Dust Everywhere!

Posted in Home Management

It is amazing how dust accumulates so fast in our home. You dust today and by the end of the day, you see it coming back with a vengeance!

It really doesn't help that out of the 8 of us, 4 of us are seriously allergic to it! Our noses itch and run, eyes turn teary and skin and eve lips itch badly!!!

Q : What's the solution?
A : I have no idea!!!

So whoever can give me a solution to eliminating dust will be my hero!!!

Right now I am even contemplating getting a basic water-based vacuum cleaner to help eliminate some of the dust in the house. I know a HEPA vacuum cleaner is good too but oh my! the cost!  A friend just got an iRobot and is raving about it. Hmmm..................tempting.

So meanwhile, we are still doing it the old fashioned way - dust weekly, vacuum daily and mop as often as I can. But the question is - who's got the time to dust the books on the book shelves?!

I read that ostrich feather dusters do a good job of attracting the dust balls away from surfaces so you can just dust & then go outside and shake it off (into the neighbour's house probably! Lol!) This is in comparison to chicken feather dusters which merely spread the dust around and, in my mom's time, doubled up as the rod on us!

Well, I don't see any ostrich feather dusters available here in Singapore, which again means I have to pay an arm & a leg to but it from the US! And if all ther hype isn't true.......................

Now if I succumb and buy one, I'll let you guys know if it's any good.

For me, out of a household of 4, 2 of us allergic to dust. I just realised my son can't sleep on the floor, cos he will have itch nose the next morning.

iRobots::: for me, it will be a must-have item whe I go without domestic helper.

dusting::: I'm not for dusting. Don't know about that ostrich duster you talking about. While we don't have it here, I wipe with moist cloth. I find it more effective this way.

books::: for books that you seldom refer to, you may want to put them in a bookshelf with transparent door. Books collect PLENTY of dust.

When I stay over at my sis' place, the guest room has lots of books, both E & I sure running nose after that.

Dusting with wet cloth causes water to seep into photo frames over time lah. Not good! Also, that doesn't solve problem of dust on books.

Yes, I know bookcases with doors help BUT then I'd probably have to spend thousands of dollars to re-do my bookshelves! You saw how many books we have when you came over right? And it also means I have to throw away perfectly good conditioned bookcases away to fit in the new ones. Cannot lah!

Hence the thought of getting the ostrich feather duster :)

iRobot - I hear that it is not good after a while and that hair - esp long ones tend to get stuck in it! But having said that, your household has 1/2 the number of people in our household so probably more suitable for you :)

Dh jokes that for everything item we need to get, we need them industrial strength or size. Lol! He's been dreaming of the industrial sized waffle maker he saw at Vilage!

Jan. 14, 2008 - DUST!

Hi! I'm catching up on all your posts for the last month as it's been a crazy time for us and I didn't have much time for the computer! Which is why this comment, to a post made more than a couple of weeks ago(!), is so late - sorry!
Your problem with dust attracted my attention because I hate dust, too, and unfortunately, dusting even more! Have you heard of the Swiffer duster? Isn't it, or anything like it, available in Singapore? I use it and find it's good. If you can't get it there and would like to try one, I will bring one back for you when we come back (middle of the year or so - ya, I know it's a REALLY long time to wait, but better than never? :-)). The only problem after that is where to get the refill-dusters. They aren't really very cheap, but you can use them for a few dustings. It must be possible to order them from somewhere, but I don't know if that would make it too expensive to be a practical option.
Tell me if you'd like one, ok?
