 1 and 2

  1. Definition of Arithmetic and Vocabulary

¨      Definition:

o        Arithmetic - the science of numbers, or the art of computation

o       ALL ARITHMETIC IS COUNTING

¨      Vocabulary

o       Unit – a single thing or person

o       Count – to number, to tell or name one by one

o       Operation – process

§         Addition – counting forward on the numberline

§         Multiplication – counting many additions forward on the numberline

§         Subtraction – counting backward on the numberline

§         Division – counting many subtractions backward on the numberline

  1. Biblical Origin and Purpose

¨      To know God – Psalm 19, Romans 1:20

¨      To make Him known

o       Thru dominion – Gen 1:28, Matt 18:12

o       Thru justice – Lev 19:35-36, Prov 20:10

  1. History of Arithmetic

  1. Introduce Counting Chart – see Resources

  1. Skills of Counting

¨      Meaning of Numbers – see Resources(2)

¨      Oral (by 1’s, 2’s, etc) – see Resources(2)

¨      Written

                                                               i.      Words(One, Two, Three, etc.)

                                                             ii.      The figures(0, 1, 2, 3, 4, etc)-Arabic System of Notation

1.      place value

2.      operations – process of counting – see Resources

§         Addition – counting forward on the numberline – see Resources

§         Multiplication – counting many additions forward on the numberline

§         Subtraction – counting backward on the numberline

§         Division – counting many subtractions backward on the numberline

  1.  Principle of Problem Solving

¨      Daily word problems – see Resources

Quarters 3 and 4 (along with operation drills)

1.      Categories to be Counted

¨      Individual Objects or Individual Groups – Psalm 90:12

¨      Equal Parts(Fractions) -  Gen. 14:20

¨      Units of Measure (with units of conversion) – Gen 6:15

                                                                           i.      Geometric Units

1.      line(inches, feet, yard)

2.      angle( 30 degrees, 60 degrees, 90 degrees, etc.)

                                                                         ii.      Physical Units

1.      Weight(ounces, pounds, etc)

2.      Temperature(degrees, farenheit)

                                                                        iii.      Chronological Units

1.      clock(seconds, minutes, hours, etc)

2.      calendar(days, weeks, months, years)

                                                                       iv.      Monetary Units

1.      United States money(penny, dime, nickel, quarter, etc)

These are some of the leading ideas that I will use in our lesson.

Arithmetic Principles/Leading Ideas/Lesson Plans

Principle:            Counting, God’s Principle of Individuality(COUNTING CHART)

Leading Idea:      Arithmetic came from God

Research

Gen 1:5

Reasoning

God established numbers and counting for He was the first One to count anything.

Arithmetic is used for the individual purpose of learning about the world God created.

Relate

Define counting chart

Record

Copy Principle/Leading Idea and summary of reasoning

Copy counting chart in notebook

Principle:         Arithmetic teaches us about God.(ORAL COUNTING, NUMBERLINE)

Leading Idea:  Arithmetic teaches us that God is infinite

Research

Gen 13:16

Deut 33:27

Define infinite

Reasoning

God is eternal.  He has no beginning and no end just like the numbers on the numberline.

Relating

Oral counting

Draw numberline

Record

Copy Principle/LI and reasoning

Copy numberline in notebook

Leading Idea:  Arithmetic teaches us how powerful God is…the works of God (WORD PROBLEMS)

Research

Gen 15:5

Gen 13:16

Eph 3:20

Reasoning

God is so powerful that He promised to make Abraham’s children as many as there are grains of sand or dust grains in the earth.

Relating

God promised us in Eph 3:20 that He is able to do WAY more than we could ever ask or think about.

Think of some BIG, WONDERFUL , GIGANTIC things.  God can do way more than those things we can even think of or even ask Him.

God is a “problem solver”.  Any problem we have He can solve it. (PRINCIPLE OF PROBLEM SOLVING)

Give examples of word problems.  Give examples of everyday problems that can be solved by arithmetic. (What time is it? How much does it cost? How much money do I have? How much does this weigh?  How long is this? How wide is that?)

Record

Copy P/LI and summary of reasoning/relating

Tuesday, February 14, 2006 - That is so good!
I've been blown away by what I'm reading in ACE about arithmetic. That and other subjects really interest me because I didn't get it completely in public school. I'm so hungry for the richness that I missed! Praise the Lord for redemption!
