MSG, MIGRAINES AND ME part 3

8:11 AM, Apr. 23, 2008 .. 0 comments .. Link
A year ago in April I quit eating sugar with the only
exception being Stevia which is a natural sugar that
does not spike cravings for sweets.
Since October which is when I found out my enemy is
MSG I have chosen to radically change the way I eat.
I started with a 4 day fast.  (The Miracle of Fasting by Paul G Bragg)
I have continued to fast 24 hours each week since then.
Next I started juicing vegetables.
(Fresh Vegetable & Fruit Juices by N.W. Walker D. Sc)
Basically this is what I eat.
  • raw unsalted nuts
  • an occasional egg either fried or scrambled
  • fruit
  • vegetables-steamed, raw or juiced
  • individual spices never a package of mixed flavors
  • olive or coconut oil
  • brown rice or oatmeal
  • I drink a mixture of apple cider vinegar with Stevia
  • rice milk
A simple list of what I do not eat is
  • canned or packaged food
  • bread
  • condiments
  • meat (maybe someday but not at this point)
  • white flour
  • sweets
  • dairy
Toxic Acid Crystals Make Joints Grind
Try this simple test.
Roll your head round and round.  Do you hear a grating sound?
If you do it is deposits of toxic acid crystals that are accumulating on
the uppermost bone of your spine which is the Atlas.
The Atlas is the location in my neck where my migraines start.
When this joint is inflamed or out of alignment I can not function!
Fasting helps dissolve these crystals.  By fasting 1 day a week I will have fasted 52 days in a year.

MSG attacks the thyroid causing hypothyroidism!
The past 3 years my thyroid has slowed to an occasional sputter.
Even though I was taking medication for it I continued to gain weight and I had the energy of a slug.
Since I no longer consume MSG my thyroid has started functioning again and without trying I have lost 25 pounds!  I have high hopes of getting off
the medications in the future.
I can honestly say that I feel as if I am coming alive.
Pain is receding and energy is flowing through my entire body.

This new way of living restricts me from eating out and
my list looks simple until you try to prepare a typical meal
without MSG.
Yet after having been sick for so many years it is a small trade off
to feel human again.

MSG, MIGRAINES, AND ME part 2

MSG is the abbreviation for monosodium glutamate.
This  is a food additive that is used for flavor.
It is also used as a growth enhancer for crops.
The only way to be sure you are not eating it is to buy
organic or grow your own food.
This wicked ingredient is found in almost every thing
that is canned, packaged and often times frozen.
It goes by a long list of names.  Only the bravest of companies
will actually list it by name on the label.
I recently bought some sausage that had a big label stating that
it was MSG free.  That turned out to be a partial truth.
The truth was they had not added it directly but it was added into
other ingredients!  If I had not know what to look for I would have
been under seige from it.
This is a short test to check yourself for MSG reactions.

Have you been tested for, suffer from, and found little relief from any of the following conditions?

1. Severe headache 12. Shortness of breath, chest pains, asthma 23. Slowed speech
2. Nausea, diarrhea, vomiting 13. Swelling, pain, or numbness of hands, feet, jaw 24. Chronic bronchitis-like symptoms, allergy reactions, dry cough, hoarseness or sore throat
3. Irregular heart beat or blood pressure, racing heart 14. Pain in joints or bones 25. Heavy, weak feeling in arms and legs
4. Depression or mood change, bipolar, SAD 15. Flushing or tingling in face, chest, pressure behind eyes 26. Irritable bowel or colitis
5. Abdominal pain, cramps, bloating, colitis, IBS 16. Gagging reflex or difficulty swallowing 27. Attention deficit disorder, anxiety attacks, rage, panic attacks
6. Balance problems, dizziness, or seizures, mini-strokes 17. Hyperactivity, behavioral problems 28. Neurological disorders such as Alzheimer's, fibromyalgia, MS, Parkinson's
7. Tenderness in localized areas, neck, back, etc. 18. Chronic post nasal drip 29. Pressure behind eyes or on head, neck, shoulders
8. Sleep disorders 19. Skin rash, itching, hives 30. ADD, ADHD, Rage Disorder
9. Blurred vision or difficulty breathing 20. Bloated face, dark circles under strained eyes 31. Asthma
10. Chronic fatigue or sleepiness 21. Extreme thirst or dry mouth 32. Weight problems, obesity, hypoglycemia
11. Excessive perspiring or shuddering and chills 22. Difficulty concentrating and poor memory

If any of these conditions plague you, you may be a victim of the myth that monosodium glutamate (MSG) is a safe food additive. The truth is that the average person eats much more glutamate than what is considered to be a safe and normal amount in the typical American diet. MSG is in everything from crackers and soda pop to vitamins and toothpaste.

There are some scary things on that list.

Here is another list that gives different names MSG hides behind.

Foods always contain free glutamate when these words are on the label:

MSG Gelatin Calcium Caseinate
Monosodium glutamate Hydrolyzed Vegetable Protein (HVP) Textured Protein
Monopotassium glutamate Hydrolyzed Plant Protein (HPP) Yeast Extract
Glutamate Autolyzed Plant Protein Yeast food or nutrient
Glutamic Acid Sodium Caseinate Autolyzed Yeast
Vegetable Protein Extract

Foods made with the following products often contain free glutamate.

Malted Barley (flavor) Natural Flavors, Flavors, Flavoring Modified food starch
Barley malt Reaction Flavors Rice syrup or brown rice syrup
Malt Extract or Flavoring Natural Chicken, Beef, or Pork, Flavoring "Seasonings" (Most assume this means salt, pepper, or spices and herbs, which sometimes it is.) Lipolyzed butter fat
Maltodextrin, dextrose, dextrates Soy Sauce or Extract "Low" or "No Fat" items
Caramel Flavoring (coloring) Soy Protein Corn syrup and corn syrup solids, high fructose corn syrup
Stock Soy Protein Isolate or Concentrate Citric Acid (when processed from corn)
Broth Cornstarch fructose (made from corn) Milk Powder
Bouillon Flowing Agents Dry Milk Solids
Carrageenan Wheat, rice, corn, or oat protein Protein Fortified Milk
Whey Protein or Whey Anything enriched or vitamin enriched Annatto
Whey Protein Isolate or Concentrate Protein fortified "anything" Spice
Pectin Enzyme modified "anything" Gums (guar and vegetable)
Protease Ultra-pasteurized "anything" Dough Conditioners
Protease enzymes Fermented "anything" Yeast Nutrients
Lecithin Gluten and gluten flour Protein powders: whey, soy, oat, rice (as in protein bars shakes and body building drinks)
Amino acids (as in Bragg's liquid amino acids and chelated to vitamins) Algae, phytoplankton, sea vegetable, wheat/ barley grass powders Artificial flavor (wheat extract: Senomyx)

It is a challenge to shop for safe food but I'm learning.

In part 3 I'll explain how I shop and what I actually can eat.

MSG, MIGRAINE'S AND ME part 1

For months I have been mulling this blog around in my head.
I have suffered with headaches since I was 12
and migraines for 27 years .
If you can think of it I've probably tried it in the effort
to get relief.  Chiropractors have been my best means for
help.  I know there is structural damage to the atlas which
is the very first vertebrae.  If this is out of position then I am
completely dysfunctional.
This damage came from years of gymnastics and being
bucked off of horses.
Yet my constant pain left numerous doctors baffled as to why
the pain never went away.  They were able to lessen it so I could
function but not eliminate it.
I usually woke up with a migraine even if I was "fine" when
I went to bed.  It reached the point that I dreaded bedtime because
I knew what was going to happen around 2 or 3 a.m.
A couple of years ago I went to a different chiropractor.
Dr. Y specializes in upper cervical treatment, kinesiology, and
acupuncture.  I have had "hinky" symptoms that were met with
"the look" through the years whenever I tried to describe them to
a doctor.  I have learned to just not say anything.
The first time I went to Dr. Y he started asking me
"did you know that you have such and such and etc going on?"
He started listing off the "hinky" things that I'd learned to live with
"No wonder you are so sick"!
Within a few weeks he had those things cleared from my system.
I started feeling human again.
At this point I was able/willing to start dealing with
emotional issues that were triggers to a migraine.
God has/is graciously gently taking me through some ugly
stuff that I'm learning to forgive and let go of.
Yet I was still waking up with migraines.
Thus began the search for that solution.
This past October the lurking culprit was found.
MSG!
The reason for the 2-3 a.m. attacks was that is the timing
in which MSG was in my small intestine setting off the pain.
To avoid this blog from being too long I'll post the next part of
this saga in a few days.

Captian Hook and Me

9:52 AM, Apr. 2, 2008 .. 0 comments .. Link

I have discovered that I have the same dislike for a couple
of things that are like Captain Hook.

First I hate gators of all kinds.  Just the very sight of one
in a book gives me the shivers!
When Sarah was a toddler we were watching Hook and she
was playing. We thought she wasn't paying attention but
at the end of the movie where the gator falls
over and Hook disappears she says
"He DID eat that man"!
Another thing I have in common with the Captain
is the dislike of clocks that TICK!

I'm not sure what it is about the ticking sound that
makes me nervous.  I'm always aware of what time
it is but I appreciate a silent clock.  In the movie
during the clock scene where Hook is smashing
the clocks my children are laughing at him and
commenting on how crazy he is.
I'm sitting there cheering him on
"hit the clocks, hit the clocks, all t-h-e clocks!
Hopefully that is where our similarities end.
I wonder if I'm the only person that reacts this way?

Judge sentences three men to English lessons

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. (AP) - A judge in Pennsylvania is giving three Spanish-speaking men a choice: learn English or go to jail.

The men faced prison terms for criminal conspiracy to commit robbery. But the judge says they can stay on parole if they learn to read and write English, earn their GEDs and get full-time jobs.

During a court hearing this week in which the men pleaded guilty, they needed translators. The judge, Peter Olszewski, said, "Do you think we are going to supply you with a translator all of your life?"

Attorneys for the men say they're studying the legality of the ruling, and that they haven't decided whether to appeal.

But one attorney says his client is happy. The lawyer says, "I think it's going to help him."

On the Road Again

10:20 PM, Mar. 12, 2008 .. 1 comments .. Link
I've mentioned before that I spend too much time driving.
Yesterday morning when I woke up I was thinking that I did not want to
be on the road today.  Then a strange thought went through my mind that
I was going to have car trouble.  Now I dismissed that thought because my hubby is
great about keeping my big honkin' car road worthy!
As I'm driving out of town heading for the highway my hands that are resting
on the steering wheel are vibrating like crazy.    I start praying "do I go or do I
turn around".      I remembered the thoughts of car trouble from earlier and I called my
hubby and told him what the car was doing and that I was headed to the car shop.
Originally I   was on my way  to a doctor appointment out of town and so I called them and explained  my dilemma.  They were gracious and  worked me into a later time slot.
2 1/2 hours later I have front tires on the back and new tires on the front.  My wobble
was coming from a tire that was seperating.
So I set off again and this time my car is driving smooth as silk.  I'm just humming
along when all of a sudden I see something blue about the size of a bread loaf flying
out from under the oncoming semi truck and it struck what I thought was my front
bumper and bounced into the ditch.  I was happy that it had not hit my windshield.
I later found out that it had hit my headlight knocking the side cover completely off
thus solving the mystery of what actually flew into the ditch.
Now I have 2 cables hanging out of that hole and flopping against the side of my car.
Finally we get to the city limits and there are signs along the bypass stating that an
accident is ahead and that we would have to exit and be re-routed.
So off we go on a merry detour only to be met by a second detour.
Finally 5 1/2 hours later I reach the doctor's office.
I know that I've ask you before but I am asking again.
Anyone want to go on a road trip with me??
Major Quote:  God has great dreams for you.
