Meeting With The Big Guy
The other day we took the kids to see Santa. (Yes, we are shameless commercialists caught up in all the consumerism of Christmas.) As we were getting ready to go, my four year old kept asking me about his meeting with Santa. He wondered what he should ask him for, and what he would talk to him about. I could tell he was really in deep thought over this issue. He was really preparing for his time with the big guy.
As I thought about my son's attitude about his brief meeting with Santa, I realized that I could take some lessons from him. You see, my son had it right. This was important in his little world, and he treated it as such. And yet, I tend to have a pretty blase attitude about my time with the biggest of all big guys. How flip and cavalier I can be at times about my prayer life, and my time in the Word. I am going before the throne of the God of the Universe with little to no preparation, planning or pondering. My thoughts wander. My to do list screams at me to get moving. I don't hold the awe and anticipation for God that my son held for Santa, and that is sad.
I need to do better. I need to take my time with God more seriously. I need to treat Him like He is important, instead of merely fitting Him in. Santa isn't real, but God certainly is. I need to keep that in mind as I go through my days, and consider the privilege He has given me to approach Him at all. The best part is, God doesn't make me wait in line nor does He charge me $15.95 for a photo of Him and I together. He has drawn that photo into my heart for all eternity.
