• May. 11, 2008 - CONVENTION TIME!

Convention Time

Yes, it's that time of year!  CONVENTION!  Every year we head to Orlando for the Florida State Convention!  Last Year there were 14,000 homeschoolers who attended!  It's a time to refresh, get inspired, be encouraged and to spend our husbands hard earned money in the vendor hall.

For Homeschoolers, we start to become distracted....,  Our children and husbands find us with our noses buried in our convention catalogs.  We start to lose interest in the normal day to day conversations as we begin investigating the "117" workshops available to us!  We begin to dream, plan, plot.

In addition to the "educational" portion of the weekend.  It's also....,  GIRL TIME!

You will find 30,40 & 50 year old women sneaking through the hotel hallways at one in the morning, visiting our friends.  (sometimes in our nightgowns, but don't worry we grab our robes)  We eat out, laugh, cry and even dream together.  The one thing we don't do?  S.L.E.E.P.

Last year my friend Niki and I sat by the pool at midnight drinking hot cocoa and talking about our goals for our homes.  It is a precious forever memory I will carry with me.

This year, I am doing something I've never done before..., I am speaking!  My girlfriend Kim and I will be sharing the workshop we've done locally, "Accepting Who I Am As A Homeschooler".  We are scheduled at 9am in the Leaders Forum.  Right now I feel excitement and Peace, but I know that I will covet your prayers on the day of the event.  I'll even do the cheesy, newbie thing and buy my family the professional CD's of our talk.

The purpose of this blog entry is to share my Convention Agenda!

• May. 10, 2008 - Date!

Friday

My Scotty took me on a date Friday.

When he was training a few weeks ago, the gang went to this little restaurant in South St.Pete, called "Chattaway's"  He called me that day and said he wanted to bring "me" there.  So.., Friday after my doctors appointment he surprised me!

OH MY GOODNESS!  It was a hidden Jewel.

I cannot even tell you how quaint and peaceful the outside dining was.  It was the BEST burger I've ever had!  It's been there for years and it's hidden away.

The entranceway

I was thinking about seeing if my Salt and Light group would like to meet there one week?  We could share while we sip iced tea and have lunch?.  The umbrella's, gorgeous trees and plants, along with the waterfalls and quaint setting make you feel so relaxed and at peace.

• May. 8, 2008 - Heart of Dakota- Unit "4"

Heart Of Dakota~ Unit "4"

Heart of Dakota is a Unit Study Program for children up through the 6th grade.  The Author is writing more manuals and they will eventually go through 8th grade.  We love this program.  LOVE IT!  This is only the third time in almost 11 years I've found a curriculum that has almost no learning curve.  This along with Time4Learning is such a good fit for us!

HISTORY

This week we learned about how the Pilgrims tried to leave England and were thrown into jail, then when they tried again the men made it to the ship but before they could go back for the women and children the soldiers had already taken them into custody.  I love the review questions at the end of each story.  They serve two purposes.

1-  Helps my children pay attention because they want to get them right.

2-  I start the next day off by asking them the questions from the day before.  It's a nice icebreaker.

SCIENCE

The boys had so much fun with our science experiments this week.  Our first experiment was about transparency.  The boys had to hold up different objects to see if the light could penetrate the material. (Tin Foil, Parchment paper, Saran Wrap, Construction Paper)

Seth holding up parchment paper.

The second experiment was about how water takes on the shape of the object it's in.  The boys had to use an eye dropper to put drops on the top of a nickle.  They tried to guess how many drops it would take.  We were all WAAAAAY off!  It took "14" drops before the water broke over the sides of the nickle.

The boys getting ready to begin the dropper test

I put together an on-line photo album of all our pictures from this week:  PHOTO ALBUM

I hope you had a wonderful week!

• May. 4, 2008 - Grandma's Birthday~ Busch Gardens

Grandma's "87th" Birthday

Last Monday, Scott and I took Grandma to Busch Gardens for her 87th Birthday!  My sister Brandy and her family came along, and we had a WONDERFUL day riding rollercoasters, eating lunch, watching our children enjoy their time together!

I remember my Grandma, mom and dad taking ME to Busch Gardens when I was a little girl.  We've now come full circle.  The above picture of Brandon riding the flume really brings back those memories as I remember riding this with my Grandma when she was young and I was a little girl.

• May. 4, 2008 - Barb Mesh- Homeschool Through Highschool Conference!

Barb Mesh Conference

Barb Mesh is a veteran homeschool Mama who has successfully graduated her own children.  They have long since graduated from prestigious colleges, and are now working in their chosen fields.

Barb has such a HEART for homeschooling that she began her own business and now travels the state doing "Homeschool Highschool Seminars".

What sets Barb apart from the rest is that rather than telling you to make your school fit a traditional transcript, she teaches you how to make your transcript fit your school!  Her goal is that you can keep on doing what you've always done rather than stopping everything and going traditional at 9th grade.

Our support group, "The PPEA" hosts Barbs workshops at least once a year!  To see all the pictures please visit out album!

• May. 4, 2008 - Isabel Arrived!

Isabel Hollie McKinnon

Last Monday my friend (more like a sister) Lani gave birth her second daughter.  She and her husband Chris are good friends of ours, and amazing parents.  How blessed this little one is to come into such a loving, secure home.

I got the call early Monday morning that they were on their way to the hospital and then that night I found out they were taking her for her first C-section. (after two normal deliveries)

Lani did a GREAT job, and she and baby are home now.  Pilar and Carter are excited about their new sibling, and daddy Chris has been a HUGE help to both mommy and baby!

I love you guys and I'm so happy for you.  Just really sad that I can't be there to hold Isabel in my arms, but when you come to visit..., WATCH OUT!

Here are more PICTURES of little Isabel with family.  I had the honor of doing their baby shower while in town last January.  If you did not get to see those pictures here ya go...., BABY SHOWER PICTURES

• May. 1, 2008 - Beyond Little Hearts~ Unit Three

Unit THREE

This week we completed Unit three of "Beyond".  I absolutely ADORE this program.  My children and I are learning so much.  It feels GREAT to be off vacation and plugging along.

BIBLE

Our memory verse this week was....,

"If anyone acknowledges that Jesus is the Son Of God, God lives in him and he in God, and so we know and rely on the love God has for us"  1 John 4:15-16a

We learn this together as a family and our bible lessons revolve around our memory verse.  Something I don't remember sharing on my blog was that my sweet Seth asked Jesus into his heart last week.
About two weeks ago we he was "helping" me cook dinner () and the Lord prompted me to ask him if he had thought about asking Jesus into his heart.  It went something like this:

Mom:  "Seth, I know we've talked about how important it is to ask Jesus into your heart so that you can spend forever with Him.  I was wondering what you think about that now that your getting older?"

Seth: (embarrassed)  "I don't know I still need to think about it."

Mom: "Ok, I just want you to know that I love you and I don't ever want you to make the decision because you think you have to.  Mommy just asks because I want you to know that you can always talk to me about it."

Seth:  Nod and remains quiet while he continues chopping celery.

5 Mins Later....,

Seth:  Mama, if I "were" to pray that prayer, what would I need to say"?

Mom:  (acting very calm and trying hard not to smile)  "You would just tell Jesus that you love Him and that you know He is God and that you want Him to come and live in your heart."

That was that, and then last week while we were doing our HOD science Seth just blurted out, "Oh did I tell you that I prayed that prayer"?  It took me a second to understand what he meant.  I gave him a big hug and had him call his Daddy at work to tell him.  So this week our memory verse was very special to him.  Let me share it again,

"If anyone acknowledges that Jesus is the Son Of God, God lives in him and he in God, and so we know and rely on the love God has for us"  1 John 4:15-16a

We could personalize it.

"Since Seth has acknowledged that Jesus is the Son Of God, God lives in Him and He in God and now Seth can rely on the love God has for Him"!

Thank YOU Lord for your faithfulness.  I pray that all of my sons would not only ask you into their hearts, but that they would serve you their whole life long!

HISTORY

This week we learned about how "believers" living in England were under the law to only worship at King James church.  The boys were amazed that people would go to jail for worshipping God in their own way.  I love how the history books HOD uses really pull you into the story by bringing fact together with a good story.

ART

The art project this week was to draw a picture of a stone wall using black crayon and then using green paint make vines.  We then dipped a wadded paper towel into red paint and dabbed the vines to make "Roses".  Seth had a BALL doing this!.  See his big roses!  This art project went along with our history because our story revolved around an old "Inn" that had once been a palace and this was the wall that had been described in our history story.

SCIENCE

In Science this week we talked about Bee's and how Pollen is spread to create seeds that make more plants.  In addition to reading out of our scheduled text, I had a book about bees and wasps that we used as a supplement.

ACTIVITY

Now you may be asking yourself, what's with the plate and lemon pepper?  Well this was the FUN activity that HOD used to really help us understand the process of "Pollination"!  The boys would pretend like their hand was the bee.  It would fly through the air and land on the first flower, then fly to the second.  By the end of the activity you could see how the pollen was spread.

We took more pictures of the boys doing their activity.  To view these, go to our home WEB PAGE

I hope you had a good week and remember......, "If anyone acknowledges that Jesus IS the Son of God, God lives in him and he in God, and so we know and rely on the love God has for US!" 1 John 4:15-16a

• Apr. 25, 2008 - Week In Review!

School

It felt so good to start back to school this week.  We always take a 3-4 week break during the spring, and then school during the summer.  However, this year our 3-4 week break turned into a FIVE week vacation!

We use a WONDERFUL program called Heart Of Dakota  (it's a full unit study)

Here are pictures highlighting our week!

Colton doing his "Cheerful Cursive".

Seth, using his "A Reason For Handwriting".

Jacob has his own notebook that he scribbles in so he can feel like a big boy!

Science Experiment~ Open paper glides, balled up paper falls fast.  (In this picture it looks like the gliding paper is faster but that's just because Seth dropped his too soon, LOL!

Spelling~ All of their weekly spelling words are written on index cards.  I say the word and set it down, upside down while they spell it.  They then flip the card and check and correct their spelling.

Science~  We learned about Mammals.  Colton is our artist.  Can you tell which animal he drew?

Seth, has many gifts, art is probably not one of them (smile)  Can you tell what HE is drawing? (Leopard)

How was YOUR week?

• Apr. 20, 2008 - What I love about Time4Learning!

Our computer is being "twitchy" and I am unable to use anything that requires "FLASH".    However, because I am not having to deal with CD's and programs that can only run in my computer, I can go to the library and simply have the boys log into their accounts to do school.

I cannot WAIT to get our computer fixed and to be able to work from home, but I appreciate how easy Time4Learning is to use!

This past month I have talked with many moms who are using Time4Learning to, here in my community.  They LOVE it!  I always leave a link for anyone who wants to try the demo's for FREE!

• Apr. 19, 2008 - Catching Up!

Catching Up

My precious dad started his Chemo/radiation this week.  It has made him incredibly sleepy and he had some nausea.  Will you please pray that the Lord would sustain him physically and draw his heart spiritually?  That is always my goal.  That I would draw closer to the Lord through the pain...., "More of Him, Less of Me" John 3:30

Grandma turned "87"
Jacob showing Grams his book he made while at co-op
I told Grandma I would make anything she wanted for dinner to celebrate her birthday.  She chose stuffed Pork Chops, Sweet Potatoe Casserole and Cherry Pie.  So we had Thanksgiving in April!

Colton went to Busch Gardens with our friends the Stradley's

Calvary Chapel Children's Conference!

I led two workshops in the afternoon session called, "How To Teach Children To Memorize Scripture"  These were some of the sweetest, neatest people I've ever met.  I truly believe it is more of a blessing to serve than to receive.  The team that put this together did an AMAZING job!  (ok, they're my friends, but I would think that even if they weren't, LOL)

How was your week?

• Apr. 10, 2008 - Catching Up!

Andie's Visit

My girlfriend Andie and her family moved to Tallahassee last year.  We were so excited that they came for a visit.  I was so blown away by her and her sweet husband Terry.  They have been exercising and dieting and looked GREAT!

We had so much FUN!

Fun Day Out

Monday my friends Mary D,Monica G, myself and our kids went to the library to see a Dr.Seuss puppet show and then to the park for a picnic.

(ok, Mary D and I picked up fast food)

Kendra's Surprise...., NOT!

Some of you may remember that my "friends" toilet papered my house several weeks ago.  It was done in FUN and LOVE.  So Mary and I tried to sneak over to Kendra's to leave our napkins on our friend Kendra's yard.  We took this picture and we were going to e-mail her.  As we ducked and ran to our van, we had almost made it all the way out of the neighborhood when her daughter called saying they were going to call the police because two "strange" women were lurking around their house, LOL!

So we ended up just going over to visit and play for about an hour!  Obviously, I need to work on my toilet papering skills.  My husband couldn't believe that I was just going to use TWO napkins!

How was YOUR week?

• Apr. 8, 2008 - New Blog!

I have a New Blog!  (It does NOT replace this one)

As most of you know I have a Cyber Salt and Light Group.  We've been together for over two years now.  Women from all over the country share every week what the Lord is showing them as they read through their bible.  It is amazingly simple, but FULLER than any bible study I've ever been apart of.

Since I type up all of my weekly shares I thought I would store them in a place that if my computer ever crashed I wouldn't lose them, PLUS they are there for the world to see...., The Good, The Bad and The Ugly!

3-29-08 Salt and Light Leaders Training

The Praise and Worship was so moving!

Debbie, teaching and encouraging using the Word

Dawn Carter and Renee Ambrose (they just LOVE having their picture taken) *mischievous grin*

What a wonderful day of teaching and training we had on Saturday.  I was wonderfully exhausted by the end of the event.  I love that the main idea of leader training is reminding us that WE are NOT the Leaders, we just have to have a relationship with the leader!

• Mar. 30, 2008 - Forever "HIS"- Revelation!

NOTE:  My flash player is down and I am unable to size my photo's.  Be prepared that the photo's are very LARGE!

REVELATION- "Salt and Light For Teens"!

My 4th period class had a special visitor this past Friday.  Our Pastor Danny took time out of his very busy schedule to come and answer questions pertaining to Prophesy, the Second Coming and the Rapture!   (We are so very thankful)

This is the 4th Semester of, "Forever "His" classes at our co-op.  (Forever "His" is really Salt and Light for Teens

Each Semester we pick 1-4 books of the bible we read through relationally and then discuss.  This semester we chose the book of, "Revelation".  These 14-16 year olds grasp concepts many of us don't even ponder until much later in our adult lives.  The Lord pours out HIS spirit and gives us an intense thirst for the Word.......,   More of HIM, less of US!

(This semester we have also pulled in some of Pastor Danny's teaching Dvd's as Revelation is meaty and I wanted to make sure we had accurate information at all times)  Here are the questions asked by the students:

Questions

1-  Is Christ coming to earth or are we going to Heaven? (Second Coming)

2-  Where do you think Armagedon will take place, present day?

3-  During the 7 year Tribulation when do you think the Anti-Christ will reveal himself.

4-  Will the anti-Christ be born evil or is he a mortal man that does not know Jesus and when he is mortally wounded THEN he becomes filled with Satan?

5-  Will the Muslims think the Anti-Christ is Allah?

6-  Could the Anti-Christ be the Pope?

7-  Will we get to see past events when we get to heaven? (things from the Old Testament, like Moses parting the water)

8-  For those of us raptured will we get to watch what's happening on earth?

9-  In Revelation 9:2 when it talks about the Abyss, is this the same thing as Hell?

10-  When people die we know that scripture says, "Absent from the Body, present with the Lord".  What happens to those who die who aren't believers?  Do their spirits immediately go to hell?

11-  Can you explain the purpose of having our earthly bodies reunited with our spirits?  Are those in Heaven now without bodies?  How do they function?

12-  What is heaven like?  Will we have a purpose?  Will we work, have children or families?  Will I still know my mom and dad?

13-  Is there such a thing as ghosts or paranormal?  Is it evil?  Is it bad to be interested in it scientifically?

14-  In Revelation Chapter 6-  When it talks about the different color horses is that symbolic?  What does that mean?

15-  Where is Eden and the tree of life, NOW?

16-  After Armageden, will everyone who is in heaven now come to earth for the 1000 year reign or do the people in heaven stay in heaven and the people on earth stay on earth?

17-  What is the purpose of this life?  If God knows who is going to chose Him and whose not, why do we have to go through all of this?

18-  Will people who refuse to take the mark of the beast really be be-headed or will there be another type of death?  (beheading seems old fashioned with all the science we have today)

19-  What if someone takes the mark and changes their mind?  Can they get saved and still go to heaven?

20-  I've heard that there will not really be a rapture and that we will ALL have to live through the tribulation?  What are your thoughts about this?

I've closed with some pictures from this past Friday!

To my class...., I hope you guys have an AMAZING summer!  Keep on reading your bible and memorizing ONE verse per week!  I'll make a public challenge to you!  If you memorize TEN verses between now and August 1st (does not include any verses we've already memorized) I will have a special gift for you!  You must e-mail no later than Friday April 4th to tell me you'd like to participate!

PPEA Board Meeting!

I absolutely LOVE being a part of the PPEA family!  This is a picture from our monthly board meeting.  As you can see we are all business and no play....,

This particular board meeting was very special because my sweet friend Christa was there for the first time.  She has the green sweater on and you can tell by her expression she LOVES having her picture taken, LOL!

Seriously, ALL of the women are WONDERFUL and GRACIOUS and we are like family.  I wouldn't trade any of them for anything.  I'm better because they are a part of my life!

We missed our Brandy and Monica, but will see them next month!

• Mar. 19, 2008 - Stacia!

Stacia

I met and had breakfast with a wonderful friend.  Even as I sit her typing this, it overwhelms my heart with memories of this precious girl!

You see, when I was in my early 20's and attending another church, her mom and I were such close friends. (I still love her precious Mama) Stacia was only 11 years old and I took to her as though she were one of my own children.

She is a Beautiful "Betty" personality.  Full of FUN, laughter, idea's and a heart of gold!  I was overwhelmed to see the beautiful woman she has become.  God has done an amazing work in her heart.  She is striving to love her Lord, her husband, her daughter and her home with the fire and commitment Proverbs 31 talks about.  I know Rosita (her mom) must be so very proud!

It was wonderfully odd to look across the table, not at the young girl I took under my wing, but at a precious adult friend who has grown into a beautiful wife and mother.

We have decided to try to meet once a month and I will look forward to and cherish each divine appointment!

• Mar. 19, 2008 - Annual Year End Testing!

Year End Testing~ Time4Learning, how did it measure up?

We have used the same tester since 2000!  (Jackie Winner)

Her first words when she was done testing the boys.....,?  "I can't wait to meet with you and hear all about this time4learning"?!?!

I had to wait 45 mins for her to go over their test results and write them up.  (that was a long 45 mins)  When I sat down I quickly glanced at their test results and my mouth literally fell open.

All three of my older boys (the youngest starts school this coming year) went up more than they ever have in ten years of homeschooling.

This is the one subject we as a family have struggled finding our fit with.  I have tried the gamut...,

ACE
Horizons
Math U See
Spectrum
Saxon
(wonderful programs just not a fit for our home, our family)

I want to yell it from the mountain tops..., THANK YOU TIME4LEARNING!!!!  If you want to take a peek at their lesson plans click HERE

You can even try a DEMO LESSON

So this year we will use Time4Learning for all our core subjects and Heart Of Dakota for our History, Science, Bible, Art, Spelling and copywork!

Blessings,
MamaMary (AKA: Mary Arnold)

• Mar. 16, 2008 - Betty/Olive Talk!

Accepting Who I am as a homeschooler!

Do you ever get caught up in noticing your friend's strengths and your weaknesses? Do you find yourself being tossed like waves in a storm when choosing curriculum? Do you see how something works so PERFECTLY for your best friend and then you buy it and try it and it's a dud in your home?

Do you watch your friend with amazement as she plugs into activities, involves herself in co-ops, while maintaining a sense of JOY and yet you can't find time to run to the grocery store?

The purpose of this workshop is to better understand who YOU are, so that you can embrace your strengths, strengthen your weaknesses and find your curriculum GROOVE! Our prayer is that you will walk away encouraged and inspired being who God made you to be!

Stop striving to become what you admire and instead..., Embrace all the beauty God poured into YOU when He created you in HIS image!

We had so much FUN doing this workshop!  As Kim and I would share stories to illustrate our strengths and weaknesses we would see the audience participation through their laughter, their nodding heads and their feedback!

It honestly blows me away how the Lord took my personal journey of understanding who He made me to be and used it to heal my heart FIRST, and then how He took that very same message and used laughter and light heartedness to bring understanding to others through this workshop.

I just love the Lord.  I love how there is always a purpose to our pain, always a purpose to our weaknesses.  "His strength is made perfect in MY weakness!"
