On Writing

On Writing

Must write. Uh-oh, my pen is running out of ink. Naturally, instead of writing on the computer I begin searching Google for cheap refills for my favorite pen: Pilot G2 (retractable gel ink rolling ball) and find, sadly, that I might as well buy the pen which in bulk is not any more expensive than the refill. BUT, to get to this point I spend . . . ahem . . a LONG time totally engrossed in this site: http://www.moleskinerie.com/ where I learn, among other things, that “Moleskine is officially pronounced mol-a-skeen-a, although it can vary.”

From there I can’t but help look at their project in which five notebooks are sent out around the world to participants who each are allowed a one page spread in which to draw or write before mailing it on to the next person. (Reminds me of Flat Stanley for grown-ups.) This leads me to a search for the favorite pen of one author - the Expensive Waterman Expert 2 - which I find on sale for a mere $29.95 plus shipping. (No, I didn’t buy it. Yes, I thought about it for a nano-second. It takes refills from the G2, my favorite pen . . . see I knew I would get back to my pen somehow.) But alas that lead me to www.43Folders.com which led me to http://del.icio.us/  which led me to http://tinyurl.com/ov2p7.

The data visual posted there just blew me away! I did not like the way the content READ: “Death and Taxes, a Visual Look at Where Your Tax Dollars Go” but I was amazed at the impact such dry information had when presented in a visual format. Check it out!

How can we help our students, ourselves, to communicate more effectively? Visual Data is certainly one key. I would encourage you to learn more about this technique and allow for opportunities to use it. From a powerful Power Point presentation to a web site to a graph in a report, visuals have an irresistible pull that the written word sometimes lacks.

  • Rats, haven’t ordered any pens yet.
  • ADD or over 50 or just waaaay too interested in everything???
  • Has it really been this long since I have blogged?
Love, Maggie

Nice to 'see' you again using your 'mighty fingers' in search for the 'mighty pen!'

"ADD or 50" LOL I know what ya mean!! I'll get on the internet for ONE thing... yet those bunny trails or shiny stuff have to distract me then I have to find my way back to that one thing... Oh, the circles we can go in! See, I was on this thing looking for some airplane stuff.... sigh... I'll get there. *snort*

Hugs,
Dianna

Thankfully there is a "Back" button on the computer in case we get distracted and forget where we started or what our original intention was. Just wish there was one here in our house that would help me when I start into a room, stop and look dumb, and think "Now what was I coming in here for?" :-)

July 19, 2006 - moleskin thingy

How interesting. I just last night ran across that term too! I was on postcrossing.com which is a postcard exchange activity. It had links to bookcrossing and this moleskin think you mentioned. How weird.

August 15, 2006 - Hi Maggie!

I want to run something past you...I would like to use J.B.'s book From Basic to Baghdad as a prize for a contest on the HomeFront. I was thinking of using it to increase our readership of the military e-Newsletter that TOS publishes. Something like, become our ___th subscriber and receive this book free. How would you feel about that and is there any thing in particular I would need to do in order to go forward with this?
Many thanks in advance,
Trish

September 25, 2006 - Death and Taxes

A really appreciate the link to Death and Taxes. Visuals are powerful. As a CPA and a former department of defense employee (I was a Cost Analyst for the Navy before kids and HSing), I found this poster fascinating. I think I'll order a copy and pour over it. It's too much to take in via a PC screen.
Thanks for sharing,
Carol
