Marybeth's Musings on
Motherhood and More

Yesterday I had a taste of the life of a working mom... and I did not like it! I had a board meeting for our local homeschool support group and we were there from 9am til I finally had to leave at 3:30, as my house was falling apart. I got two phone calls towards the end-- the sitter called to say that the 4yo had thrown up and then my husband called to say that he had arrived home to discover the baby had a strange rash on her face.
After that call, I headed home. No worries-- everything appears to be fine. But the kids were definitely glad to see me-- especially the baby. She and I spent the rest of the evening snuggling. She is cutting teeth and is not a happy girl these days!
Our board meeting was nice. I love the ladies on the board. Many of them were my role models when I was getting started, so it is a bit surreal to be sitting on a board with them now. I keep asking myself, "How did I get here?"
Our support group has seen a remarkable drop in membership. Has anyone else out there experienced this? We have decided that people have either found support in their churches, decided they just don't need support, or formed their own support from friendships, online or neighbors. I can remember "back in the day" when I NEEDED the support of the group as they were the only folks I knew who were homeschooling!
The main purpose of our meeting yesterday was to assign jobs for the year. But we also discussed the future of the group. Our group sponsors a decent-sized homeschool conference in our city each year, and we are looking at not being able to have it if the group drops off any more. That would be sad, as many people enjoy this conference, and attend it instead of our state conference because of its location and more manageable size. It is not nearly as overwhelming-- especially to beginners.
Soooo, anyone out there have any suggestions as to how to bolster a support group?? We are certainly open to them! One thing we are going to do is really put effort into providing better, more organized fellowship for the ladies like we used to have. I can remember circling that date on my calendar faithfully each month and really looking forward to it. I hope that we can get those up and running again for all who need fellowship and encouragement in the areas of homeschooling, being a mom, organization, and drawing closer to God. I know for sure we can all use that! I am very proud of my husband, as he has also spearheaded an effort to get the dads of our group together for a bi-weekly Bible study. I am hoping these combined efforts will make the group as a whole more cohesive.
