What I Want
To want what I have, to take what I'm given with grace. For this I pray... Don Henley
The other day my daughter asked me a question that I am not used to being asked. "Mommy," she said, "What do you want for Christmas?" I have been thinking about my answer ever since.
My answer is that I do not really want anything for Christmas. What I want for Christmas is Christmas itself. The celebration of Christmas-- the shopping, the baking, the get-togethers, the increased family time and sentimental moments-- is all I need. There is no gift under the tree that can match all of that. I love reflecting on Christmases past and reveling in the present. I love anticipating the looks on my kids' faces when they open that one special gift. I love opening Christmas cards from people I hear from once a year and exclaiming over how much their children have changed. I love my son's pride in his daddy's ability to string pretty lights outside our house. I love when our house is all lit up inside and out with twinkling lights and special decorations. I love the sights, the smells, the feelings that surround this holy time on the calendar. It is priceless-- it is the gift.
And so, my daughter-- child of my heart-- I have what I want this Christmas. It is you-- you and your brothers and sisters and your daddy. The people I dreamed of celebrating Christmas with "someday" when I was just a little girl myself. And now someday is here and I couldn't be more blessed to share Christmas with those I love.
