A while ago, Rebeca
wrote "100 Things About Me". I think Rebeca's life is incredibly
interesting. Mine probably isn't quite as interesting, but I have
traveled quite a bit and lived in a lot of places, so here it goes:
1. I'm an only child, but my parents had a total of 14 foster children
over the course of several years. The most they had at one time
(besides myself) was five. 2. I have lived in six states: California, Oregon, Washington, Missouri, Minnesota, and Wisconsin. 3. Outside of the USA I've lived in Austria (2 years) and in Holland (about seven months). 4. I've also traveled to England, Belgium, Luxembourg, Italy, France, Germany, Denmark, Spain, Yugoslavia (when it was still under that name), Hungary, Jamaica, and Morocco (I think that's it!) and some of these places I stayed in for several months. 5. My dad thought he made up my name. He combined two of my mom's sisters names (Marlene and Nola) and came up with Marla.
6. I had two miscarriages before I got pregnant with my oldest child. I
honestly never thought I would have any children after trying for three
and a half years. 7. I got pregnant with my second child when my first one was 9 1/2 months old. 8. I got pregnant with my third child when my second one was 7 months old. 9. I've been pregnant 8 times, but have only 4 children. 10. I moved to Austria when I was 11 and lived there until I was 13 because my parents joined a missionary organization. 11.The first year I was in Austria (6th grade) I was taught by three different adults in a semi-homeschool setting.
12. The second year my mom planned on homeschooling me, but she was
sick a lot of the time and they couldn't afford to buy any curriculum.
I used some books that had been used by another missionary kid a couple
of years before. Some of them were written in the 40's and taught that
the USA
had 40-some-odd states as opposed to 50 states. The only class I
actually had was math. The rest of my school time I read - school
books, Tolkien, fiction, Christian non-fiction, basically anything that
was downstairs in the small library at the missionary base. 13.
When I got back to the States and was tested at a Christian school, I
had a B+ average (which is what I had when I left that same school in
5th grade - yeah for homeschooling!) 14.I've read each book in The Chronicles of Narnia approximately 20 times (The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe I've read about 25 times - mostly while in Austria). 15. The Chronicles of Narnia is the series that made me want to become a writer. 16. My husband was in the Navy for 8 years. 17. He's been all over the world, but he's never been to any of the countries I've been to. 18. I've never been to any of the countries that he has been to.
19. I could have rode a camel when I was in Morocco, but it kept
groaning every time anyone got on it and I was afraid of it groaning
when I got on it and having the guy that I liked (who was also on that
trip) think it was groaning because I was fat. P.S. At this point
in my life I was not overweight (okay, maybe by 5 lbs.!) How
silly we can be at the age of barely 19. 20. I have watched the sun rise over the Sahara desert. 21. I have slept in a Moroccan home. My friends and I were invited by a girl that we met in a Moroccan open market. 22. Most toilets in Morocco
are holes in the bathroom with a place to put each foot on either side
of the hole. (These "toilets" can also be found in other countries too).
23. I've been chased down a one way street (with a friend of mine) by
two Moroccan guys who were driving BACKWARDS down the street. We got
away from them by escaping into a walking street. A little scary. 24. I love to read, but rarely find the time anymore beyond books on homeschooling, parenting, etc. 25. My best friend is my husband. 26. I would like to have, at least, two more children. 27. When I was 19 (in Morocco) I asked the Lord how long it would be before I got married and I felt like He told me 7 years.
28. I met my husband when I was 19 (after coming back to the States),
when out on one or two "dates" with him, and decided that we weren't
right for each other. 29. Years later, we met up again, he asked me out, started dating and were married a few months later. Seven years after I asked God when I would get married (I had dated several people in between.) 30. I've only had three dogs in my life: Rusty (a mutt); Lady Chantel (a Collie); and Babe (another mutt). 31. I had a yellow parakeet named Pateeshka (it means "bird" in Russian). 32. I had a cat I hated named KitKat. 33. After reading Lord of the Rings when I was 12, I wanted to get a fluffy, grey, female kitten and name it Galadriel. 32. I would still like to name a grey cat Galadriel. 33. I'd like to name a black cat Mowgli (from Jungle Book). 34. I really don't like cats very much, but I do love names. 35. All three of my girls are named after Russian royalty. 36. Neither my husband, nor myself, are Russian. 37. My son has a Biblical name, which was picked by my husband before he ever met me. It means, "God has remembered." 38. If we have more children, the boys will have Biblical names and the girls will have Russian/Slavic names. 39. Nope, we're still not Russian. 40. I am part Jewish. 41. I had my second daughter at home with a lay midwife attending. 42. My husband's name is on the birth certificate as the person who delivered my daughter.
43. Most of the guys I dated were younger than me. One was six years
older. My husband is 10 1/2 months older than I am and a perfect fit. 44. I am creative, but not fast in creating. I spend too much time thinking about it than doing it. 45. I like to paint big stuff - like murals on walls (I painted my son's bedroom wall in Calif. with a lighthouse scene) and sets for plays. 46. When I am creating something, I get lost in the moment and I'm content and peaceful. 47. I went to Bible school in California and then transferred to a Bible college in Missouri. 48. My parents got divorced soon after I graduated from Bible college. 49. I had a double major: Bible and Communication Arts and a minor in English Lit.
50. My husband didn't go to college, but when we were both working,
could still make more money than me - and I'm definitely okay with that! 51. I will never choose to divorce my husband. 52. When I was in high school I wanted to have a career, but wasn't sure that I wanted a husband and kids. 53.Now I can't imagine my life without my husband and kids. 54. My mom is an amazing lady - I'm still discovering more about her. 55. I love having my kids at home with me and homeschooling them. 56. I stay up way too late now that I don't have to get up at 3 in the morning!
