Tuesday, December 11, 2007 - Relationships...God's Way - UPDATE

Posted in: Homeschool

That is the title of the course I have each of our girls do during some point in their high school years. Bug is getting ready to work on it this year so I thought I would write about it and share my resources for it and have it all nice and neat here in one spot.

The title is not an original one but comes from Barb Shelton, a dear woman I have had the pleasure of knowing for many years now. Click here for her articles on this subject. I ask my girls to read these articles as we begin the course just so we are all on the same page. I also encourage my girls through out the class that they do not have to agree with everything they read or hear on this subject but by the time they are through, they should have a clear idea of how they want to approach any future relationships they may have. While I have my opinions, I am not making a stance on courtship, dating, or any other approach. I am simply trying to get our girls to consider God's heart, plan and desires in this area by exposing them to information I never had as a young girl. We strongly encourage our girls to a lifestyle of purity and integrity.

Our oldest two have taken different approaches to relationships; probably because of their very different personalities. They are of an age (24 and 20) where they can decide (while still seeking input and guidance from us, their parents) how they want to deal with this area of their lives. Sunshine has been with her same fireman for a couple years now. They are going through some trials as they are not living in the same state...*L* matter of fact, they don't even live in the same time zone! She took a job as a flight attendant after graduating from university and he remained there. The past year has not be easy but they are working through  it.

Skippy has opted to "date" but with much parental supervision and involvement. She currently is not dating anyone.

Our personal preference is that they wait to seek relationships until they are done with their formal education. We encourage them in this regularly...well Skippy hears it all the time right now: poor thing! (She lives at home while attending college.)

Bug still thinks boys have "cooties"! *LOL* But I digress...back to the course.

Here is a list of resources we currently have and that they are required to read or listen to:

Godly Courtship - Denny Kenaston - 6 tapes

Waiting for Her Isaac - Castleberry

Of Knights and Fair Maidens - Myers

A New Attitude Toward Dating & Courtship - Harris - 1 tape

Preparing Your Children for Godly Romance - Lindvall - 1 tape

God's Plan for Finding a Mate - SM Davis (video)

Scriptural Romance - Lindvall - 3 tapes

Passion & Purity - Elliott

Quest for Love - Elliott * need to purchase

Online Articles:

Don't Let Your Daughter Send an Invitation to Her Party

Mirror, Mirror on The Wall: The Decision to Live Your Life For God's Glory

Sexual Purity

The "One Anothers" In Scripture

Do a search on google for "godly romance", "godly relationships", '"relations God's way", "purity" for other links. As I discover other resources I will continue to add them here.

Please share any that you recommend!!!

UPDATE:

Thanks for sharing this info...our day for needing such resources is coming way too fast! We know we want our kiddos better equipped in how to navigate this area of life than we were, I'll be saving this list and checking out the resources. It's always nice to see what other families that have gone before us are doing...

What a useful post. Thank you so much for sharing. I must share that as my girls are still young (8 & 6) this is heavy on my heart. I have a step-son (20) who I have to watch face many trials and heart burns do to the path he chooses to take. My husband tries to guide him and explanes the rules we have at our home and why we have them to him. He respects them and honors us by obeying them when he is with us. But because he comes from a broken home and has lived with his mother his HS years he was given total freedom at a young age. I pray that I may have wisbom with him and with my daughters as you have with your dauhters. Again thank you for sharing.

Your friend, Trina
