Addison's creative writing

* a note from mom* Addison is working her way through Early Reading Comprehension in varied subject matter.  Yesterday, as I was reading through her notebook I was surprised to see the length of her creative writing exercises. I told her to share one on here, for Papa to enjoy one morning.

Write a story about a ship in the old days being wrecked off the island of Bermuda. Use details to make your story exciting.

Tom and the Dixie land

Once upon a time, there was a famous sailor named Tom who had a very well known ship named the Dixie land.

On day Tom decided he wanted to travel the seas with the Dixie land, they were gone for almost three years when one day Tom wanted to go for just a normal ride than come back and go somewhere else. But while they were on their ride Tom fell asleep for a while, it was just him and the Dixie land out there, when a storm came up.

It must have been going on for hours, but Tom was asleep until the boat heeled so far over that he fell out of his hammock and fell on the floor. That’s when Tom woke up. Almost instantly he ran from the sleeping quarters, through the Captain’s quarters, dining quarters, and finally got to the wheel of the boat so he could try to make it so she wouldn’t capsize. A huge wave came up and made Tom fly “whap” right into the wall of the ship, it knocked him unconscious so that he couldn’t help the Dixie land.

After Tom was unconscious for almost 8 hours he awoke to the sound of seagulls flying in the sky. When he got up he realized that it was not storming (He didn’t know it was not storming before because there was blankets piled up on top of him because of the storm) and looked around he knew they were lost.

There wasn’t one speck of land as far as the eye could see. But he had brought enough supplies to last for weeks so Tom sailed dead ahead (after a good meal of course. After heading straight for two days he spotted an island, he did not know it but he was at Bermuda, and he started to head for it. As he got closer he saw that there was a lot of shipwrecks right near the island. He thought that something had caused the ships to run aground. When he got really close to the island he realized that the ships had run aground on Coral reefs.

He realized to his dismay that the Dixie land had run up on a reef. He remembered hearing a funny sound before but he didn’t think that the Dixie land could have run up onto a reef. He tried to think of a way to get his beloved Dixie land off of the reef. But had could not think of anything to help her get off. There was a big wind that kept running her higher up on the reef; the Poor Dixie land was doomed.

Although Tom loved the Dixie land, he knew that if he stayed here, she would be wrecked, and he would be stuck on her. He also knew that he would run out of food and after awhile he would starve. He knew that even though he was very well known that nobody would think of looking here. After taking some victuals and saying good-bye to his beloved Dixie land he climbed into one of the life rafts and left, watching as the Dixie land was being driven further up onto the reef.

Six months later, Tom’s best friend Henry left for an adventure on his own ship the Lady of all Eagles. Tom had never set foot on another boat since that tragic day when he left the Dixie land stranded on the reef. Then one day a couple of months after Henry’s departure, Tom was out on the wharfs when he saw the Lady of all Eagles coming into the bay, when Henry got closer, Tom saw the she was towing the Dixie land behind her. And four months later, after Henrys return, he brought Tom an as good as new Dixie land.

Henry gave her back to Tom, who was overjoyed at the sight of her. He went aboard and everything was just like before. Tom was so happy and to show Henry his thanks he threw a party for him. And after a month of buying supplies he was off to explore the rest of the seas with Dixie land, he would not go near another island that had ships wrecked at it. And together Tom and the Dixie land lived happily ever after.

The End
