The Legend of Thousand Hills Farm

Spring at the Farm

What a wonderful, busy time of year!  This weekend we went and picked up a bunch of fencing that I got a great deal on.  Over 40 wood posts, some corral poles and lots and lots of boards - WOOHOOO!  Mike and the boys weren't quite as excited as I was, but I love a deal!

Yesterday I went to the store and planted their stop-sign planter for them.  That was fun.  The hardware guy just pretty much gave me free reign to plant what I wanted.  Since they're a Do-It-Best Hardware, I went with a red/orange/white/yellow color scheme.  He paid me in plants, so when I got home, the girls and I planted their little flower garden spot, and I worked in my flower garden alongside the garage.  I bought a beautiful yellow rose on Monday, but am waiting to plant it.  I think we're going to take up the sod along the south side of the house.  I would love to put in an English-style cutting garden.  I'm sure my little girls would love to have lots of flowers to pick, and I'm getting tired of looking at dandelions and thistles.  I'm hoping to get that done in the next couple of weeks, and then my lovely rose can be planted there.

Today it was rainy, so we stayed inside.  My plan was to start organizing the attic (again!), but the day has gotten away from me, and I didn't get started on it.  Maybe later yet this evening I will at least begin.  I did get a stew on and there's french bread in the oven - YUM!  Tomorrow will be lasagna.  Now that Mike is home from work, he's dragging the driveway.  He discovered a couple of weeks ago that he can use the drag on the driveway, and even out the many potholes that we have.  He got it about as good as it was going to get at that point, but has just been waiting for more rain to do it again.  It does come in handy having an ex-construction surveyor/worker for a husband!

I need to be finalizing plans for the vegetable garden, but we still have 2 or 3 weeks before we can safely plant.  I need to get some more herbs, I think my Sage may not have made it.  There are a few little leaves, but the rest of the plant looks pretty lifeless.  I'm not sure how my Thyme did over the winter either.  We need just a little more good weather before I can determine for sure.  My lavender all died, so I have to decide whether or not I'm going to try that again, or if I'm going to move on to something else.  The hardware has some Lemon Verbena, and I know that I want to plant some of that - I picked up some Chocolate Mint yesterday - very exciting!
