How I manage housework (Part 4)

Posted in Home Management

For those who think that is cruel & I am exploiting the children, it is ok. We can agree to disagree. I never learnt how to keep house - didn't have to. Mum did everything. And whatever she did, I seldom saw coz I was in school. When I got married & had to keep house, I bungled along. It was easy in the beginning coz there were only 2 of us & we were hardly home & never cooked.

Then when David came along - wow! I had to learn fast how to do everything at one go - look after the bb, clean the house & cook! Let me tell you - it was not fun.

I promised myself that my children will not have to learn the hard way like me. The earlier they learn how to manage & run a house, the easier it will be for them later on, whether they get married & have children or not.

To recap : Everyday - vacuuming. Mondays - Ironing. Tuesdays - Kitchen Stove & Sink. Fridays - Deep Cleaning.

So this is how everything (well, almost!) gets done here.

Aug. 15, 2006 - Child Servants

Posted by Gen

I cannot possibly remember the exact tender age that I was trained by my mother to do housework but my brothers and I had what we called a generational serving practice - my elder brother used to iron my clothes when I was too young to touch an iron and as I grew older, I'd do the same for my younger brother. We were all trained to vacuum, mop, dust, cook, iron, do and fold the laundry. And I must say we had great fun on mopping days when Mummy and Daddy weren't home - we'd pour soapy foamy water on the living room floor, wear plastic bags on our hands and slide all over! Childhood soon ventured into adulthood and the survival skills my mother imparted to us proved extremely useful! So let your child serve in the name of the Lord. As an older and wiser mother once told me "Serving others is an invaluable trait. Don't let anyone tell you that you're exploiting your child..."
