Jan. 8, 2006 - My Son Had An Epiphany!

Thursday was our first day back at our
studies after christmas break. My kids seemed to have forgotten
everything they were working on! My fault partially, I guess, for
not giving them a quickie 5 min review each day like I was GOING to.
Dominic was most resistant, and when it came time to do math review. he
gave me major attitude! I was really frustrated and called it
quits for the day.
I took Dominic with me later that day to pick up some fresh goat's milk
for Charlie at a local farm, and I talked earnestly with him about how
I felt about how he treats me sometimes. I reminded him that I
chose to homeschool because I love him and want the best for him, and
that it's part of God's plan for our family. I explained how it's
a really hard job for me, because I have to add being a teacher on top
of being a mommy, wife, and running a household. We talked about
the things that frustrate him. He feels like we are always
jumping down his back about stuff, and I assured him that I will try
harder to listen and not judge, and asked him to please try to respect
me not only as a parent, but his teacher.
Then, I asked him to take a different look at homeschooling from my
point of view. I said that there are a lot of people who think
that I am crazy to do it, and a lot of those people want me to
fail. I explained how people get comfortable with others doing
the same things all the time, and that there are some people in your
life that are threatened by you when you move up and on and become a
success. We talked about a certain friend of mine who checks up
on me once in awhile to see if I've failed yet! I aske Dominic to
become my partner, to prove ourselves a success. Not that
external validation is important, but I would like my kids to feel
pride in being successfully homeschooled, and to feel proud of their
mother, too.
So..I'm working on weaning Charlie from the boob. He's 1 now,
eating a full and balanced solid foods diet, sleeping through the night
(yay! moving him in with his brothers was the magic ticket!
I actually get 6 or 7 hours of continuous sleep now!) and I have to
admit, there is a selfish reason too. I need to lose 40 pounds,
and I want to take aggressive measures that would not be compatible
with breastfeeding. I always like tostart off a weightloss
attempt with a good rowdy bowel cleanse! Ooooh.. you really
wanted to know that, huh? I also want to try some Nature's
Sunshine weightloss products. Toxins flowing out of your body
make nursing not fun for baby!
I am proud to say that excepting a few instances...my babies have
not been formula fed at all! I always go to fresh, raw,
unpasteurized goat's milk for my babies when weaning and for a time
thereafter. On a cellular level, goat's milk is the closest thing
there is, nutrient for nutrient and compound for compound, to human
breast milk. Sure, you can get it in the store (meyenberg's) but
as with cow milk, you never know what youre getting. Commercial
cows and goats are pumped full of antibiotics and recombinant animal
growth hormones, and then the milk is heat pasteurized, killing up to
95% of the nutrients and enzymes present!
We get our milk straight from the goat herself. It's thicker and
creamier that cow's milk, and has a slight sweet taste too.
Zach loves it...I may have to get more per week! charlie sucks it
down like it's being outlawed.
The child has his father's appetite! There is nothing Charlie
won't eat...he loves all fruits and veggies, and I recently started
juicing again...mostly with apples, oranges, carrots, beets, celery,
cabbage, and broccoli. Not ALL together, mind you, but various
combinations!.. I put a straw in, hold it up to Charlie's mouth, and he
can drain an 8 ounce glass in no time! He's quite the little
powerhouse and a very sturdy young man.
My eyes are becoming swimmy...got new glasses today with a stronger
prescription, and they take getting used to. I dream of the day
we can get LASIK surgery...with Chas's new job, it's just over the
horizon!
Goodnight all, and God bless!

I read your post...it was on HSBlogger's front page. Is your son in the middle school years? I have six children. I seem to get that sort of thing mostly with the 12-14 year old age range. (I do have a 17yo that seems to prefer anything over the book-work part of school.)
You make the goat's milk sound yummy. I've never tried it. Maybe we should give it a try. We live in the country and have for 8 years now. I've just continued going to the grocery store. I wonder if goat's milk is more expensive?
Yeah for weaning time! Sounds like the wee one is very happy and eats just fine. Congrats!
